<\/a>In another essay<\/a> I quoted Paul: For <\/i>[the day of the Lord<\/i><\/a>] will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction <\/i>(\u1f41<\/a> \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>).1<\/sup><\/a> It rattled my cage<\/a> more than I realized at first. I didn’t even recognize that cage until it rattled. But now I have to consider whether my assumption that Jesus called Judas Iscariot \u1f41 \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 (NET<\/a>: the one destined for destruction<\/i>) is like Jesus’ disciples’ discussion about having<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> no bread<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> after He said: \u201cWatch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!\u201d<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

To begin I’ll consider the day of the Lord <\/i>(\u1f21<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>). Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 1:4-9 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. For you were made rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge\u2014just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord (\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u1fb3<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It seems important to me to simply repeat Paul’s words and let them really sink in: you were called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord <\/i>by God <\/i>[who] is faithful<\/i>. [Y]ou will be blameless on the day of our Lord <\/i>because He will also strengthen you to the end<\/i>. [Y]ou do not lack any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ <\/i>because the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus<\/i>…made <\/i>[you] rich in every way in him, in all your speech and in every kind of knowledge\u2014just as the testimony about Christ has been confirmed among you<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again he wrote (2 Corinthians 1:13, 14 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

For we do not write you anything other than what you can read and also understand. But I hope that5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> you will understand completely just as also you have partly understood us, that we are your source of pride just as you also are ours in the day of the Lord (\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u1fb3<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>)<\/em> Jesus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>While taking nothing away from the fact that God is faithful, by whom you were called<\/i> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ our Lord<\/i>,6<\/sup><\/a> Paul, through his letters preserved in the New Testament, led me to Christ. I am a recipient of his ministry as much as anyone in Corinth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul is my \u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>: \u201ca boast, object of boasting, exultation; glory, honour; pride, object of pride; rejoicing.\u201d But I’ve assumed he wouldn’t care much for me. I am too slow, too hesitant to believe. <\/span><\/p>\n

Even if that were so, if we were suddenly thrust together as I am now, it will not be so on the day of the Lord, when we both can smile and nod to one another, both made blameless by the same God and Father through the same Lord Jesus Christ. For I am sure of this very thing, <\/i>Paul wrote, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> the day of Christ Jesus<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul wrote (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now on the topic of times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you know quite well that the9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> day of the Lord (\u1f21\u03bc\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a><\/span>)<\/em> will come in the same way as a thief in the night. Now10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> when they are saying, \u201cThere is peace and security,\u201d then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape (or, \u201cemerge [like a baby out of the womb];\u201d \u1f10\u03ba\u03c6\u1f7b\u03b3\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03c6\u03b5\u03cd\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would. For11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness. So then we must not sleep as12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the rest, but must stay alert and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But since we are of the day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation. For God did not destine (\u1f14\u03b8\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> us for wrath<\/a> but<\/a> for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep, we will come to life together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In this context it’s fairly obvious that you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would<\/i>13<\/sup><\/a> doesn’t mean that you <\/i>will know when the day of the Lord is any more than they <\/i>or them<\/i>. It is simply that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord<\/i>14<\/sup><\/a> because He will also strengthen you to the end<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

It seems important to pin down who exactly you <\/i>and they <\/i>are here. Paul wrote (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now on the topic of brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. And indeed you are practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters in all of Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, to aspire to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. In this way you will live a decent life before outsiders and not be in need.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. And indeed you are practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a> The outsiders <\/i>(\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f14\u03be\u03c9<\/a>), presumably, are <\/i>[not] taught by God to love one another <\/i>and are <\/i>[not] practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul also wrote (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 7, 8 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

For this is God\u2019s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality, that each of you know how to possess his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. Consequently the one who rejects this is not rejecting human authority but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They<\/i>, called the Gentiles who do not know God <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u1f14\u03b8\u03bd\u03b7<\/a> \u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u1f79\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u1f79\u03bd<\/a>) here, live in lustful passion<\/i>. You <\/i>will become holy<\/i>; you <\/i>will keep away from sexual immorality<\/i>; you <\/i>will know how to possess <\/i>[your] own body in holiness and honor <\/i>because you<\/i>, presumably, know God and this is God\u2019s will <\/i>for you<\/i>. Again, Paul wrote (1 Thessalonians 2:11-16a NET);<\/span><\/p>\n

