So I ask<\/i>, Paul continued, God has not rejected his people, has he?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. \u00a0God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ad\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>)!1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The word \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ad\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> leads me directly back to Romans 8:28-30<\/a> (NET):<\/p>\n

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ad\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. \u00a0And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Do you not know<\/i> (\u03bf\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>; literally see<\/i>) what the scripture says about Elijah<\/i>, Paul continued, how he pleads <\/i>(\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) with God against Israel?<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0\u201cLord,<\/i> they have killed your prophets<\/i><\/b>, they<\/b><\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> have demolished your altars; I alone am left and they are seeking my life!<\/b><\/i>\u201d4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To plead against<\/i> is certainly a valid translation.\u00a0 But to fully appreciate Paul\u2019s sarcasm I think I must revisit the other two times he used \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> in Romans, as well as the story when the Lord determined that Elisha would replace Elijah as prophet.<\/p>\n

The Spirit helps us in our weakness<\/a><\/i>, Paul wrote, for we do not know how we should pray<\/a>, but<\/a> the Spirit himself intercedes for us<\/a> with inexpressible groanings <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0And he who searches<\/a> our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) on behalf of the saints according to God\u2019s will<\/i> [Table<\/a>].5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And<\/a>, Who will bring any charge against God\u2019s elect?\u00a0 It is God who justifies. \u00a0Who is the one who will condemn?\u00a0 Christ is the one who died (and more than that<\/a>, he was raised), who is at the right hand of God, and who also is interceding<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) for us<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I begin to see the contrast that Elijah sounded more like an accuser than an intercessor, Lord,<\/i> they have killed your prophets<\/i><\/b>, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left and they are seeking my life!<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

The Lord strengthened and helped Elijah flee from Jezebel for forty days.\u00a0 But after he had spent the night in a cave at Horeb, the Lord spoke to him, \u201cWhy are you here, Elijah?\u201d<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I have been absolutely loyal to the Lord, the sovereign God<\/i>, Elijah answered, even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. \u00a0I alone am left and now they want to take my life<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

After a demonstration where Elijah saw that the Lord was not in a mighty wind, an earthquake, or a fire, but a soft whisper<\/i>,9<\/sup><\/a> He gave him another chance to answer the same question, Why are you here, Elijah?<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Elijah gave exactly the same answer.\u00a0 So Elijah\u2019s prophetic ministry was close to its end, at least for the time being.\u00a0 Go back the way you came and then head for the Desert of Damascus<\/i>, the Lord told him. Go and anoint Hazael king over Syria. \u00a0You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to take your place as prophet<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t seem to be angry with Elijah.\u00a0 The Lord simply recognized that Elijah had reached the end of that measure of faith<\/i> He had distributed<\/i> to him: For by the grace given to me<\/i>, Paul wrote the Romans, I say to every one of you not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think, but to think with sober discernment, as God has distributed to each of you a measure of faith<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Elijah thought he had performed the ultimate empirical test before all Israel, proving once and for all, The Lord is the true God!<\/i>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He didn\u2019t understand that, faith\u00a0comes by hearing, and hearing<\/a> by the word of God<\/a><\/i>,14<\/sup><\/a> the soft whisper<\/i> rather than the cacophony of wind, earthquake or fire.\u00a0 But the Lord said to him, I still have left in Israel seven thousand followers who have not bowed their knees to Baal or kissed the images of him<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But what was the divine response to<\/i> [Elijah]?<\/i> Paul continued in Romans, \u201cI have kept<\/i><\/b> for myself seven thousand people who have not bent the knee to Baal<\/i><\/b>.\u201d \u00a0So in the same way at the present time there is a remnant chosen<\/i> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ae<\/a>) by grace. \u00a0And if it is by grace, it is no longer by works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Earlier<\/a> Paul wrote, when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our ancestor Isaac \u2013 even before they were born or had done anything good or bad<\/a> (so that God\u2019s purpose in election<\/i> [\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03ae<\/a>] would stand, not by works but by his calling<\/i> [\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>]) \u2013 it was said<\/a> to her,<\/i> \u201cThe older will serve the younger<\/i><\/b> [Table<\/a>],\u201d just as it is written:<\/i> \u201cJacob I loved<\/i><\/b>, but Esau I hated<\/b><\/i>.\u201d17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The word translated calling<\/i> above, \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in Greek, is a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, as is \u1f10\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> translated called<\/i> in, And those he predestined, he also called<\/i> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>); and those he called<\/i> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified<\/i>.18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul described God<\/a> as the One who makes the dead alive and summons<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) the things that do not yet exist as though they already do<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

What then?<\/i> Paul continued.\u00a0 Israel failed to obtain what<\/i>20<\/sup><\/a> it was diligently seeking, but the elect<\/i> (\u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f74<\/a>; i.e., \u1f10\u03ba\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, those chosen by grace<\/i>) obtained it. \u00a0The rest were hardened, as it is written,<\/i> \u201cGod gave them a spirit of stupor<\/i><\/b>, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear<\/b>, to this very day\u201d<\/b><\/i> [Table<\/a> comparing quote to Septuagint] \u00a0And David<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a> says,<\/i> \u201cLet their table become a snare and trap<\/i><\/b>, a stumbling block and a retribution for them<\/b>; <\/i>let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and make their backs bend continually.\u201d<\/i><\/b>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But why?\u00a0 Why would God do this to his chosen people?\u00a0 For this is what the Lord has commanded us<\/i>, Paul and Barnabas said in Pisidian Antioch, \u201cI have appointed you to be a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.<\/i>\u201d23<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And to the Romans Paul wrote, I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they?\u00a0 Absolutely not!\u00a0 But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Even in Acts Luke made it plain, When the Gentiles<\/i> [in Pisidian Antioch] heard this, they began to rejoice<\/a> and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed<\/i> (\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>) for eternal life believed<\/i>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This knowledge that God calls people to salvation \u201cin a certain order<\/a>\u201d should fill one with hope.\u00a0 Now if<\/i> [Israel\u2019s] transgression means riches for the world<\/i>, Paul continued, and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) bring?<\/i>26<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment<\/i>, Jesus said, because the patch<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, or filling<\/i>) will pull away from the garment and the tear will be worse. \u00a0And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise<\/i>27<\/sup><\/a> the skins burst and the wine is spilled out and the skins are destroyed.<\/i>28<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Instead they put new wine into new wineskins and both<\/i>29<\/sup><\/a> are preserved<\/i>.30<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0This was Jesus\u2019 answer to a question asked by John the Baptist\u2019s disciples, why Jesus\u2019 disciples did not adhere to their religious norms, and those of the Pharisees.<\/p>\n
