Here the narrator called God \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05a3\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (Y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>) \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0591\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) in the Masoretic text, which was corroborated by \u039a\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint. But the serpent said \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) in the Masoretic text, and \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n

When did this happen? Is it still Friday, the sixth day? I’m going to say, no, because the text sounds like the sixth day was concluded before this happened: God saw all that he had made\u2014and it was very good! There was evening, and there was morning, the sixth day<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a> So, is it Saturday, the Sabbath? Again, I’ll say, no, because of the way I hear the text (Genesis 2:1-3 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

The heavens and the earth were completed with everything that was in them [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. By the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, and he ceased on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he ceased all the work that he had been doing in creation [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, I’m going to say that this conversation between Eve and the serpent occurred sometime between the following Sunday and Eve’s first conception. And the latter is just for my convenience, so I don’t have to deal with the ramifications of a child conceived before Adam sinned. I’ll leave that kind of speculation to Dan Brown<\/a>. Maybe I’ll see the movie if Ron Howard<\/a> is so inclined.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here the serpent called God \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) in the Masoretic text and \u1f41<\/a> \u0398\u03b5\u1f79\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint. He told Eve ye shall be as G-d<\/i>, \u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05bd\u05d0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (\u0115l\u014dh\u00eem<\/i>) in the Masoretic text, which was translated \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1f77<\/a> (gods<\/i>) in the Septuagint. The Masoretic text was translated gods <\/i>in the KJV and angels <\/i>in the Tanakh on chabad.org<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Satan’s working <\/i>(\u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd\u1fb6<\/a>): with all kinds of miracles and signs and false wonders<\/i>,2<\/sup><\/a> especially false wonders <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u03c8\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>). In another essay I developed a working definition of signs<\/i> and wonders<\/i><\/a>, and false wonders<\/i><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll try to use forms of \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> for the <\/span><\/span><\/em>sign<\/span><\/span>, the thing itself, and forms of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> for the <\/span><\/span><\/em>wonder<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/em>the voice of the sign<\/a><\/span><\/span> (\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c6\u03c9\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>), the effect it has on the one who witnesses the <\/span><\/span><\/em>sign<\/span><\/span>, to <\/span><\/span><\/em>believe <\/span><\/span>(Tanakh\/KJV\/NET) the messenger and ultimately the word of God.3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

For false messiahs and false prophets will appear<\/span><\/span>, Jesus warned, <\/span><\/span><\/em>and perform great signs and wonders<\/span><\/span> (\u03c4\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2) <\/span><\/span><\/em>to deceive, if possible, even the elect<\/span><\/span>.4<\/sup><\/a> Without specifying exactly what any particular <\/span><\/span><\/em>sign <\/span><\/span>would be, Jesus warned that the <\/span><\/span><\/em>wonder<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/em>the voice of the sign<\/span><\/span>, would not result in confidence in the truth<\/a>, God\u2019s word, the Scriptures: <\/span><\/span><\/em>great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect<\/span><\/span>.5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The serpent had nothing to do with this particular sign <\/i>(Genesis 2:16, 17 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n

Then the Lord God commanded the man, \u201cYou may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The serpent simply appropriated God’s instruction to give <\/i>Eve a false wonder<\/i>. The Greek word translated perform <\/i>in Jesus’ saying perform great signs and wonders <\/i>was not a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>. It was \u03b4\u1f7d\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>: to give<\/i>. The table below comparing God’s words to the serpent’s words highlights the subtlety, shrewdness, sagacity and craftiness of the serpent.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

I suppose it’s possible to think that the serpent was even more shrewd than this. The English translation of the Elpenor Septuagint renders it: Wherefore has God said, Eat not of every tree of the garden?<\/i> In any case the serpent asked Eve a question which seemed like an obvious misunderstanding, easy to correct or clarify. When she did so, the serpent’s reply was more direct.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Surely you will not die<\/i>, is almost too direct. It tips the serpent’s hand<\/a> too soon. But studying the Bible gives me potentially more knowledge than Eve had living in the moment. And the serpent’s directness coupled with the absence of any biblical evidence to the contrary persuades me that Eve never heard God’s words directly. So the serpent didn’t refute God as far as Eve knew, only his messenger, Adam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there a wife alive who doesn’t know that her husband is often confused and misunderstands the things she says? How much confidence does that inspire? Couldn’t Adam have misunderstood or miscommunicated God’s words? And that brings me to the serpent’s false wonder<\/i>: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The false wonder <\/i>was that Eve believed, not the word of God or his messenger (her husband) but, the serpent’s word. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive<\/i>…6<\/sup><\/a> The Greek word translated to deceive <\/i>here was \u03c0\u03bb\u03b1\u03bd\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b1\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto lead astray, cause to wander; to misguide, lead away from the right path; to mislead, deceive (someone)…origin of the English word ‘planet’ meaning wanderer because while the stars are fixed in place, the planets seemed to wander around the night sky.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

But I am afraid<\/i>, Paul wrote, that<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> just as the serpent deceived <\/i>(\u1f10\u03be\u03b7\u03c0\u1f71\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) Eve by his treachery<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b3\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>), your<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a> minds may be led astray <\/i>(\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u1fc7<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03c9<\/a>) from a sincere and pure devotion<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> to Christ<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a> His description of this false wonder sounds almost like seduction. And Adam was not deceived <\/i>(\u1f20\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>), but the woman, because she was fully deceived <\/i>(\u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03b1\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>), fell into transgression <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u1f71\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>).11<\/sup><\/a> In other words, Adam was not seduced, not by the serpent, and not by Eve to whatever extent she had become a false prophet<\/a><\/i> (\u03c8\u03b5\u03c5\u03b4\u03bf\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c8\u03b5\u03c5\u03b4\u03bf\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) of the serpent’s words. <\/span><\/p>\n

Adam heard God’s command with his own ears. Adam violated God’s command with his eyes wide open because violating God’s command is what Adam wanted to do (Romans 5:12-14 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned\u2014for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses<\/a> even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b2\u1f71\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b2\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the science fiction movie Blade Runner<\/a> replicants<\/i><\/a> were man-made humans used off-world as slaves, soldiers or sex-workers. Some were smarter, most were stronger, than natural-born human beings. All were created with four year lifespans. Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer<\/a>) returned to earth seeking an audience with his creator to gain a longer life for himself and his replicant <\/i>friends\/accomplices. His way was impeded by Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford<\/a>), a reluctant thug of a law enforcement officer called a blade runner, tasked with hunting down and killing Roy and his friends\/accomplices, the rebellious replicants <\/i>natural-born human beings now feared and outlawed. Deckard’s boss Bryant (M. Emmet Walsh<\/a>) put a fine point on his situation<\/a>: \u201cYou know the score, Pal. If you’re not cop, you’re little people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Replicants <\/i>were created as fully grown adults. In this Adam and Eve seem more like replicants <\/i>than their natural-born descendants. Replicants <\/i>were implanted with \u201cfalse memories to give them the years of experiences that humans take for granted, creating a ‘cushion or pillow for their emotions.’\u201d14<\/sup><\/a> It seems fitting somehow that human beings would give their creation \u201cfalse memories.\u201d It makes sense to me that God would give something similar but true to his creation. Though the text doesn’t say it, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that God taught Adam and Eve the content of Genesis 1 on that first Sabbath day. (If He went on to the content of Genesis 2, I need to reconsider Eve’s knowledge of God’s prohibition<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n
