\u201cIf one ventures a word with you, will you become impatient?\u201d<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> I thought Eliphaz was kind and very mindful of Job’s distress when I only read this English translation of the Masoretic text. Now I know that Eliphaz was a king who heard Job lament: I should have slept and been at rest, with kings [and] councillors of the earth, who gloried in [their] swords<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a> So now I hear sarcasm in the words of Eliphaz.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hebrew word translated we assay <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and someone should attempt <\/i>(NET) was \u05d4\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ac\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>). For what does the scripture say? \u201cAbraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.\u201d<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> We are told explicitly (Hebrews 11:17-19 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

By faith Abraham, when he was tested (\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03b1\u03b6\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, offered up Isaac. He had received the promises, yet he was ready to offer up his only son. God had told him, \u201cThrough Isaac descendants will carry on your name,\u201d and he reasoned that God could even raise him from the dead, and in a sense he received him back from there. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s not too difficult to say that God did prove <\/i>(Tanakh), did tempt <\/i>(KJV), tested <\/i>(NET, NETS) or tempted <\/i>(English Elpenor) Job. That is precisely what the translators of the Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a> decided that Eliphaz said to him (Job 4:2 Chabad Tanakh):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Because He tested you with [one] thing, should you weary? Who can withhold words?<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I wonder now if Eliphaz thought to continue that proving, tempting or testing by his own words. Or did he try <\/i>(Tanakh), tempt <\/i>(KJV, English Elpenor) or test <\/i>(NET) God?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Both of these examples of forms of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) were translated with forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the Septuagint. In fact, most occurrences of forms of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) in the Masoretic text were translated with forms of \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the Septuagint (see table<\/a> below). One (Deuteronomy 28:56) was translated with a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>, the noun form of the verb \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>. Four (twice in Deuteronomy 6:16, once each in Deuteronomy 8:2 and 8:16) were translated with forms of \u1f10\u03ba\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>, leaving only two outliers and an allied word to consider. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Greek word \u1f10\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u1f77\u03b1\u03c3\u03b5(\u03bd)<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03b9\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> (NETS: he grew tired<\/i>), cuts right to the heart of the matter and highlights the humor of this boy laboring to move in a man’s battle gear. And \u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03b5\u1f77\u03c1\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in the middle voice<\/a> (e.g<\/i>., \u201cto be used to\u201d) makes it clear that David did not disparage the king’s offer or the battle attire offered. I think the rabbis who translated the Septuagint were confronting forms of \u05e0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) here, and grappled with nuances that the English translator of the Elpenor Septuagint ignored even in Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n

This brings me full circle to \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f71\u03ba\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, the apparent translation of \u05d4\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ac\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) in Job 4:2. Though the literal meaning is not often <\/i>the English translators of both versions of the Septuagint treated this phrase as a rhetorical question: Have you often<\/i> (NETS) or Hast thou been often <\/i>(English Elpenor). This is a legitimate way to treat \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> at the beginning of a clause:5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Introducing a rhetorical question which expects a negative answer:<\/span>

Though I might otherwise have questioned whether \u05d4\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05e1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ac\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (n\u0101s\u00e2<\/i>) was the original word the rabbis found to translate, this exercise has made me more willing to assume that they recognized nuance in the Hebrew that I might miss in a more direct Greek translation. The rabbis didn’t hear Eliphaz requesting permission to speak if it would not cause Job too much distress. They heard an assertion, if not an accusation, that Job was unaccustomed to such distress. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I looked back at the words when I first read the book of Job (Job 4:3-5 NASB):<\/span><\/p>\n

Behold, you have taught many, And you have strengthened weak hands. Your words have helped the stumbling to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees. But now it comes to you, and you are impatient; It touches you, and you are horrified.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I thought Eliphaz was reasoning calmly with Job, encouraging (if not praising him, but certainly encouraging) him to return again to the man he once was. This is embarrassing. <\/span>Even beyond embarrassing, it is disconcerting because it is around this same time that I thought Jesus was a conceited know-it-all, rude<\/a>, overly critical, laying word traps into which people would fall so He could berate them<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was neither self-aware enough nor honest enough to acknowledge those beliefs at the time. I only became aware of them as I knew Him better and they were replaced by a better understanding of the Bible. (I certainly knew how I was supposed to feel about Jesus, and was as practiced as anyone, I suppose, in the fake it till you make it<\/a> school of Christian teaching.) This time studying through the book of Job it seems fairly clear that Eliphaz accused Job of being an empty talker, a hypocrite, if you will, in the modern sense<\/a> of the word. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Hebrew word \u05d5\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b5\u05bd\u05dc<\/a><\/span> (b\u0101hal<\/i>), translated and thou art troubled <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV), and you are terrified <\/i>(NET), was \u1f10\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>), translated thou art troubled <\/i>(English Elpenor) and you acted in haste <\/i>(NETS). Being more familiar with forms of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the New Testament, I thought this was an odd, even a questionable, choice. So I reviewed some of the verses containing forms of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

[James, Cephas, and John<\/a><\/i>] requested only that we remember the poor, the very thing I also was eager <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) to do<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a> I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called<\/i>…making every effort <\/i>(\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a> Make every effort <\/i>(\u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u1f7b\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9) to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
