Part 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I came across a YouTube video recently: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gDCCzzwy_Nk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Bible Passages That Caused Me to Lose My Faith<\/a>\u201d by Kristi Burke. It was short and to the point. Ms. Burke looked to be about my daughter&#8217;s age. My daughter won&#8217;t articulate her own <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Faith_deconstruction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deconstruction<\/a> experience around me. She will only state her preference for the witchcraft\/neopagan beliefs and community she espouses now. So, I clicked on the link. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It seems only fair to let Ms. Burke state her own purpose:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hi, guys, welcome back to my channel, where we deconstruct all of the things we were taught not to question growing up in evangelical, fundamentalist, conservative christian churches. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/25\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-8\/#_press\">similar<\/a> backgrounds. But I can&#8217;t honestly say that I was \u201ctaught not to question.\u201d Why didn&#8217;t I talk to anyone about what I was going through at the time?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> I thought I already knew what they would say. Might I have been pleasantly surprised? I don&#8217;t know. I didn&#8217;t talk to anyone. But nothing is ever quite as simple as what I was taught \u201cgrowing up in evangelical, fundamentalist, conservative christian churches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I had a home with parents and a brother and a sister. I went to school. I had friends (and enemies) at home, at school and at church. I played sports and had friends (and enemies) on various teams. And I knew more or less how to fit in in all of these different environments. The rub came sometime in what is now called my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/understanding-tweens-a-transformative-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tween years<\/a>, when I began to recognize that God didn&#8217;t create me to be a social chameleon, but one person made in his image in all of these different social environments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I had a few years of experience by then (which felt like a lifetime at the time) of how adult advice didn&#8217;t often pan out when navigating all the different social environments <i>they <\/i> had placed me in. I \u201cknew\u201d I had to figure it out pretty much on my own. And about that time I also became more self-conscious of my own free will: \u201cI want\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>). What did I want in all of it? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ms. Burke described her faith prior to encountering the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gDCCzzwy_Nk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 Bible Passages<\/a>\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I believed in a god who created all people, gave them free will and that he wanted all people to be saved but he couldn&#8217;t violate their free will to save them. And that it was the most loving thing he could do to give people freedom. And within that freedom they could either choose him and go to heaven or they could reject him and go to hell. And that would be entirely their choice.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/07\/25\/condemnation-or-judgment-part-8\/#_press\">my belief<\/a> except that Ms. Burke made no mention of Jesus or sin: <i>Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote Timothy. <i>I have not come to call the righteous<\/i>, Jesus said, <i>but sinners to repentance<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Granted, Ms. Burke&#8217;s purpose was not to present a true or even a credible gospel but to \u201cdeconstruct all of the things we were taught not to question growing up in evangelical, fundamentalist, conservative christian churches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m coming fresh from reviewing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/08\/18\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-9\/\">the story of Eve and the serpent<\/a>. Her free will led to an attempt to be like God <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/08\/18\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-9\/#_follow\">by following<\/a> the serpent&#8217;s advice. Could her free will have led her to reject the serpent&#8217;s advice once she <em>saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasing for the eyes to look at and it was beautiful to contemplate<\/em>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> I don&#8217;t think so. All of that desire seems to have determined what she wanted and therefore shaped her <em>free<\/em> will. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What did Jesus say about his own free will?<\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"TOP\">\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Matthew 26:39 (NET) <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">John 10:17, 18 (NET)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"TOP\">\n<td width=\"50%\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Going a little farther, [Jesus] threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, \u201cMy Father, if possible, let this cup <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/01\/aultery-in-the-prophets-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\">pass<\/a> from me! Yet not what I will (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>), but what you will.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is why the Father loves me\u2014because I lay down my life, so that I may take it back again. No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>). I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. This commandment I received from my Father.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While I have no particular <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/\">quarrel<\/a> with translating <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ap.html#ap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> <i>of my own free will<\/i>, I appreciate the precision of Scripture in Greek. Jesus did not use the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> here. His own will, what He wanted, was not to die a torturous death. And his <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ema.html#emautou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bc\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> (NET: <i>my own free will<\/i>) was an <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/12\/who-am-i-part-11\/#_freewill\">authority<\/a> <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exo.html#exousia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <i>received <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ela.html#elabon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/la.html#lambanw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) by <i>commandment <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entolhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entolh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03ae<\/a>) from God his Father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The writer of Hebrews described Jesus&#8217; purpose in the world (Hebrews 10:4-7 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. So when <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+9:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christ<\/a>]<\/em> came into the world, he said,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/13\/atonement-part-6\/#_body\">body<\/a> you prepared for me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you took no delight in.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Then I said, \u2018Here I am: I have come\u2014it is written of me in the scroll of the book\u2014to do your will <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, O God.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> is the noun form of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>. Those who believe that salvation is a choice made by a sinner&#8217;s free will tend to make the Gospel something that they think might appeal to a sinner&#8217;s free will: going to heaven rather than to hell, <i>heaven <\/i>being a euphemism here for <em>not-hell<\/em>. The pitch relies on the implication that <i>heaven <\/i>is where one gets what one wants (<em>i.e.