This is a continuation of my intent to become much more familiar with the Greek translation of \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) and \u05d9\u05b1\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b4\u05d4\u0599<\/a><\/span> (y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) in the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I’ll pause just long enough to highlight that the command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge <\/i>(da\u02bfa\u1e6f<\/i>, <\/span>\u05d4\u05d3\u05e2\u05ea<\/a><\/span>) of good and evil<\/i> (NETS: the tree for<\/i>\u00a0knowing <\/i>[\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>] good and evil<\/i>) was given to Adam when he was alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

If I relied solely on the Masoretic text I would conclude that the singular \u05d0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (I will make<\/i>) as opposed to the plural \u05e0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Let us make<\/a><\/i>) indicated that \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 <\/span>(Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd <\/span>(‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) was a singular person of the \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (‘\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>). The rabbis who translated the Septuagint don’t corroborate that conclusion, however. They translated both \u05d0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4 <\/span>and \u05e0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4 <\/span>\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a plural form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>. Or, perhaps \u05d0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4<\/span>, the singular form, wasn’t in the Hebrew text the rabbis translated into Greek. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

As a comparison, in Genesis 18:1-3<\/a> the Masoretic text had: The Lord <\/i>(yeh\u00f4v\u00e2h<\/i>, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a><\/span>) appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a> But the Septuagint read: AND God <\/i>(\u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>) appeared to him by the oak of Mambre<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a> That appearance was described: Abraham looked up and saw three men <\/i>(Masoretic text: \u05d0\u05e0\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span>; Septuagint: \u1f04\u03bd\u03b4\u03c1\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>) standing across from him<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a> Abraham addressed this trio as My Lord<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> (Masoretic text: \u05d0\u05d3\u05e0\u05d9<\/a><\/span>) or Lord<\/i>5<\/sup><\/a> (Septuagint: \u03ba\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The verb \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u0597\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8<\/a><\/span> switched to the singular (Tanakh: And He said<\/i>) in Genesis 18:10 in the Masoretic text as it was in both verses in the Septuagint: \u03b5\u1f36\u03c0\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a> (NETS, English Elpenor: he said<\/i>). The NET translators chose One of them said <\/i>(note 29<\/a>) to account for this change. So in the Masoretic text only one of the trio of men that appeared to Abraham as \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Masoretic text) or \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> (Septuagint) prophesied the birth of Sarah’s son.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

But in the Septuagint the trio of men that appeared to Abraham as \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> was called the Lord (\u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) and spoke with one voice. I notice also in the Masoretic text that the Lord called Himself \u05de\u05b5\u05bd\u05d9\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) to Abraham<\/a>, but the translators of the Septuagint did not corroborate that with \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>. Here the actions of the three men (possibly four including Abraham) were described with plural verbs. When \u05d5\u05b7\u05bd\u05d9\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4 <\/span>(Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) spoke He emphasized his singular nature with \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9<\/a><\/span> in the Masoretic text and \u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a> in the Septuagint. Still, the emphasis seems to highlight the oneness of the three men called \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> that appeared to Abraham as \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint, while the Masoretic text seems to indicate that only one of the three men was \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0594\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Masoretic text), \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (Septuagint), told Abraham that He (singular) will go down now, and see<\/i>. Readers of the Septuagint can understand that \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, who appeared to Abraham as three men, speaks truthfully with a singular voice. Readers of the Masoretic text must be a little more flexible and forgiving regarding truth. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

So once the men (plural) left for Sodom, Abraham stood yet before <\/i>\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Masoretic text), \u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (Septuagint). If plural men are subtracted from three men, then two left and one remained. The translators of the NET did the arithmetic for us: The two men turned and headed toward Sodom<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Reading the Masoretic text one would assume that two men left leaving the one \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span>. Reading the Septuagint one can assume that two of the three men who appeared to Abraham as \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, called \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, went to Sodom to fulfill the Lord’s word: \u201cSo when I go down I shall see whether they are perpetrating according to the outcry concerning them that is coming to me, but if not\u2014that I may know.\u201d<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> The one who remained could also be called \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Masoretic text), \u039a\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (Septuagint).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Masoretic text the promise, \u201cSo when I go down I shall see whether they are perpetrating according to the outcry concerning them that is coming to me, but if not–that I may know,\u201d <\/i>was a euphemistic expression fulfilled by minions, and \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span> relied still on hearsay for his judgment. The Septuagint, about a thousand years older than the Masoretic text, persuades me that I was probably mistaken when I assumed that \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span> was one7<\/sup><\/a> of the \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am more inclined now to assume that the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a> is \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a>. I am more willing to answer the question, is \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a> the Father, the Son or the Holy Spirit, yes. But this aside into Genesis 18, fruitful as it proved to be, was intended to provide context for two examples of \u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05e2\u05b1\u05e9\u05c2\u05b6\u0594\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (\u02bf\u0101\u015b\u00e2<\/em>) translated with singular verbs in Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Greek word \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> (I will<\/i>…destroy<\/i>) is clearly singular. The rabbis who translated the Septuagint demonstrated that they would translate \u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05e2\u05b1\u05e9\u05c2\u05b6\u0594\u05d4<\/a><\/span> with a singular verb if \u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05e2\u05b1\u05e9\u05c2\u05b6\u0594\u05d4<\/a><\/span> was the word they found in the Hebrew text rather than the plural \u05e0\u05e2\u05e9\u05c1\u05d4<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
