There are 21 occurrences<\/a> of \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in Acts [see Table<\/a> below] the Greek word translated all people <\/i>in: And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) to myself.<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> As I began this study another passage was brought to my attention (Colossians 1:24-29 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I rejoice in my2<\/sup><\/a><\/em> sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ\u2019s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now<\/a> revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches<\/a> of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> and teaching everyone (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> with all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>)<\/em> wisdom, that we may present everyone (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd)<\/em> mature in Christ<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This wouldn’t have been part of my search criteria limited to \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, but it has become the key to the passages I’ll consider in detail in Acts. In the phrase \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a> (ESV: with all wisdom<\/i>) all <\/i>is limited, or qualified, by wisdom<\/i>. Will I dispute whether we <\/i>actually use all <\/i>wisdom? No, I understand that we <\/i>use all the \u201cwisdom, cleverness\u201d and \u201cskill\u201d God provides.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three times the Greek words translated everyone <\/i>were \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, which is remarkable only because \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> was translated all people <\/i>in John 12:32 without any limitation in the Greek. Here \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 was clearly limited, or qualified, by \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd. And here I began to argue in my mind that we <\/i>aren’t warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom<\/i>, but only those with whom we <\/i>come into contact.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I recalled my own words from another essay<\/a>: \u201cPaul, through his letters preserved in the New Testament, led me to Christ. I am a recipient of his ministry as much as anyone in Corinth.\u201d But did he intend to say that we may present <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>) everyone mature in Christ<\/i>? <\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek word \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd is a verb in the subjunctive mood<\/a> in a result clause. We present everyone mature in Christ <\/i>is the result of: [Christ] we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom<\/i>. For this I toil<\/i>, Paul wrote, struggling with all<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> his energy that he powerfully works within me<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a> Somewhere along the line we <\/i>have lost faith.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was socialized into a religion in which human will is regarded above all:5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

So, brethren, a universal attraction is raying out from Christ\u2019s Cross, and from Himself to each of us. But that universal attraction can be resisted. If a man plants his feet firmly and wide apart, and holds on with both hands to some staple or holdfast, then the drawing cannot draw. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul wasn’t socialized into that religion. He had resisted the goads<\/a> but the Lord prevailed despite his resistance. <\/span><\/p>\n

He spoke in his own defense (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) in Jerusalem (Acts 21:40b-22:3 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul, standing on the steps [of the <\/em>barracks<\/a>]<\/em>, motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great hush, he addressed6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> them in the Hebrew language, saying: \u201cBrothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> make before you.\u201d<\/span><\/span>
\nAnd when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. And he said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am8<\/sup><\/a><\/em> a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel<\/a> according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of you are this day. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When <\/i>[Paul] had come to Jerusalem, the brothers<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a>…said<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a> to him <\/i>(Acts 21:20b-22 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of those who have believed. They are all zealous for the law, and they have been told about you that you teach all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses,12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> telling them not to circumcise<\/a> their children or walk according to our customs. What then is to be done?13<\/sup><\/a><\/em> They will certainly hear that you have come.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They came up with a scheme to placate the many thousands<\/i>…among the Jews of those who have believed<\/i>, but before Paul could complete it (Acts 21:27b-31 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, stirred up the whole (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> crowd and laid hands on him, crying out, \u201cMen of Israel, help! This is the man who is teaching everyone (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> everywhere14<\/sup><\/a><\/em> against the people and the law and this place. Moreover, he even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.\u201d For they had previously seen15<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple. Then all the city was stirred up, and the people ran together. They seized<\/a> Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut. And16<\/sup><\/a><\/em> as they were seeking to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion.17<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul’s defense continued (Acts 22:4-10 ESV)<\/span><\/p>\n

I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, as the high priest and the whole (\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And I fell18<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, \u2018Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?\u2019 And I answered, \u2018Who are you, Lord?\u2019 And he said to me, \u2018I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.\u2019 Now those who were with me saw the light19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. And I said, \u2018What shall I do, Lord?\u2019 And the Lord said to me, \u2018Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> that is appointed for you to do.\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated appointed <\/i>here was \u03c4\u1f73\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>. This word was used by a Roman Centurion (Luke 7:8, 9 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

