The Greek word translated <i>when <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#ean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/interlinear\/matthew\/4-9.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possible translation<\/a> was <i>if<\/i>: <i>And I, <\/i>[if] <i>I am lifted up from the earth<\/i>&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I understand why the translators chose <i>when;<\/i> <i>if <\/i>might imply to some that Jesus questioned whether his crucifixion might happen: <i>My Father, if <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ei.html#ei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30<\/a>) <i>possible, let this cup <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/01\/aultery-in-the-prophets-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\">pass<\/a> from me!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> But to the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/26\/jesus-artifacts-part-1\/\">philosophical bent<\/a> of my mind, <i>if <\/i>sounds like the introduction to an <a href=\"https:\/\/open.lib.umn.edu\/goodreasoning\/chapter\/if-then-arguments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">if-then statement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If Jesus is crucified,<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then He will draw all people to Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesus was crucified.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, He will draw all people to Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is a valid form of deductive reasoning called modus ponens or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/display\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803095354544;jsessionid=D3E19EE415C19211AA78BF21E9736DAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affirming the antecedent<\/a>. It is logically equivalent to:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If Jesus is crucified,<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then He will draw all people to Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesus will not draw all people to Himself.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, He was not crucified.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is another valid form of deductive reasoning called modus tollens or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/display\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803095711647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denying the consequent<\/a>. Though the form is valid, everything depends on the truth of the original conditional statement. Interestingly, the example of a conditional statement given in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordreference.com\/display\/10.1093\/oi\/authority.20110803095354544;jsessionid=D3E19EE415C19211AA78BF21E9736DAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford Reference<\/a> online is false.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If the burglars entered by the front door, <\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then they forced the lock.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The burglars entered by the front door.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, they forced the lock.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Affirming the antecedent seems at least plausible. What about denying the consequent?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If the burglars entered by the front door, <\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then they forced the lock.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The lock was not forced.<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, the burglars did not enter by the front door.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps the burglars had a key. Perhaps they found the front door unlocked and were savvy enough to lock it as they exited, making the crime scene appear more like insurance fraud than burglary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those who believe Jesus assume that his conditional statements are true. That probably explains why I&#8217;m not finding a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#_rational\">rational arguments<\/a> describing: \u201c1) how Jesus was wrong and 2) when He changed his mind.\u201d I&#8217;m finding emotional arguments instead disputing that He said, <i>I<\/i>&#8230;<i>will draw all people to Myself<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those with no philosophical bent to their minds feel no compulsion in the argument that Jesus will <em>not<\/em> draw all to Himself is the logical equivalent of Jesus was <em>not<\/em> crucified. So, I&#8217;ll continue to take the long way, which I&#8217;m finding quite edifying anyway. Jesus prayed (John 17:12 NET [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When I was with <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn39\">them<\/a> I kept them safe <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn37\">and<\/a> watched over them in your name <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn38\">that<\/a> you have given me. Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_lawlessness\"><\/a>The phrase <i>except the one destined for destruction <\/i>(KJV: <em>but the son of perdition<\/em>) was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ei.html#ei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30 \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ui.html#uios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apw.html#apwleias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in Greek. As I worked on this essay it was brought to my attention that Paul used this same phrase (2 Thessalonians 2:3 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ui.html#uios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apw.html#apwleias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It has forced me to acknowledge my assumption that Jesus prayed about Judas Iscariot above. It seems like a good assumption when I focus on, <em>When I was with <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn39\">them<\/a> I kept them safe <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/04\/to-make-holy-part-7\/#_ftn37\">and<\/a> watched over them in your name<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> But if I consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+17:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preceding verse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+17:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 20<\/a> I must admit that Jesus may have been looking much further afield than I have previously imagined. I will proceed, however, as if my original assumption was correct. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is what happened when Peter questioned Jesus about the destiny of another (John 21:20-22 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Peter<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, \u201cLord, who is it that is going to betray you?\u201d When<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, \u201cLord, what about this man?\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cIf it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_Judas\"><\/a>I doubt that Jesus would ever question me about Judas Iscariot. But if He asked why I believed that Judas would be redeemed, my <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+14:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">account<\/a> would be: You said you would draw all to yourself. If He asked why I believed that Judas was eternally doomed, I could answer: You prayed, <i>Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> In other words, I would be arguing that <i>lost <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apw.html#apwleto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f7d\u03bb\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoll.html#apollumi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ui.html#uios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apw.html#apwleias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (NET: <i>the one destined for destruction<\/i>) were of eternal, rather than temporal, consequence, <i>so that the scripture could be fulfilled<\/i>. Wow!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, I don&#8217;t intend to argue that the sin condemned in Judas Iscariot&#8217;s flesh, standing on Jesus&#8217; left (if <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/19\/christianity-part-2\/#_understanding\">I have understood<\/a> this <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/11\/09\/christianity-part-1\/#_moment\">moment<\/a> correctly) will not be condemned <i>into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/05\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-11\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> It is difficult for me to argue, however, that there would be no corresponding new human born of God and the one we know as Judas Iscariot standing on Jesus&#8217; right <i>so that the scripture could be fulfilled<\/i>. I, and anyone who loves the truth of the scripture, would owe Judas Iscariot an eternal debt of gratitude. Only the English Elpenor translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ase.html#asebhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u1f75\u03c2<\/a> (<i>the ungodly one<\/i>) makes it entirely clear that that which was <i>destroyed <\/i>or <i>perished <\/i>is singular. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/16230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanakh<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chabad.org<\/a> also translated <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7563\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u0591\u05e2<\/a> (<i>&#8216;\u0101\u1e07a\u1e0f<\/i>), <\/span><i>a wicked man<\/i>. I won&#8217;t argue whether they remained alive or how long they remained alive in Hades. From the perspective of the witnesses, they were alive when <i>the earth closed upon them<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have an extremely limited perspective on life. Korah, Dathan, Abiram, their wives and children, for instance, had a dramatic tale to tell Father Abraham.
