The translators of the New American Bible1<\/sup><\/a> chose the marriage is unlawful<\/em> for \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in Matthew 5:32 [Table<\/a>].\u00a0 So I will substitute that translation in the NET:<\/p>\n

But I say to you that everyone<\/a> who divorces his wife, except for the marriage is unlawful<\/em>, makes her commit adultery<\/a>, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are offenses listed in Leviticus 18:6-18 that don\u2019t have a corresponding punishment in Leviticus 20:11-21.\u00a0 Also there are punishments for offenses in Leviticus 20:11-21 that are not mentioned in Leviticus 18:6-18.\u00a0 They do appear just outside that arbitrary limit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman; it is a detestable act.<\/p>\n

Leviticus 18:22 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

If a man has sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman, the two of them have committed an abomination. \u00a0They must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.<\/p>\n

Both lists combined still comprise a finite set of twelve dimensions.\u00a0 That addresses my primary discomfort relative to the open-ended translation of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 as immorality<\/em><\/a> in the NET. \u00a0One would think I would be happier than I feel about it.\u00a0 I want to revisit Matthew 5:32 (NET) and 19:9 (NET) with X <\/em>= porneia<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The structure seems to imply that 1) divorce is forbidden, 2) remarriage is adultery, 3) except for \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.\u00a0 I took Matthew 5:32 to be saying that if the husband who divorced his wife was guilty of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1, Jesus would not consider the divorced wife an adulteress when she remarried, nor hold her new husband guilty of committing adultery.\u00a0 In Matthew 19:9 I assumed that the divorced wife was guilty of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 and that Jesus would not hold the divorced husband liable for adultery if he remarried.<\/p>\n

Is there an implicit permission to divorce a wife guilty of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 in Matthew 19:9?\u00a0 It may appear so out of context.\u00a0\u00a0 But if I bear in mind that Jesus\u2019 original answer to the Pharisees\u2019 question\u2014Is it lawful <\/em>(\u1f14\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd, a form of\u00a0\u1f14\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>) to divorce a wife for any cause?<\/em>\u2014was an emphatic no<\/em><\/a>, that apparent permissiveness recedes into the background. \u00a0But here\u2019s what happens if I substitute the marriage is unlawful<\/em> (where the marriage is unlawful<\/em> = the sets Leviticus 20:11-21 and Leviticus 18:6-18, 19, 22, 23) for X <\/em>= porneia<\/em> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Now both the divorced husband and his wife are guilty of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 [e.g., their marriage was unlawful], and both are free of the charge of adultery if remarried.\u00a0 And divorce in these cases, rather than being forbidden, is obligatory?\u00a0 And I was entertaining the idea that this was a better translation of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1 than immorality<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Though the New American Bible translators were consistent in their translation of Matthew 5:32<\/a>, 19:9<\/a>; Acts 15:20, 29<\/a>, and 21:25<\/a>, they reverted to immorality<\/em> in 1 Corinthians 5:1<\/a> as opposed to unlawful marriage<\/em> for \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.\u00a0 This is the one place where Paul may actually have referred to the law in Leviticus 18:8<\/a> and 20:11<\/a>, and called it \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.<\/p>\n

It is widely reported that\u00a0there is\u00a0immorality (<\/em>\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em>\u00a0among you, and immorality (\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1)<\/em> of a kind not found2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>even among pagans –\u00a0a man living\u00a0with his father\u2019s wife.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Still, there is an incident in the Old Testament (Ezra 9<\/a>, 10<\/a>) where divorce was utilized as the remedy for another kind of unlawful marriage<\/em> (Ezra 9:1, 2 NET):<\/p>\n

The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residents who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. \u00a0Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has become intermingled with the local residents.\u00a0 Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
