{"id":2129,"date":"2013-02-26T00:39:23","date_gmt":"2013-02-25T18:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=2129"},"modified":"2025-12-14T14:16:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T20:16:39","slug":"son-of-god-john-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=2129","title":{"rendered":"Son of God &#8211; John, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is round two of my attempt to determine whether <i>that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/19\/son-of-god-john-part-2\/\">judgment\/condemnation<\/a> <i>God did not send <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn12\">his<\/a> Son into the world to<\/i> do<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> and <i>has been<\/i> done <i>already<\/i> to the <i>one who does not believe<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> or <i>the basis for judging<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> and the rationale or justification for another unspecified judgment\/condemnation. \u00a0Secondly, assuming that this unspecified judgment\/condemnation is to burn in hell for all eternity, I am attempting to discover whether John 3:16-21 offers any scriptural support for the gospel I was socialized into: believe in the Lord Jesus Christ or burn in hell for all eternity.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus certainly taught his disciples about hell (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gee.html#geenna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03ad\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/net.bible.org\/bible\/Matthew+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">note (27)<\/a> in the NET provides a brief historical sketch: \u201cThe word translated <i>hell<\/i> is &#8216;Gehenna&#8217; (\u03b3\u03ad\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b1, geenna), a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew words <i>ge hinnom<\/i> (&#8216;Valley of Hinnom&#8217;). This was the valley along the south side of Jerusalem. In OT times it was used for human sacrifices to the pagan god Molech (cf. Jer 7:31; 19:5-6; 32:35), and it came to be used as a place where human excrement and rubbish were disposed of and burned. In the intertestamental period, it came to be used symbolically as the place of divine punishment (cf. <i>1 En.<\/i> 27:2, 90:26; <i>4 Ezra<\/i> 7:36).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/16\/fear-genesis-part-7\/#sdfootnote11sym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fear<\/a> the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell.\u00a0 Yes, I tell you, fear him!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites!\u00a0 You cross land and sea to make one convert, and when you get one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>You snakes, you offspring of vipers!\u00a0 How will you escape being condemned to hell?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He made the following comparisons:\u00a0 <i>It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/08\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-2\/#sdfootnote87sym\">thrown<\/a> into hell<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/08\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-2\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<i>It is better for you<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><i> to enter into life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, to the unquenchable fire<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>It is better<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><i> to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into fiery hell<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>It is better<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><i> to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><i> where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And finally Jesus said, <i>whoever says \u201cFool\u201d will be sent to fiery hell<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_negation\"><\/a>That is some strong language.\u00a0 It lends credence to the NET translation, <i>Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light<\/i>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 After all, this section begins with the statement that God <i>gave <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/07\/31\/a-door-of-hope-part-1\/#_ftn11\">his<\/a> one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Greek word translated <em>will<\/em>&#8230;<i>perish<\/i> is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoll.html#apollumi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 (The negation is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a>.)\u00a0 One of the metaphorical definitions of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> according to the NET online Bible is: \u201c1e) metaph. to devote or give over to eternal misery in hell.\u201d\u00a0 It is translated <i>lose<\/i> in Matthew 5:29, 30 (NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! \u00a0It is better to lose <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell. \u00a0If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! \u00a0It is better to lose <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> one of your members than to have your whole body <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/08\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-2\/#sdfootnote87sym\">go<\/a> into hell<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/08\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-2\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was translated <i>be lost<\/i> in the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:10, 12-14 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>See that you do not disdain one of these little ones <em>[<\/em>who believe in me<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>].\u00a0<\/em> For I tell you that their angels in heaven always <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn8\">see<\/a> the face of my Father in heaven&#8230;What do you think? \u00a0If someone owns a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn10\">leave<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn11\">ninety-nine<\/a> on the mountains <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn12\">and<\/a> go look for the one that went astray? \u00a0And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice more over it than over the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn13\">ninety-nine<\/a> that did not go astray. \u00a0In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#ouk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> <a kingdom. \u00a0There will be great earthquakes, and famines and plagues in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven. \u00a0But before all<em><a this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" prisons.\u00a0 You will be brought<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> before kings and governors because of my name. \u00a0This<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a><\/em> will be a time for you to serve as witnesses. \u00a0Therefore be resolved<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> not to rehearse ahead of time how to make your defense. \u00a0For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of your adversaries will be able to withstand or<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a><\/em> contradict. \u00a0You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will have some of you put to death. \u00a0You will be hated by everyone because of my name. \u00a0Yet not a hair of your head will perish <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>By your endurance you will gain your lives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>When they were all satisfied<\/i>, after Jesus fed 5,000 or more people with five loaves of bread and two fish, <i>Jesus said to his disciples, \u201cGather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing is wasted<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>)<i>.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> was translated <i>to perish<\/i> once again in John\u2019s Gospel when Caiaphas prophesied (John 11:49-53 NET).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, \u201cYou know nothing at all! \u00a0You do not realize that it is more to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn1\">your<\/a> advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apolh.html#apolhtai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>).<\/em>\u201d \u00a0(Now he did not say this on his own, but because he was high priest that year, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn2\">he prophesied<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn3\">Jesus<\/a> was going to die for the Jewish nation <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, and not for the Jewish nation only, but to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.) \u00a0So from that day <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn4\">they planned together<\/a> to kill him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>\u201cHe was led like a sheep to slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.\u00a0 In humiliation justice<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) <i>was taken from him.\u00a0 Who can describe his posterity?\u00a0 For his life was taken away from the earth.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/26\/son-of-god-john-part-3\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This was the passage from Isaiah that the Ethiopian eunuch read\u00a0(aloud presumably) when Philip was led by the Holy Spirit to accompany his chariot on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza.\u00a0 <i>Then the eunuch said to Philip, \u201cPlease tell me, who is the prophet saying this about \u2013 himself or someone else?\u201d \u00a0So Philip started speaking, and beginning with this scripture proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\"
