I began this study with a complaint<\/a> that \u201cin the past I\u2019ve gotten bogged down. My religious mind favors the arguments of Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar over those of Job.\u201d But as I considered Jobs\u2019 lament<\/a> and Moses\u2019<\/a> and Jeremiah\u2019s<\/a>, it occurred to me that despite my complaint I have become more patient with people in distress, less judgmental over the words they spoke as they vented their pain and frustration. But still \u201cI hope…to know God better and to discern the errors of my religious mind.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

This time I hear Job asking THE question: God made human infants so weak and helpless that their destruction is assured apart from the love and grace of God. And that includes imparting his love and grace to young women and young men: Even the evil<\/i>…know how to give good gifts to <\/i>[their] children<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> at the risk of those same young women and young men mistaking God\u2019s imputed righteousness for their own righteousness. <\/span><\/p>\n

God\u2019s love and grace answer job’s question and convey the hope and strength to hold out, saying, Behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a> Job may not have been ready yet to hear it from a human comforter, but any would-be human comforter could pray that God Himself would be the Comforter to lead Job out from his despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Septuagint makes it explicit that Job\u2019s friends were rulers<\/a>. Reading only the Masoretic text I missed how Job\u2019s comments about kings and princes may have put his friends on edge, especially equating them to stillborn infants. Does anyone appreciate being reminded of the sinful futility of one\u2019s life and its eventual end?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s much clearer to me this time how Job\u2019s description of death as a neutralizer of worldly rank and distinction might have affected his royal friends. I\u2019ll pause for a moment here to consider whether the impious have kindled a terrible wrath<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> in death, or the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> there.<\/span><\/p>\n

The verb \u1f10\u03be\u1f73\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u1f10\u03ba\u03ba\u03b1\u03af\u03c9<\/a>) can mean either have kindled <\/i>or have burnt out<\/i>. On the other hand a terrible <\/i>seems like a terrible translation of \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>). I suspect that \u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f78\u03bd \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u1f40\u03c1\u03b3\u03ae<\/a>) was the rabbis\u2019 attempt to capture some of the richness of <\/span>\u05e8\u05b9\u0591\u05d2\u05b6\u05d6<\/a><\/span> (r\u014d\u1e21ez<\/i>). The English word string for \u05e8\u05b9\u0591\u05d2\u05b6\u05d6 (r\u014d\u1e21ez<\/i>) in the \u201cOutline of Biblical Usage<\/a>\u201d online reads like an apt description of the wicked<\/i>, impious <\/i>or ungodly<\/i>: \u201cagitation, excitement, raging, trouble, turmoil, trembling;\u201d \u201cturmoil, disquiet, raging;\u201d \u201ctrembling, trepidation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Jesus\u2019 description of death a rich man in Hades, as he was in torment <\/i>(\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b2\u03ac\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>),5<\/sup><\/a> called out <\/i>(\u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)6<\/sup><\/a> to Abraham: I am in anguish in this fire<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a> For years I would have characterized this as a description of the place<\/a> where the impious have kindled a terrible wrath<\/i>,8<\/sup><\/a> primarily because the Greek word \u1f85\u03b4\u1fc3<\/a> (a form of \u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) was translated hell <\/i>in the KJV. But now it\u2019s obvious that the rich man (and Lazarus, for that matter) had ceased from troubling <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV), from turmoil <\/i>(NET), and whatever fury of rage <\/i>they may have had against man or God had burnt out <\/i>(English Elpenor). <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The rich man seemed to think that he was entitled to some help from Lazarus, and it would be strange indeed that Lazarus lay<\/a><\/i> at the rich man\u2019s gate if he received no help there. There is clearly a judgment in Jesus\u2019 description of death: Child, remember that<\/a> in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish<\/i>,9<\/sup><\/a> Abraham had said to the rich man. But it is certainly not THE judgment (Matthew 25:41-46 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen [<\/em>the Son of Man<\/a>]<\/em> will say to those on his left, \u2018Depart from me, you accursed<\/a>, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels! For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink. I was a stranger and you did not receive me as a guest, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.\u2019 Then they too will answer<\/a>, \u2018Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not give you whatever you needed? [Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u2019 Then he will answer them, \u2018I tell you the truth, just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.\u2019 And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, in my bid to live<\/i>…by every word that comes from the mouth of God<\/i>,10<\/sup><\/a> I\u2019ll favor the translation of Job 3:17a in the English Elpenor version of the Septuagint over that in the NETS. The immediate upshot of taking Jesus\u2019 description of death literally is a better understanding of his puzzling statement to Martha before he raised her brother Lazarus from the dead: \u201cI am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives <\/i>(\u1f41<\/a>\u00a0\u03b6\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>) and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?\u201d<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek word translated will<\/i>…die <\/i>in the phrase will never die <\/i>above was not \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, the 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a> in the indicative mood<\/a> and future tense. Rather, it was\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u1f71\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>, the 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a> in the subjunctive mood<\/a> and second aorist tense<\/a> (e.g.<\/em>, may<\/em>…die<\/em>). Since never<\/em> was the NET translation of \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> in Greek, \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f74 \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u1f71\u03bd\u1fc3 is an example of the Subjunctive of Emphatic Negation<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

…the Subjunctive Mood indicates the probability of an event, and the Aorist Tense emphasizes an action as simply occurring…Thus, when you have \u03bf\u1f50 \u00b5\u1f75 (ou m\u0113) in combination with the Aorist Subjunctive, what occurs is the absolute and unequivocal denial of the probability of an event EVER OCCURING at any moment or time in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This particular subjunctive of emphatic negation was followed by a phrase that was rarely translated<\/a> into English: \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>. It was rendered to the age<\/em> in Young’s Literal Translation<\/a>. A note (50<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged that \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f74 \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u1f71\u03bd\u1fc3 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd \u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1 meant \u201cwill never die forever\u201d in Greek. It\u2019s easy to understand why Martha was reluctant to affirm her faith in such a statement. Instead, she affirmed her faith<\/a> in the One who said it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I couple this with Paul\u2019s enigmatic statement (2 Corinthians 5:6-9 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth (\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b7\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>\u00a0\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a>\u00a0\u03c3\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>; KJV: <\/em>at home in the body)<\/em> we are absent from the Lord\u2014for we live (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> by faith, not by sight. Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So then whether we are alive (\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b7\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> or away, we make it our ambition to please him.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those who live and believe in Jesus simply skip over death: a sojourn in Hades. What we call death <\/i>from our limited perspectives<\/a> has no impact on our ambition <\/i>(\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) to please <\/i>(\u03b5\u1f50\u1f71\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03ac\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) him<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

But I\u2019m struck how Jesus confirmed Job\u2019s words with Abraham\u2019s description of Lazarus\u2019 death: now he is comforted here<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul recounted a life circumstance that was similar to Job\u2019s question: Why then is light given to those in bitterness, and life to souls in pain<\/i>?16<\/sup><\/a> (2 Corinthians 1:8 NET [Table<\/a>]):<\/span><\/p>\n

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, regarding the affliction that happened to us<\/a> in the province of Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired (\u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> even of living (\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b6\u1fc6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Paul\u2019s writing, however, we also get a glimpse how the righteous, by the grace of God, respond to a sentence of death <\/i>(2 Corinthians 1:9 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n
