In another essay<\/a> I quoted Paul: For <\/i>[the day of the Lord<\/a><\/i>] will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction <\/i>(\u1f41<\/a> \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>).1<\/sup><\/a> Now I have to consider whether my assumption that Jesus called Judas Iscariot \u1f41 \u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03c0\u03c9\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2 (NET: the one destined for destruction<\/i><\/a>) is like Jesus’ disciples’ discussion about having no bread<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/i>after He said: \u201cWatch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!\u201d<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Here I’ll begin with Paul’s conclusion to his discussion of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03c5\u03c6\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f41<\/a> \u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, the revelation of the man of lawlessness <\/i>(2 Thessalonians 2:12 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>And so all of them who have not believed the truth but4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> have delighted in5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> evil will be condemned.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This would be a very straightforward statement if the Greek word translated will be condemned <\/i>(KJV: might be damned<\/i>) was \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>). You have condemned <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) and murdered the righteous person<\/i>,6<\/sup><\/a> James wrote of the rich. [T]he chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about <\/i>[Paul], Festus explained to King Agrippa, asking for a sentence of condemnation7<\/sup><\/a> <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u1f77\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7<\/a>) against him<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek word \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7<\/a> is the noun form of the verb \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>. Paul had clearly understood this \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03af\u03ba\u03b7 as a sentence of death if convicted: If then I am in the wrong and have done anything that deserves death, I am not trying to escape dying, but if not one of their charges against me is true, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus used a form of the verb \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 in quite another way (Matthew 12:1-3a, 7 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pick heads of wheat and eat them. But when the Pharisees saw this they said10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to him, \u201cLook, your disciples are doing what is against the law to do on the Sabbath.\u201d He said to them… <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you had known what this means: \u2018I want mercy11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and not sacrifice,\u2019 you would not have condemned the innocent.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here the Pharisees’ stated their opinion<\/a> that Jesus’ disciples’ behavior in Jesus’ presence was contrary to the law, and they implied that they or Jesus or someone ought to do something about it against Jesus’ disciples. Jesus characterized this as \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9\u03c4\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> (NET: you<\/i>…have condemned the innocent<\/i>). I tell you that on the day of judgment, <\/i>He said later, people will give an account for every worthless word they speak<\/a> <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9).12<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

And finally, Jesus taught (Luke 6:35-37 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

…love your enemies, and do good, and lend,13<\/sup><\/a><\/em> expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the14<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people. Be merciful,15<\/sup><\/a><\/em> just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do<\/a> not condemn (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9), and you will not be condemned (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9)<\/em>; forgive, and you will be forgiven [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In 2 Thessalonians 2:12 (NET)<\/a> the Greek word translated will be condemned <\/i>was not \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> or any other form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>. It was \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>. A note (25<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged that the Greek is \u201cbe judged,\u201d but added \u201cin this context the term clearly refers to a judgment of condemnation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

An entry in Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers<\/a> on Bible Hub<\/a> online reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

That they all<\/b>.\u2014This is God\u2019s purpose in making them believe the lie\u2014\u201cin order that, one and all, they might be judged.\u201d He who desireth not the death of a sinner, now is said actually to lay plans with the intention of judging him: such are the bold self-contradictions of the Bible!<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Meyer’s NT Commentary<\/a> on the same page reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9<\/a>] i<\/span><\/span><\/em>n order <\/span><\/span>that they may be judged, <\/span><\/span><\/em>i.e.<\/span><\/span> according to the context, <\/span><\/span><\/em>condemned<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>It seems that context <\/i>here refers to: the day of the Lord<\/i><\/a>. Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer<\/a> cited \u201cThe Church Fathers<\/i>\u201d approvingly: Irenaeus<\/a>, Tertullian<\/a>, Chrysostom<\/a>, Cyril<\/a>, Augustine<\/a>, Theodoret<\/a>, Theodorus Mopsuestius<\/a> \u201cand others.\u201d16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

