{"id":21463,"date":"2023-07-30T16:26:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-30T21:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=21463"},"modified":"2024-06-26T13:48:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T18:48:35","slug":"christianity-part-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=21463","title":{"rendered":"Christianity, Part 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/pantas_3956.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">occurrences<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in Romans [see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#_Tablea\">Table<\/a> below] the Greek word translated <i>all people <\/i>in: <i>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pas.html#pas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) <i>to myself.<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> I&#8217;ll consider seven of them in some detail. The first occurrence is probably universal (Romans 3:9 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I might argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> was limited here by <i>both Jews and Greeks <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/io.html#ioudaious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f38\u03bf\u03c5\u03b4\u03b1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/te.html#te\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/el.html#ellhnas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1fde\u0395\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>) to those people living around the Mediterranean Sea at the time Paul wrote his letter to Roman believers. The context argues against it. I&#8217;ve never heard anyone make that argument. But consider what Jesus said (Luke 5:32 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If I refuse to take this as evidence of the existence of righteous people Jesus did <i>not come to call<\/i>, I am likely to take <i>righteous <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>) as his rhetorical contrast to <i>sinners <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amartwlous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>), the <i>all <\/i>He came <i>to call<\/i>&#8230;<i>to repentance<\/i>. This is especially true if I remember Peter (2 Peter 3:9 ESV [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/04\/21\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-5\/#_ftn29\">you<\/a>, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1f71\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/meta.html#metanoia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>For there is no distinction <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>], Paul clarified, <i>for all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2)<i> have sinned and fall short of the glory of God<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> This leads to the next occurrence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in Romans, but it is prefaced by a discussion I call the limit of the law (Romans 3:19, 20 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#ou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f50<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiwqhsetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03c9\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pas.html#pasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f70\u03c1\u03be<\/a>)<\/em> in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I did alright as an atheist as long as I was willing to consider myself <i>evil<\/i>. I was playing kind of a word game, since I had already \u201cdecided that what God said was evil was at least potentially good, and what God said was good was probably generally evil.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Paul&#8217;s \u201climit of the law\u201d became important to me eventually because:<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When I wanted to consider myself good again I invented \u201cmore realistic\u201d rules than <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">y<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>e<\/sup><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">h\u00f4v\u00e2h\u2019s <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to obey. I failed to obey them. So I made \u201ceven more realistic\u201d rules. Eventually my standards were so low even I realized they were unworkable. And I still wasn\u2019t keeping them! <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I returned to faith I knew my own limitations but still expected Jesus to help me to have <i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> my obedience to the law, that is. He wouldn&#8217;t help me do that. He helped me to believe my own experience and Paul&#8217;s writing instead: <i>by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><i> since through the law comes knowledge of sin<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> Only then was I ready to receive <i>the righteousness of God <\/i>(Romans 3:21-26 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it\u2014the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> <em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greekdoc.com\/bible\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> who believe. For there is no distinction <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>: for all <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God\u2019s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\">to show<\/a> his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> is clearly limited by <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuontas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (ESV: <i>who believe<\/i>). Of all the sinners who have ever lived on earth only those <i>who believe <\/i>have <i>the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> And since the total number of sinners is equal to the total number of people except for Jesus Christ, of all the other people who have ever lived on earth only those <i>who believe are justified by <\/i>[God&#8217;s] <i>grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> That&#8217;s where I began my own journey, so that&#8217;s where I&#8217;ll begin here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given my history, that was a heavy burden for <i>my faith <\/i>to bear. I should point out that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuontas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (ESV: <i>believe<\/i>) is in the present tense, which has a now and forever aspect to it. Jesus warned his disciples (Matthew 24:9-14 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name\u2019s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a while, I relied on my faith to accomplish all of this, believing <i>my faith <\/i>was <i>faith in Jesus Christ<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> despite the fact that He wouldn&#8217;t help me to have <i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> I had noticed that the word <i>in <\/i>in the phrase <i>faith in Jesus Christ <\/i>was not actually a preposition in Greek: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> |<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ih.html#ihsou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>. I even questioned why the <a href=\"http:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#GENITIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genitive case<\/a> was translated <i>faith <b>in <\/b>Jesus Christ <\/i>when <i>of <\/i>would have been a more normal translation. Still, the <i>faith <\/i>of <i>Jesus Christ <\/i>didn&#8217;t resonate with me until Peter&#8217;s stroll on the Sea of Galilee <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#_defensive\">rocked my world<\/a>. After that I wanted \u201cto depend on Jesus\u2019 faith. He has the faith to stand on the water and hold Peter up as well.