So Judah and his brothers came back to Joseph\u2019s house<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Suddenly Judah, though not the eldest, has taken the lead in the narrative.\u00a0 He and his brothers threw themselves to the ground before<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> Joseph.\u00a0 We are now my lord\u2019s slaves, we and the one in whose possession the cup was found<\/i>,3<\/sup><\/a> Judah said.\u00a0 But Joseph refused: The man in whose hand the cup was found will become my slave, but the rest of you may go back to your father in peace<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Judah<\/a>, the man credited with the plan to profit from Joseph\u2019s sale as a slave,5<\/sup><\/a> approached Joseph and related the tale of Jacob\u2019s love for Rachel\u2019s sons (Genesis 44:27-34 NET):<\/p>\n

\u201cThen your servant my father said to us, \u2018You know that my wife gave me two sons. \u00a0The first disappeared and I said, \u201cHe has surely been torn to pieces.\u201d \u00a0I have not seen him since. \u00a0If you take this one from me too and an accident happens to him, then you will bring down my gray hair in tragedy to the grave.\u2019 \u00a0So now, when I return to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us \u2013 his very life is bound up in his son\u2019s life. \u00a0When he sees the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father in sorrow to the grave. \u00a0Indeed, your servant pledged security for the boy with my father, saying, \u2018If I do not bring him back to you, then I will bear the blame before my father all my life.\u2019 \u00a0So now, please let your servant remain as my lord\u2019s slave instead of the boy. \u00a0As for the boy, let him go back with his brothers. \u00a0For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? \u00a0I couldn\u2019t bear to see my father\u2019s pain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Joseph was no longer able to control himself before all his attendants, so he cried out, \u201cMake everyone go out from my presence!\u201d<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he said to his brothers, I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What follows is one of the most beautiful expressions of forgiveness<\/a> in the Bible: Now, do not be upset and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to preserve life!<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I admit, I want to reach back in time and say to Joseph, \u201cNext time?\u00a0 Lead with that.\u201d\u00a0 But I can believe that it took some time to come to that conclusion.\u00a0 Maybe he even needed to hear Judah\u2019s changed heart before he could fully understand that all things work together for good<\/a> for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose<\/i>\u20269<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

God sent me ahead of you to preserve you on the earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance<\/i>, Joseph continued. \u00a0So now, it is not you who sent me here, but God<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As far as Joseph was concerned, Though<\/i> [his brothers\u2019 sin was] like scarlet<\/i>, [the Lord had made it]\u00a0as white as snow<\/a><\/i>; Though<\/i> [it was] red like crimson<\/i>, [He had made it] as wool<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Joseph sent his brothers home with provisions to bring their father and all their families back to Egypt.\u00a0 When he heard the news, Jacob was stunned, for he did not believe them. \u00a0But when they related to him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to transport him, their father Jacob\u2019s spirit revived. \u00a0Then Israel said, \u201cEnough! \u00a0My son Joseph is still alive! \u00a0I will go and see him before I die.\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Once again<\/a> the pattern holds: Jacob was unbelieving but Israel was persuaded and ready to go.<\/p>\n

On the journey God spoke to Jacob\u2019s unbelief<\/a>, Jacob, Jacob…I am God, the God of your father.\u00a0 Do not be afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0<\/a>) to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. \u00a0I will go down with you to Egypt and I myself will certainly bring you back from there.\u00a0 Joseph will close your eyes<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> chose \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) here.\u00a0 Now Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing around him to hear<\/i>14<\/sup><\/a> the word of God<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

There were two boats onshore owned by Peter and his business partners James and John.\u00a0 Jesus got into Peter\u2019s boat and asked him to put out a little way from the shore.<\/i>\u00a0 Then<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a> Jesus sat down and taught the crowds from the boat<\/i>.17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 After He finished teaching He told Peter to put out into deeper water for a catch of fish.\u00a0 Peter was tired.\u00a0 He had been up all night and hadn\u2019t caught a thing.\u00a0 But he did as Jesus said.\u00a0 He caught so many fish the net was tearing and he needed help from the other boat.\u00a0 Peter fell down at Jesus\u2019<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a> knees, saying, \u201cGo away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!\u201d<\/i>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is an odd way to react to a benefactor, but I think it illustrates the fearfulness<\/a> of those born only of the flesh of Adam.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not be afraid<\/i> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>),\u201d<\/i> Jesus said to him, \u201cfrom now on you will be catching people.\u201d \u00a0So when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he died there with Joseph as God had promised him.\u00a0 When Joseph\u2019s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, \u201cWhat if Joseph bears a grudge and wants to repay us in full for all the harm we did to him?\u201d<\/i>22<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And so, prompted by this fear, they lied and concocted the following scheme: they sent word to Joseph, saying, \u201cYour father gave these instructions before he died: \u2018Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.\u2019 \u00a0Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father.\u201d \u00a0When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept. \u00a0Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, \u201cHere we are; we are your slaves.\u201d<\/i>23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But Joseph\u2019s forgiveness, offered so many years earlier, was sincere.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>),\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cAm I in the place of God? \u00a0As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0So now, don\u2019t be afraid <\/i>(y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>).\u00a0 I will provide for you and your little children.\u201d\u00a0 Then he consoled them and spoke kindly to them<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the Septuagint<\/a> fear<\/i> was \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> (another form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) again.<\/p>\n

Do not be afraid<\/a> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>)<\/em> of those who kill<\/a> the body but cannot kill the soul.\u00a0 Instead, fear<\/a> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>)<\/em> the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Aren\u2019t two sparrows sold for a penny?\u00a0 Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father\u2019s will. \u00a0Even all the hairs on your head are numbered. \u00a0So do not be afraid<\/a> (\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>)<\/em>; you are more valuable than many sparrows [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[Addendum October 21, 2025<\/b>: The verb \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> might be understood as a command in the imperative mood<\/a> as it is above, or it might be understood as a fact, a promise, in the indicative mood<\/a>: You don’t fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, <\/em>you fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Aren\u2019t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father\u2019s will. Even all the hairs on your head are numbered. So <\/em>you are not afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows.<\/em> Recently, I have begun to hear these \u201cdual possibilities<\/a>\u201d as intentional, an opportunity to hear a \u201cmultiplexed<\/a>\u201d verb \u201cas a command to the lawless and disobedient<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(the old human), or in the\u00a0indicative mood<\/a>\u00a0as a fact of, and a promise to,\u00a0the just<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(the new human)\u201d Exploration, Part 15<\/em><\/a>.]<\/p>\n

And Jesus said to Nicodemus, I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God<\/a> <\/i>[Table<\/a>]\u2026What is born of the flesh<\/a> is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. \u00a0Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u201cYou must all be born from above.\u201d<\/i>25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