They correctly agree in considering that by the advent (2 Thessalonians 2:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:8), or the day of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 2:2), is to be understood the <\/span><\/span><\/em>personal <\/span><\/span>advent of Christ <\/span><\/span><\/em>for the last judgment and for the completion of the Messianic kingdom<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Given that Jesus said, do<\/a> not condemn <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9), and you will not be condemned <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9),17<\/sup><\/a> it seems more circumspect to understand the text as written: in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness<\/i>.18<\/sup><\/a> I realize that Jesus also said, Do not judge <\/i>(\u03ba\u03c1\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), and you will not be judged <\/i>(\u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9),19<\/sup><\/a> but \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> (another form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9) is actually in the text.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul wrote of God’s judgment (not mine) on all<\/i>…who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a> If I hold to the text as written I believe I will know<\/i>…the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom <\/i>[He] sent<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a> Now <\/i>(\u03b4\u1f73<\/a>) this is eternal life<\/i>,22<\/sup><\/a> according to Jesus. If, on the other hand, I change \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> to \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> or understand \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> as if it were \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, that’s on me: Then I have condemned <\/i>those whom God judged<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though I called 2 Thessalonians 2:12 \u201cPaul’s conclusion<\/a>,\u201d And so <\/i>(NET) and in order that <\/i>(NASB) were translations of the Greek word \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>. This is a result clause. And \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, will be condemned <\/i>(NET) or may be judged <\/i>(NASB), is a verb in the subjunctive mood<\/a> \u201cin a purpose or result clause, [so] the action should not be thought of as a possible result, but should be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.\u201d What is that other stated action?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>God sends<\/i>23<\/sup><\/a> on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a> Once my mind is swept clean of the notion that \u03ba\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> was a euphemism for Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels<\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a> it becomes much clearer that God’s judgment on all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil<\/i>26<\/sup><\/a> is to send on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false<\/i>. Here again<\/a> this is a judgment, not necessarily THE judgment.<\/span><\/p>\n

This judgment doesn’t preclude Jesus’ promise<\/a> to draw all to Himself. On the contrary it could be instrumental to that drawing. When people believe what is false<\/i>, they create a social situation like the one in which we currently live. Are there many among us not seeking some different way to live? <\/a>The Greek words translated deluding influence<\/i> were \u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03bb\u1f71\u03bd\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>). One of the meanings of \u03c0\u03bb\u03ac\u03bd\u03b7 in the Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online is \u201ca wandering, roaming.\u201d One might say that God’s judgment is a God-given energy to wander.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek word translated so that <\/i>was \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a>. And they will believe <\/i>was \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, an infinitive (to trust<\/em>) of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a> in the aorist tense<\/a>, rather than \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9(\u03bd)<\/a> in the future tense. The entire clause began with \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, translated Consequently <\/i>(NET), or And for this reason <\/i>(NASB 1977, Legacy Standard Bible).<\/span><\/p>\n

So, the them <\/i>on whom God sends a deluding influence (a God-given energy to wander) are those who are perishing,<\/i>27<\/sup><\/a> because they found no place in their hearts for the truth so as to be saved<\/i>.28<\/sup><\/a> A note (21<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged that they found no place in their hearts for the truth <\/i>was \u201cthey did not accept (\u1f10\u03b4\u1f73\u03be\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) the love of the truth\u201d in Greek. This is already at least round two of Jesus’ drawing: the love of the truth was offered but not \u201creceive[d] approvingly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Apart from the God-given energy to wander I might have spent my entire life here, hanging around a church, not quite believing Jesus or the Bible, conning myself that I did. The God-given energy to wander, and then to trust what was false was at least a faith<\/i>. Part of what is false that I believed was that faith<\/a><\/em> was bad<\/a>, only knowledge was good. <\/span><\/p>\n

