Now I know that Eliphaz was a king who heard Job lament: <i>I should have slept and been at rest, with kings [and] councillors of the earth, who gloried in [their] swords<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/08\/nothing-true-part-3\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> So now I hear sarcasm in the words of Eliphaz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hebrew word translated <i>we assay <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and <i>someone should attempt <\/i>(NET) was <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5254\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ac\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (<i>n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>). He had received the promises, yet he was ready to offer up his only son. God had told him, \u201cThrough Isaac descendants will carry on your name,\u201d and he reasoned that God could even raise him from the dead, and in a sense he received him back from there. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s not too difficult to say that God <i>did prove <\/i>(Tanakh), <i>did tempt <\/i>(KJV), <i>tested <\/i>(NET, NETS) or <i>tempted <\/i>(English Elpenor) Job. That is precisely what the translators of the Tanakh on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/16406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chabad.org<\/a> decided that Eliphaz said to him (Job 4:2 Chabad Tanakh):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;Because He tested you with [one] thing, should you weary? Who can withhold words?<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But I wonder now if Eliphaz thought to continue that proving, tempting or testing by his own words. In fact, most occurrences of forms of <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5254\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (<i>n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) in the Masoretic text were translated with forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the Septuagint (see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/08\/nothing-true-part-3\/#_Tablea\">table<\/a> below). One (Deuteronomy 28:56) was translated with a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>, the noun form of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pep.html#pepeiramai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peiraw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a> (<i>e.g<\/i>., \u201cto be used to\u201d) makes it clear that David did not disparage the king&#8217;s offer or the battle attire offered. I think the rabbis who translated the Septuagint were confronting forms of <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5254\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (<i>n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) here, and grappled with nuances that the English translator of the Elpenor Septuagint ignored even in Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This brings me full circle to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html#mh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#pollakis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f71\u03ba\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, the apparent translation of <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5254\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ac\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (<i>n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) in Job 4:2. Though the literal meaning is <i>not often <\/i>the English translators of both versions of the Septuagint treated this phrase as a rhetorical question: <i>Have you often<\/i> (NETS) or <i>Hast thou been often <\/i>(English Elpenor). This is embarrassing. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even beyond embarrassing, it is disconcerting because it is around this same time that I thought Jesus was a conceited know-it-all, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_atheism\">rude<\/a>, overly critical, laying word traps into which people would fall so He could <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#_defensive\">berate them<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I was neither self-aware enough nor honest enough to acknowledge those beliefs at the time. I only became aware of them as I knew Him better and they were replaced by a better understanding of the Bible. (I certainly knew how I was supposed to feel about Jesus, and was as practiced as anyone, I suppose, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fake_it_till_you_make_it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake it till you make it<\/a> school of Christian teaching.) This time studying through the book of Job it seems fairly clear that Eliphaz accused Job of being an empty talker, a hypocrite, if you will, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/#_modern\">modern sense<\/a> of the word. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hebrew word <span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h926\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc<\/a><\/span> (<i>b\u0101hal<\/i>), translated <i>and thou art troubled <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV), <i>and you are terrified <\/i>(NET), was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#espoudasas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sp.html#spoudazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>), translated <i>thou art troubled <\/i>(English Elpenor) and <i>you acted in haste <\/i>(NETS). Being more familiar with forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sp.html#spoudazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the New Testament, I thought this was an odd, even a questionable, choice.