<\/em>, one&#8217;s own free will). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus taught us to pray (Matthew 5:10 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8230;may your kingdom come, may your will <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>)<\/em> be done on earth as it is in heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The implication here is that God&#8217;s will is done in heaven. How much would a sinner striving faithfully to pursue a sinner&#8217;s free will care for Jesus&#8217; <i>heaven<\/i>? Jesus said to Nicodemus (John 3:3 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_above\">from above<\/a>, he cannot see the kingdom of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/25\/romans-part-2\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek word translated <i>see <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/id.html#idein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f30\u03b4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eid.html#eidw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>). It was the same root word Nicodemus used when he said (John 3:2 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Rabbi, we know <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/oi.html#oidamen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f34\u03b4\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9)<\/em> that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs that you do unless God is with him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In other words, Jesus didn&#8217;t threaten Nicodemus with eternal damnation, but commended his partial insight. It helps one to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+3:10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why<\/a> He was so surprised that Nicodemus didn&#8217;t actually understand one of these <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+3:12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>earthly things<\/i><\/a> (John 3:6, 7 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not all free will (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) is <i>born of the flesh<\/i>. Jesus said (John 15:7 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If you remain in me and my words remain in you, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote15sym\">ask<\/a> whatever you want <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9)<\/em>, and it will be done for you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table14\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here, I would assume that as you remain in Jesus and his words remain in you, <i>whatever you want <\/i>is <i>born of the Spirit<\/i>. The Greek words translated <i>whatever<\/i> were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f43<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#ean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>. So how did Jesus&#8217; Gospel presentation differ (Matthew 11:28-30 NET)?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me because I am <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn28\">gentle<\/a> and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It doesn&#8217;t really matter if people are <i>weary <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kop.html#kopiwntes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kop.html#kopiaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03b9\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) <i>and burdened <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pef.html#pefortismenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fortizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03c1\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) by their lives lived in sin\u2014<i>foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to various passions and desires, spending <\/i>[their] <i>lives in evil and envy, hateful and hating one another<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u2014or from their attempts to make themselves righteous by obeying rules. While the invitation is sincere, Jesus also said (John 6:44, 45 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/07\/17\/funeral-part-2\/#_ftn32\">and I<\/a> will raise him up <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/07\/17\/funeral-part-2\/#_ftn33\">at<\/a> the last day <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/31\/he-takes-away-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. It is written in the prophets, \u2018And they will all be taught <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn20\">by<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/04\/29\/the-book-of-life-part-1\/#_Tablea\">God<\/a>.\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn21\">Everyone<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn22\">hears<\/a> and learns from the Father comes <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn23\">to me<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are not as contradictory as they seem in English. The Greek word translated <i>come <\/i>in the phrase <i>come to me <\/i>was the adverb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/deu.html#deute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, and in the phrase <i>no one can come to me <\/i>it was the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/elq.html#elqein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ercomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>). Anyone who believes that salvation is the result of a sinner&#8217;s free will is unlikely to believe that <i>they will all be taught by God <\/i>effectually, but Jesus also said (John 12:31, 32 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Disbelieving Him adversely impacts one&#8217;s knowledge of God, but doesn&#8217;t change his mind, no matter how many people refuse to take Him at his word: <i>Let God be proven true, and every human being shown up as a liar<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> Paul wrote in response to his own rhetorical question: <i>If some were unfaithful, their unfaithfulness will not nullify God\u2019s faithfulness, will it?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With that as background I&#8217;ll turn to Ms. Burke&#8217;s first Bible passage: \u201cRomans 9, which was the starting point of my deconstruction journey,\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> she said. <a id=\"_context\"><\/a>Though she began in verse 16, I&#8217;ll start at the beginning of the chapter to gain some context (Romans 9:1-6a NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I am telling the truth in Christ (I am not lying!), for my conscience assures me in the Holy Spirit\u2014I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote12sym\">I could wish<\/a> that I myself were accursed\u2014cut off from Christ\u2014for the sake of my people, my fellow countrymen <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever! Amen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It is not as though the word of God had failed.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here was the perfect opportunity for Paul to explain how God \u201cgave them free will and that he wanted all people to be saved but he couldn&#8217;t violate their free will to save them. And that it was the most loving thing he could do to give people freedom. And within that freedom they could either choose him and go to heaven or they could reject him and go to hell. And that would be entirely their choice.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_belong\"><\/a>Instead, Paul wrote (Romans 9:6b, 7 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel, nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants; rather \u201cthrough Isaac will your descendants be counted\u201d <em>[See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/31\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-4\/#_Tableb\">Greek Table Comparison<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit<\/i>, Jesus said. <i>Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above.\u2019<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> And Paul began here to explain the implications of that difference, contrasting <i>the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+15:50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children of the flesh<\/a> <\/i>to <i>the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+1:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">children of God<\/a><\/i> or <i>the children of promise <\/i>(Romans 9:8-13 NET). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This means it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.
