Peter described Jesus to the crowd gathered at Pentecost as\u00a0a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds<\/a>, wonders<\/a>, and miraculous signs that God performed <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03bf\u1f77\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) among you through him, just as you yourselves<\/a> know<\/i>…1<\/sup><\/a> <\/span>The Greek word translated wonders <\/i>above was \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9(\u03bd)<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Now <\/i>[Jesus<\/a>] came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine. In Capernaum there was a certain royal official whose son was sick. When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him<\/a> to come down and heal his son, who was about to die <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. So Jesus said to him, \u201cUnless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!\u201d<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> <\/span>Here the word translated wonders <\/i>was \u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> (another form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2). <\/span><\/p>\n

I wrote about Jesus’ complex attitude to signs<\/em> (\u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) in another essay<\/a> and will simply continue with the story here (John 4:49, 50a NET).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSir,\u201d the official said to him, \u201ccome down before my child dies.\u201d Jesus told him, \u201cGo home; your son will live\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

John concluded this story: Jesus did this<\/a> as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a> The Greek word translated miraculous sign <\/i>was \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>. But Jesus had spoken of signs,<\/i> \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1<\/a>, a plural form of \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd and wonders<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the risk of being somewhat arbitrary, I’ll say that the miraculous sign<\/i> here was that without spells, potions or incantations Jesus healed the official’s son simply by promising that he would live. And so that leaves the wonders <\/i>(John 4:50b-53 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/a> man believed the word that<\/a> Jesus<\/a> spoke to him, and set off for home. While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him<\/a> that his son was going to live. So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and<\/a> they told<\/a> him, \u201cYesterday<\/a> at one o\u2019clock in the afternoon the fever left him.\u201d Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him<\/a>, \u201cYour son will live,\u201d and he himself believed along with his entire household [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, a man <\/i>who believed the word that<\/a> Jesus<\/a> spoke to him <\/i>enough to obey Him and go home had his faith confirmed by the timing of the fulfillment of that word while he was on the way. The pattern seems to hold, though I am hard-pressed to distinguish between signs and wonders (Acts 2:41-47 NET):<\/p>\n

So those who accepted<\/a> [Peter’s]<\/em> message were baptized, and that<\/a> day about 3,000 people were added [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. They were devoting themselves to the apostles\u2019 teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Reverential awe came over4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> everyone, and many wonders (\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em> and miraculous signs came about by the apostles. All who believed were together and held everything in common, and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need. Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts, praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> every day those who were being saved.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The text doesn’t specify the many wonders and miraculous signs <\/i>that came about <\/i>\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> (\u201cthrough, by, in the midst of\u201d) the apostles<\/i>. The wonders performed by God are evident, however, in the attitudes and actions described, so uncharacteristic of people generally, now normative for those who have been crucified with Christ<\/i><\/a>, and it is no longer<\/em> [they] who live, but Christ lives in <\/i>[them]. So the life <\/i>[they] now live in the body, <\/i>[they] live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved <\/i>[them] and gave himself for <\/i>[them],6<\/sup><\/a> on the cross, yes, but even beyond that through his indwelling Spirit. Though they met in the temple courts, their actions supported the creation of a priesthood of grace virtually overnight, independent of the priesthood of law. And those actions were prompted, not by a lawgiver on a mountain top but, by the Spirit of the living God moving in individual human hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a> For if the message spoken through angels <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; i.e.<\/i>, messengers<\/i>) proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders<\/i> (\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2) and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Paul complained to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 12:11, 12 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

I have become a fool.9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> You yourselves forced me to do it, for I should have been commended by you. For I lack nothing in comparison to those \u201csuper10<\/sup><\/a><\/em>-apostles,\u201d even though I am nothing. Indeed, the signs of an apostle were performed among you with great perseverance by signs and11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> wonders (\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em> and powerful deeds.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The signs of an apostle <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f70<\/a>…\u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>) were performed among you<\/i>, he wrote. Without specifying exactly what they were, he described them as signs and wonders and powerful deeds<\/i>. It makes sense at this point to actually look at what the apostles did.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a disciple called by Jesus<\/a> Peter had at best a very selective faith in Scripture: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