As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his own children, exhorting and encouraging you17<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and insisting that you live18<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in a way worthy of God who calls you to his own kingdom and his glory. And19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> so we too constantly thank God that when you received God\u2019s message that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human message, but as it truly is, God\u2019s message, which is at work among you who believe. For you became imitators, brothers and sisters, of God\u2019s churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, because you too suffered the same things20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> from your own countrymen as they in fact did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets21<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and persecuted us severely. They are displeasing to God and are opposed to all people because they hinder us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[Y]ou live in a way worthy of God who calls you to his own kingdom and his glory<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a> They<\/i>, called Jews<\/a><\/i> (\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) here, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us severely<\/i>, are displeasing to God and are opposed to all people because they hinder us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a> But here it becomes quite clear that they <\/i>are neither Jews<\/em> nor Gentiles<\/em> per se: For you became imitators, brothers and sisters, of God\u2019s churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea <\/i>(e.g., in large part Jews), because you too suffered the same things from your own countrymen <\/i>(e.g., in large part Gentiles) as they in fact did from the Jews<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

So, what is the salient difference between you <\/i>and they<\/i>? [Y]ou received God\u2019s message that you heard from us<\/i>; you accepted it not as a human message, but as it truly is, God\u2019s message, which is at work among you who believe<\/i>.25<\/sup><\/a> And you became imitators of us and of the Lord when you received the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction<\/i>.26<\/sup><\/a> They<\/i>, presumably, had not received God\u2019s message <\/i>and had not become imitators <\/i>(\u03bc\u03b9\u03bc\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b9\u03bc\u03b7\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/a>) of us and of the Lord<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul continued (1 Thessalonians 1:9. 10 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n

For people everywhere report how you welcomed us27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> dead, Jesus our deliverer from29<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the coming wrath<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How is Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath<\/i>? The Greek word translated deliverer <\/i>was \u03c1\u03c5\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a participle of the verb \u1fe5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>: \u201cproperly, draw<\/a> (pull) to oneself,\u201d according to the HELPS Word-studies<\/a> on Bible Hub.<\/a> [Y]ou turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his Son from heaven<\/i>. They<\/i>, presumably, did not. So this is an indication of how they <\/i>become you<\/i>. An example of the inverse, you <\/i>becoming they<\/i>, follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I want to pause here to consider forsaken <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV, English Elpenor) and abandoned <\/i><\/i>(NET, NETS). The Hebrew word was <\/span>\u05e0\u05b8\u05d8\u05b7\u0597\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101\u1e6da\u0161<\/i>). The Greek word was \u1f00\u03bd\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a>. I’m having a difficult time recalling or articulating what I thought forsaken <\/i>or abandoned <\/i>meant.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I’m reasonably convinced it was not \u201cto let loose; to run wild; to let (someone\/something) run free without restraint,\u201d the first entry for \u1f00\u03bd\u1fc6\u03ba\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) in the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online. Staring at that definition, I have to admit it was my experience when<\/a> I became an atheist. And it is what Paul described as the wrath <\/i>(\u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u1f74<\/a>) of God<\/i>…revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness<\/i>.30<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Wrath of God Revealed from Heaven<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an image resembling mortal human beings or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.31<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/td>\nTherefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies among themselves<\/a>.32<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! So, the opposite of this wrath<\/i>, of being forsaken <\/i>or abandoned <\/i>is the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus. Though the English versions of the Septuagint were translated to match the Masoretic text, the actual Greek word \u1f00\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> (another form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03af\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) sounds more like the Lord’s promise not to allow his people \u201cto run wild\u201d in the future, not \u201cto let go,\u201d not \u201cto leave [them] uncared for\u201d or \u201cunattended.\u201d In other words, they will not be forsaken <\/i>or abandoned <\/i>forever, nor will God’s wrath <\/i>remain upon them forever. They will not be they<\/i> forever, but will be restored to you<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