For I too am a man set (\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c3\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9)<\/em> under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, \u2018Go,\u2019 and he goes; and to another, \u2018Come,\u2019 and he comes; and to my servant, \u2018Do this,\u2019 and he does it.\u201d When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, \u201cI tell you, not even20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in Israel have I found such faith.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The centurion’s simple recognition that Jesus was a man set under the authority of a higher power was regarded as faith: \u201cI tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith,\u201d Jesus said. When Saul (aka Paul) was confronted by the resurrected, ascended and glorified Jesus, he didn’t trot out his best theological arguments why Jesus wasn’t Israel’s promised Messiah. What shall I do, Lord?<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a> He said instead. In other words, he believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Luke recounted the following when Paul and Barnabas preached in Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13:44-48 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord<\/a>. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling<\/a> him [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And<\/a> Paul and Barnabas spoke out<\/a> boldly, saying, \u201cIt was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since<\/a> you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life<\/a>, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I have made (\u03c4\u1f73\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> you a light for the Gentiles,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

that you may bring salvation to the ends (\u1f10\u03c3\u03c7\u1f71\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c3\u03c7\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of the earth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed (\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9)<\/em> to eternal life<\/a> believed.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Whatever resistance these Gentiles may have had to that \u201cuniversal attraction…raying out from Christ\u2019s Cross, and from Himself\u201d wasn’t overcome by something intrinsic to themselves. Rather, they believed <\/i>because they were appointed <\/i>(\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9) to eternal life<\/i>. The Jews, those who judged themselves unworthy of eternal life<\/i>, did not believe because a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until<\/a> the fullness of the Gentiles has come in<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Once that fullness <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) is achieved, I assume they, too, will be appointed to eternal life <\/i>and believe. And this, despite the fact that from my limited perspective<\/a>, they died almost 2,000 years ago. This outlook is informed less by knowledge<\/a>, the breadth and length and height and depth<\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a> and more by the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of God<\/i>,26<\/sup><\/a> as Paul prayed. And his prayer continues because I pray<\/a> it daily for all<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul’s defense continued (Acts 22:11-15 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd one Ananias, a devout27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> man according to the law, well spoken of by all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> the Jews who lived there, came to me, and standing by me said to me, \u2018Brother Saul, receive your sight.\u2019 And at that very hour I received my sight and saw him. And he said, \u2018The God of our fathers appointed (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b5\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth; for you will be a witness for him to everyone (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of what you have seen and heard. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So Paul, appointed<\/i>…to know <\/i>[God’s] will (\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>),28<\/sup><\/a> wrote: [Christ<\/a><\/i>] we proclaim, warning everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) and teaching everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd) with all wisdom, that we may present everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd) mature in Christ<\/a><\/i>,29<\/sup><\/a> following Ananias’ prophetic word, you will be a witness for him to everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>) of what you have seen and heard.<\/i>30<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

After Paul appealed (Acts 25:8-12<\/a>) to Caesar, the new governor Festus asked King Agrippa for advice about the charge (Acts 25:13-27<\/a>) to send with Paul. Near the end of his defense before Festus and Agrippa Paul said (Acts 26:19-29 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u1f74\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to the heavenly vision, but declared31<\/sup><\/a><\/em> first to those in Damascus, then32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in Jerusalem and throughout33<\/sup><\/a><\/em> all (\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. For this reason the34<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jews seized me in35<\/sup><\/a><\/em> the temple and tried to kill me. To this day I have had the help that comes from36<\/sup><\/a><\/em> God, and so I stand here testifying37<\/sup><\/a><\/em> both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses38<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said would come to pass: that the Christ must suffer and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both39<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to our people and to the Gentiles.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And as he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said40<\/sup><\/a><\/em> with a loud voice, \u201cPaul, you are out of your mind; your great learning is driving you out of your mind.\u201d But Paul41<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said, \u201cI am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but42<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I am speaking true and rational words. For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has43<\/sup><\/a><\/em> not been done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.\u201d And Agrippa said44<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to Paul, \u201cIn a short time would you persuade me to be45<\/sup><\/a><\/em> a Christian?\u201d And Paul said,46<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cWhether short or long,47<\/sup><\/a><\/em> I would to God that not only you but also all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> who hear me this day might become such as I48<\/sup><\/a><\/em> am\u2014except for these chains.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> was clearly limited in Paul’s mind to those who heard him that day making that defense at that trial. And \u03b5\u1f50\u03be\u03b1\u1f77\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> \u1f02\u03bd<\/a> translated I would <\/i>(NET: I pray<\/i>) here was a 1st<\/sup> person form of the verb \u03b5\u1f54\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>\u00a0in the optative mood:<\/span><\/p>\n

The optative is the mood of possibility, removed even further than the subjunctive mood from something conceived of as actual. Often it is used to convey a wish or hope for a certain action to occur.49<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yet, I too am hearing and believing his defense. Paul prayed or hoped or wished or willed to God <\/i>(\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u1ff7<\/a>), who is able to do far more abundantly<\/a> than all that we ask or think<\/i>.50<\/sup><\/a> And as I recall all that I can see that God has done to fulfill Ananias’ prophecy concerning Paul, you will be a witness for him to everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>) of what you have seen and heard<\/i>,51<\/sup><\/a> it becomes easier to believe what I can’t necessarily see: Him we proclaim, warning everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) and teaching everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd) with all wisdom, that we <\/i>[will52<\/sup><\/a>] present everyone <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd) mature in Christ<\/a><\/i>.53<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Why? How? And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, <\/i>Jesus said, will draw all people to myself.<\/i>54<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n