He was willing to argue with both Jesus’ word and the Scripture if they impacted his ego adversely. On the night of Jesus’ arrest Peter flailed with a sword<\/a> to protect Jesus, no doubt, but also to fulfill his own word that he would never fall away <\/i>(\u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f73\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> \u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) and, whether intentionally or not, to prove Jesus’ word and the Scripture false. On Pentecost not that long afterward the apostle Peter deftly handled the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God)<\/i>13<\/sup><\/a> to become one of the fishers of people <\/i><\/a> Jesus promised. Peter quoted the prophet Joel (Acts 2:19 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

And I will perform wonders (\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> another form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2)<\/em> in the sky above and miraculous signs on the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’ve presented Peter’s use of Scripture in its full context in another essay<\/a>, and discussed some of it in detail in others.14<\/sup><\/a> Here I’ll point out that the Hebrew word in the Masoretic text translated \u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> in the Septuagint and the New Testament was \u05de\u05bd\u05d5\u05b9\u05e4\u05b0\u05ea\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd<\/a> (m\u00f4p\u0304\u0113\u1e6f<\/i>). <\/a>So I’ll try to use forms of \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> for the sign<\/i>, the thing itself, and forms of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> for the wonder<\/i>, the voice of the sign <\/i>(\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>), the effect it has on the one who witnesses the sign<\/i>, to believe <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV\/NET) the messenger and ultimately the word of God. (The Hebrew word translated believe<\/em> was \u05d9\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05de\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> (‘\u0101man<\/i>) in the Masoretic text and the Greek was \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03c9\u03c3\u1f77(\u03bd)<\/a> in the Septuagint.) <\/a>The implication seems to be that even Pharaoh would have believed through these wonders<\/i>, except for the Lord’s promise to Moses: But I will harden his heart<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

After his resurrection Jesus said to his disciples (Luke 24:44-49 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese are my<\/a> words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses<\/a> and the<\/a> prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures, and said to them, \u201cThus it stands written<\/a> that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning<\/a> from Jerusalem. You<\/a> are<\/a> witnesses of these things. And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city<\/a> until you have been clothed with power from on high\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the sign <\/i>here is that Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures<\/i>. The wonder<\/i>, or the voice of the sign<\/i>, is the transformation in Peter’s regard for the Scriptures after he received the Holy Spirit, after he was clothed with power from on high<\/i>. And this transformation is one of the signs of an apostle<\/i>. It is impossible to imagine an apostle apart from this transformation, yet such a transformation is not exclusively the domain of apostles. It is to be expected in any who are drawn by Jesus, in all who have been crucified with Christ<\/i><\/a>, and it is no longer <\/i>[they] who live, but Christ lives in <\/i>[them].16<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus’ confidence in the Scriptures was unprecedented: <\/span>\u201cPut your<\/a> sword back into its sheath<\/i>,\u201d He said to Peter during his arrest. \u201cAm I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?\u201d<\/i>17<\/sup><\/a> \u201cHow then would the scriptures that say it must happen this way be fulfilled?\u201d<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a> [Y]our word is truth<\/i>,19<\/sup><\/a> He had prayed to his Father. Set them apart in the truth<\/a><\/i>,20<\/sup><\/a> He interceded for his disciples.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>And here, I get a glimpse of what false wonders <\/i>would be: For false messiahs and false prophets will appear<\/i>, Jesus warned, and perform great signs and wonders <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2) to deceive, if possible, even the elect<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a> Without specifying exactly what any particular sign <\/i>would be, Jesus warned that the wonder<\/i>, the voice of the sign<\/i>, would not result in confidence in the truth, God’s word, the Scriptures: great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
