The first Hebrew word in this word string was \u05d4\u05b2\u05dc\u05b9\u05a3\u05d0<\/a><\/span> (l\u014d’<\/i>). It was translated Is not <\/i>in the Tanakh, KJV and NET. It was followed by \u05d9\u0596\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05bd\u05ea\u05b0\u05da\u05b8<\/a><\/span> (yir’\u00e2<\/i>), which was translated thy fear <\/i>in the Tanakh and KJV, and your piety <\/i>in the NET. The translators of the Tanakh and KJV added this <\/i>as well. The translators of the NET did not. The Septuagint corroborates the two words in the Masoretic text with many more: \u03c0\u1f79\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03bf\u1f50\u03c7<\/a> \u1f41<\/a> \u03c6\u1f79\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u1f7b<\/a> \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>; Is your fear not <\/i>(NETS), Is not thy fear <\/i>(English Elpenor). <\/span><\/p>\n

A note (17<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

The word <\/span>\u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4 <\/span><\/span>(yir\u02beah, \u201cfear\u201d) in this passage refers to Job\u2019s fear of the Lord, his reverential devotion to God. H. H. Rowley (Job [NCBC], 46) says that on the lips of Eliphaz the word almost means \u201cyour religion.\u201d He refers to Moffatt\u2019s translation, \u201cLet your religion reassure you.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The next Hebrew word in this word string was \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u0591\u05da\u05b8<\/a><\/span> (kisl\u00e2<\/i>). It was translated thy confidence<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV) and your confidence <\/i>(NET). But the rabbis who translated the Septuagint chose \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1f00\u03c6\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u1fc3<\/a>; based on a lack of sense <\/i>(NETS), [founded] in folly <\/i>(English Elpenor). Forms of \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (kisl\u00e2<\/i>) can mean confidence<\/i>, folly <\/i>or stupidity<\/i>. But here, too, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint diverged from the English translation of the Masoretic text. Was \u05dc\u05b0\u05db\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05bd\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (kisl\u00e2<\/i>) the word they found in the Hebrew text they translated? Or perhaps more to the point, was the negative particle \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05dc<\/a><\/span> (‘al<\/i>), translated but let<\/i>…not <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV) or Yet<\/i>…must not <\/i>(NET), in the text they translated? Or was it added later? I won’t spend any more time on it here. <\/span><\/p>\n

The note (18<\/a>) on Job 4:6 in the NET reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

The word \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05ea\u05b6\u05da\u05b8 <\/span><\/span>(kislatekha, \u201cyour confidence\u201d) is rendered in the LXX by \u201cfounded in folly.\u201d The word \u05db\u05bc\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05dc <\/span><\/span>(kesel) is \u201cconfidence\u201d (see 8:14) and elsewhere \u201cfolly.\u201d Since it is parallel to \u201cyour hope\u201d it must mean confidence here.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Both the word <\/span>\u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (kisl\u00e2<\/i>) and the disparity in its translation between the Septuagint and the English translators of the Masoretic text remind me of the Lord’s word through Ezekiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Though Eliphaz had probably never heard Ezekiel the rabbis who translated the Septuagint certainly had. I wonder if they didn’t hear Eliphaz’s reasoning as something like: Job is suffering, therefore Job sinned; apart from repentance Job’s fear of the Lord is folly because Job’s former righteousness will not save him from his present sinfulness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next word in the Hebrew word string of Job 4:6 in the Masoretic text was \u05ea\u05bc\u059c\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05d5\u05b8\u05bd\u05ea\u05b0\u05da\u05b8\u0597<\/a><\/span> (tiqv\u00e2<\/i>). It was translated thy hope<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV) and your hope <\/i>(NET). It was rendered \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f77\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> in the Septuagint, so too your hope<\/i> (NETS), thy hope also <\/i>(English Elpenor).<\/span><\/p>\n

This was followed by \u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b9\u05a3\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (t\u014dm<\/i>), which was translated and the uprightness <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV) or and your blameless <\/i>(NET). In the Septuagint it was \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> (BLB), and the innocence <\/i>(NETS), or \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> (Elpenor), and the mischief<\/i> (English Elpenor). The occurrence of \u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> (NETS: innocence<\/i>) in the BLB tends to corroborate \u05d5\u05b0\u05ea\u05b9\u05a3\u05dd<\/a><\/span> (t\u014dm<\/i>) in the Masoretic text.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what happened in the Elpenor version of the Septuagint? Was it a copyist error, dropping the initial \u1f00, changing \u1f00\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> to \u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>? It could be. I’m also beginning to wonder if the translators of the Elpenor version simply chose to expose Eliphaz’s sarcasm, to make his accusation more explicit for the Greek reader.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final Hebrew word in the word string that is Job 4:6 in the Masoretic text was \u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05bd\u05d9\u05da\u05b8<\/a><\/span> (dere\u1e35<\/i>). It was translated of thy ways<\/i> (Tanakh, KJV) and ways <\/i>(NET). In the Septuagint it was \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f41\u03b4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, of your way <\/i>(NETS) and of thy way<\/i> (English Elpenor). Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity of your ways your hope?<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> is how I first read it. A note (19<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

Eliphaz is not being sarcastic to Job. He knows that Job is a God-fearing man who lives out his faith in life. But he also knows that Job should apply to himself the same things he tells others.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is more or less how I heard Eliphaz when I read an English translation of the Masoretic text only. David conveyed a similar concept regarding \u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05b0\u05ea\u05bb\u05de\u05bc\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9<\/a><\/span> (t\u014dm<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

This comes closest to explaining how Job’s blameless ways <\/i>might be his hope<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a> <\/a>Still, I can’t help wondering if modern translators haven’t reached too far to bolster Eliphaz’s integrity<\/i>, guilelessness <\/i>and innocence<\/i>, especially if you have spoken nothing true in my presence<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> is the more reliable<\/a> understanding of the Lord’s critique of Eliphaz’s words. At any rate, if one thinks Eliphaz was sincere rather than sarcastic, one is more likely to hear what follows as a banal or ill-timed restatement of principle rather than a barely veiled accusation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
