\u201cWhy have you done this and let the boys live?\u201d<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> the king of Egypt accused the midwives.\u00a0 Hebrew women are vigorous<\/i>, they answered, they give birth before the midwife gets to them!<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, \u201cAll sons that are born you must throw into the river, but all daughters you may let live.\u201d<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Moses\u2019 mother disobeyed the law.\u00a0 She hid her baby for three months.\u00a0 Then she set him adrift in a papyrus basket, where Pharaoh\u2019s daughter found him and raised him as her own.<\/p>\n

In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and observed their hard labor, and he saw an Egyptian man attacking a Hebrew man, one of his own people. \u00a0He looked this way and that and saw that no one was there, and then he attacked the Egyptian and concealed the body in the sand<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he saw two Hebrew men fighting.\u00a0 When he tried to break it up one of them said, \u201cWho made you a ruler and a judge over us?\u00a0 Are you planning to kill me like you killed that Egyptian?\u201d\u00a0 Then Moses was afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0<\/a>), thinking, \u201cSurely what I did has become known.\u201d<\/i>5<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> chose \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) here.\u00a0 There are no more occurrences of \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> in the New Testament.\u00a0 By choosing this word however they have made Moses\u2019 fear equivalent to Sarah\u2019s fear<\/a> when she lied to God about laughing at him.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was like Lot\u2019s fear<\/a> to live in Zoar after witnessing the destruction of the surrounding cities,7<\/sup><\/a> and Isaac\u2019s fear<\/a> to acknowledge Rebekah as his wife.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was like Jacob\u2019s fear<\/a> of Bethel the morning after his dream,9<\/sup><\/a> and when he heard that Esau was coming out to meet him<\/a> on his return to Canaan.10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When Pharaoh heard<\/i> [what Moses did to the Egyptian], he sought to kill Moses. \u00a0So Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian\u2026<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0During that long period of time the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites groaned because of the slave labor. \u00a0They cried out, and their desperate cry because of their slave labor went up to God<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And God responded (Exodus 3:1-5 NET).<\/p>\n

Now Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. \u00a0The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. \u00a0He looked \u2013 and the bush was ablaze with fire, but it was not being consumed! \u00a0So Moses thought, \u201cI will turn aside to see this amazing sight. \u00a0Why does the bush not burn up?\u201d \u00a0When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to look, God called to him from within the bush and said, \u201cMoses, Moses!\u201d \u00a0And Moses said, \u201cHere I am.\u201d \u00a0God said, \u201cDo not approach any closer! \u00a0Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

God\u00a0added, \u201cI am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.\u201d Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0<\/a>) to look at God<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the Septuagint<\/a> \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> (a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) was used.\u00a0 It does not occur in the New Testament but is close to \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>, translated reverent regard<\/i> in Hebrews: By faith Noah, when he was warned about things not yet seen, with reverent regard<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>, a participle of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family.\u00a0 Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith<\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Lord said<\/i> [to Moses], \u201cI have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. \u00a0I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. \u00a0I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and spacious, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. \u00a0And now indeed the cry of the Israelites has come to me, and I have also seen how severely the Egyptians oppress them. \u00a0So now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.\u201d<\/i>15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I think the rabbis who translated the Septuagint were wise to choose \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a> [Addendum 1\/30\/2026: The word in the Septuagint in Exodus 3:6 was actually \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> in the present tense.] (a form of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) here rather than \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, a word that connotes flight.\u00a0 The NET online definition<\/a> of \u03b5\u1f50\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2 is a continuum from caution<\/i> through wariness<\/i> to reverence<\/i>. \u00a0For Moses was not afraid to stand and argue with God:\u00a0 \u201cWho am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, or that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?\u201d<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0And his question prompted a couple of my own about the timing of God\u2019s calling.\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t it have been better to call a prince of Egypt for this diplomatic mission than a shepherd from Midian?\u00a0\u00a0 And certainly the moralist in me would prefer that God had called Moses before he became a murderer and a fugitive from justice.<\/p>\n