It took some time and experimentation to realize that disbelieving Jesus and the Bible wasn’t the result of some superior knowledge. It wasn’t even unbelief<\/em> in any absolute sense of not <\/em>faith. It was simply faith in something less than Jesus and the Bible. When the Lord brought me back from that particular foray into what is false, I returned almost unwittingly with a new theme song<\/a> but certainly with a new and lifelong motivation to not be fooled again<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The Greek word translated are perishing <\/i>was \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a middle\/passive participle of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a> in the present tense. This might have been translated \u201cto be lost,\u201d one of the possible meanings of the middle voice<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>In other words, God’s judgment, a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false<\/i>29<\/sup><\/a> came on \u201cthose who are presently lost because they did not accept the love of the truth.\u201d But even if our gospel is veiled<\/i>, Paul wrote the Corinthians, it is veiled only to those who are perishing <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>; KJV: are lost<\/i>, presently), among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of those who do not believe so they would not see<\/i>30<\/sup><\/a> the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God<\/i>.31<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

The interchangeability of are perishing <\/i>and are lost <\/i>is apparent in Jesus’ parable (Luke 15:4 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Which one of you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f73\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> one of them, would not leave the ninety-nine32<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the open pasture and go look for the one that is lost (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c9\u03bb\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9, \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03cd\u03c9)<\/em> until he finds it?<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here is none of the false counsel given to Little Bo Peep<\/a> in the nursery rhyme. Jesus (and his listeners apparently) knew that a lost <\/i>sheep was a sheep in danger of perishing<\/i>. It isn’t necessary to believe in \u201cbold self-contradictions of the Bible.\u201d33<\/sup><\/a> The language as written allows one to believe that Christ, who is the image of God<\/a><\/i>, came to seek and to save the lost <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c9\u03bb\u1f79\u03c2)34<\/sup><\/a> or perishing.<\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

These lost are them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth <\/i>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>), that they might be saved<\/i>.35<\/sup><\/a> Set them apart in the truth<\/a> <\/i>(\u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f77\u1fb3), Jesus prayed to his Father, your word is truth <\/i>(\u1f00\u03bb\u1f75\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1).36<\/sup><\/a> The Greek words translated your word <\/i>were \u1f41<\/a> \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f41 \u03c3\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>. This is the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, yet in the context of John’s Gospel<\/a> account \u1f41 \u03bb\u1f79\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2 \u1f41 \u03c3\u1f78\u03c2 is also Jesus Himself (Hebrews 1:1-3 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

After God spoke long ago in various portions and in various ways to our ancestors through the prophets, in these last37<\/sup><\/a><\/em> days he has spoken to us in a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he created the world (\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>; literally: <\/em>the ages38<\/sup><\/a>)<\/em>. The Son is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, and he sustains all things by his powerful word (\u03c1\u1f75\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, and so when he had39<\/sup><\/a><\/em> accomplished cleansing for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Meyer’s NT Commentary<\/a> reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span><\/em>truth <\/span><\/span>is the <\/span><\/span><\/em>Christian <\/span><\/span>truth, and the <\/span><\/span><\/em>unbelief<\/span><\/span>, shown against it, is the consequence of the love for the truth in general being wanting (2 Thessalonians 2:10).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I’m unsure what the author meant by Christian<\/i>, so I’ll highlight what I am sure Paul did not mean by truth<\/i>; namely, the squabbling of those who profess Christ. Here is Meyer’s NT Commentary<\/a> again:<\/span><\/p>\n

The view of the Fathers remained in the following ages the prevalent one in the Christian church. It was necessary, however, partially to change and transform it, the relation of Christianity to the Roman state having altered, as the Christian church, instead of being exposed to renewed hostilities from the secular power, had obtained the sovereignty of the state, and, penetrating larger portions of the world, represented itself as the kingdom of God on earth, and an imposing hierarchy was placed at its head. Whilst, accordingly, the idea of the advent stepped more and more into the background in the church generally, and especially with the hierarchy, on the other hand, those who had placed themselves in opposition to the hierarchy believed themselves obliged to apply to it the description of the apostle, as well as the figures in the Apocalypse of St. John.