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> Then I heard (Romans 3:21-24 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (although it is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed\u2014namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> who believe. For there is no distinction <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A lengthy note (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+3:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27<\/a>) in the NET explained the translators&#8217; choice for <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> |<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ih.html#ihsou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, <i>the faithfulness of Jesus Christ<\/i>. Though a \u201cdecision is difficult here\u201d and \u201cthe grammar is not decisive,\u201d my own experience of Jesus&#8217; faithfulness was sufficient to persuade me that the one who wrote, <i>I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> would encourage sinners to <i>believe <\/i>in <i>the faithfulness of Jesus Christ <\/i>rather than <i>faith in Jesus Christ<\/i>, to rely wholly on Him rather than some ephemeral thing they conjure in their own minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The next three occurrences of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> follow (Romans 5:12-21 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> men because all <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> sinned\u2014for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/27\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\">Moses<\/a>, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 3:1-24<\/a>]<\/em>, who was a type of the one who was to come <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/27\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man\u2019s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. For as by the one man\u2019s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man\u2019s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first occurrence of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> here is limited by <i>men <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anq.html#anqrwpos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), human beings created male and female rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/and.html#andras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f04\u03bd\u03b4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/anh.html#anhr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03bd\u03ae\u03c1<\/a>), <i>men <\/i>as distinct from <i>women <\/i>or <i>boys<\/i>. But the point is that <i>death spread to all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>) people <i>because all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>) <i>sinned<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s in this light that I want to consider Paul&#8217;s usage of forms of the adjective <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2<\/a> (Romans 5:15b ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For if many <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> died through one man\u2019s trespass, much <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#pollw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1ff7<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2)<\/em> more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#pollous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first <i>many <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f31<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76<\/a>, and can be legitimately translated \u201cthese many\u201d or \u201cthose many,\u201d referring back to <i>all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>): <i>For if <\/i>[these] <i>many died through one man\u2019s trespass<\/i>. The next clause is related to the first one by <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#pollw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1ff7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mal.html#mallon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1fb6\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, <i>much more<\/i> (ESV). So, the second clause grows <i>much more <\/i>from the first: <i>much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many<\/i>. The Greek words translated <i>for many <\/i>were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eis.html#eis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#pollous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a>, which could legitimately be translated \u201cfor these many\u201d or \u201cfor those many,\u201d referring immediately back to \u03bf\u1f31 \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76 (\u201cthese many\u201d or \u201cthose many\u201d) who <i>died <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apeq.html#apeqanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqnhskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I think the <i>cleverness <\/i>of the usage of forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03cd\u03c2<\/a> here is directly attributable to Paul&#8217;s knowledge that though Jesus died He was exempt from the <i>all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>) who sinned, and though <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+5:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enoch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Kings+2:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elijah<\/a> sinned, they were exempt from the <i>all <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>) who died. Granted, those who <i>believe <\/i>in <i>the faithfulness of Jesus Christ <\/i>may find it easier to hear than those who <i>believe <\/i>in <i>faith in Jesus Christ<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul switched from <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> to the adjective <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f76<\/a> again to continue his discussion: <i>For as by the one man\u2019s disobedience the many <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f31<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f77<\/a>) <i>were made sinners<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><i> <\/i>\u201cThese many\u201d or \u201cthose many\u201d who <i>were made sinners <\/i>refers back to the <i>all <\/i>for whom <i>one trespass led to condemnation<\/i>. The next clause continues: <i>so by the one man\u2019s obedience the many <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f31<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f77<\/a>) <i>will be made righteous<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> the same <i>many <\/i>who <i>were made sinners<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And again, this is easier to hear if one believes it will be accomplished by <i>the faithfulness of Jesus Christ <\/i>rather than by <i>faith in Jesus Christ<\/i>. Though God <i>made <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epo.html#epoihse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03bf\u1f77\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) <i>him to be sin<\/i>, I assume that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f31<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polloi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u1f77<\/a> gave Paul and the Holy Spirit the latitude to exempt Jesus from any necessity of being <i>made <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/katas.html#katastaqhsontai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <i>righteous <\/i>in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The last two occurrences of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pan.html#pantas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> that I&#8217;ll consider in this essay follow (Romans 11:29-32 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. If God shows mercy to someone as disobedient as I have been, it only gives Him more latitude to show mercy to someone as disobedient as you have been, and on, and on, and on, and on. <i>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth<\/i>, Jesus said, <i>will draw all people to myself<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/07\/30\/christianity-part-10\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This exercise, however, has made it quite clear to me that all of these things are easier to hear if one <i>believes <\/i>in <i>the faithfulness of Jesus Christ<\/i>. They are almost impossible to hear if one <i>believes faith in Christ<\/i> is the personal achievement that justifies one before God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The table