To address my first question I turned to Paul:\u00a0 For it is written,<\/i> \u201cI will destroy the wisdom of the wise<\/i><\/b>, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent<\/b><\/i>.\u201d17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul quoted the prophetic word of God through Isaiah as a clear statement of God\u2019s purpose and intent.\u00a0 This is like an overarching theme<\/a> with God.\u00a0 Then Paul elaborated (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NET):<\/p>\n

Think about the circumstances of your call (\u03ba\u03bb\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bb\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), <\/em>brothers and sisters. \u00a0Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. \u00a0But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. \u00a0God chose what is low and despised in the world<\/a>, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, so that no one can boast in his<\/a> presence [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<\/em>He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, \u201cLet the one who boasts, boast in the Lord<\/i><\/b>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Given my upbringing and temperament it probably bears saying that Paul did not invent rules for God to obey.\u00a0 He revealed what he heard from Christ or observed of God\u2019s behavior in Scripture.\u00a0 David was the youngest of Jesse\u2019s sons (and a shepherd, by the way), not the eldest.\u00a0 Jephthah was the illegitimate son of Gilead and a prostitute<\/a>.\u00a0 Solomon was apparently not the eldest of David\u2019s sons with Bathsheba,18<\/sup><\/a> and David\u2019s and Bathsheba\u2019s relationship began as an adulterous affair, yet God called Solomon Jedidiah<\/a>, beloved of the Lord.<\/p>\n

As for Moses being a murderer and a fugitive from justice it is clear that God was working at (what I would call) cross-purposes.\u00a0 If God sent me to gain the Israelites release from Pharaoh I would hope, and even prayer, that He would grant me favor with Pharaoh.\u00a0 He told Moses, So now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.<\/i>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It occurred to me years ago that one way God might have hardened Pharaoh\u2019s heart was to grant him wealth, position, power and prestige without first humbling him to serve God.\u00a0 As I imagine the scene now I see Moses, a murderer and fugitive from Egyptian justice, standing before the king of Egypt, saying, The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. \u00a0So now, let us go three days\u2019 journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It was almost guaranteed that his heart would be hardened against such a request from such a man.\u00a0 And if Egyptian justice had become forgetful of Moses\u2019 crime as a prince in Egypt, Moses had become a Midianite shepherd.\u00a0 Again Pharaoh\u2019s heart was likely to be hardened, for everyone who takes care of sheep is disgusting<\/i> (KJV, an abomination<\/i>) to the Egyptians<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I am in the heart now of the issues that Paul considered important when discussing election<\/a>:\u00a0 So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a> <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0For the scripture says to Pharaoh: <\/i>\u201cFor this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you<\/i><\/b>, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth<\/b><\/i>.\u201d \u00a0So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

What was God\u2019s response to Moses\u2019 objection?\u00a0 Surely I will be with you<\/i> [literally, I AM with you], and this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you bring the people out of Egypt, you and they will serve God on this mountain<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God opposes the proud<\/i><\/b>, but he gives grace to the humble<\/b><\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a> both James and Peter quoted from the Proverbs of Solomon.<\/p>\n

Anyone called to the salvation of righteousness in Jesus Christ might feel just like Moses.\u00a0 Who am I to love<\/i> [my] enemy<\/a> and pray for those<\/a> who persecute<\/i> [me] [Table<\/a>], so that<\/i> [I] may be like<\/i> [my] Father in heaven<\/a><\/i> [Table<\/a>]?26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Who am I to Rejoice and be glad<\/i>27<\/sup><\/a> when people insult<\/i> [me] and persecute<\/i> [me] and say all kinds of evil things<\/a> about<\/i> [me] falsely on account of<\/i> [You]?28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019m not one of the prophets.\u00a0 Like Peter I might say, \u201cGo away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!\u201d<\/i>29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But as He promised Moses, I AM with you, so He does not intend that I do righteousness on my own, but tapped into that infinite daily living stream of his Holy Spirit, relying on his love<\/i>, his joy<\/i>, his peace<\/i>, his patience<\/i>, his kindness<\/i>, his goodness<\/i>, his faithfulness<\/i>, his \u00a0gentleness<\/a><\/i>, and<\/i> his self-control<\/i>. \u00a0Against such things there is no law<\/i> [Table<\/a>].30<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
