There are 3 occurrences<\/a> of \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in 1 Corinthians [see Table<\/a> below] the Greek word translated all people <\/i>in: And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people <\/i>(\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2, a form of \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>) to myself.<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> This is a continuation of my consideration of the first (1 Corinthians 7:7 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

I wish<\/a> that all (\u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> were as I myself am. But<\/a> each has his own gift from God, one<\/a> of one kind and one<\/a> of another [Table<\/a>]. <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I think everyone <\/i>(NET<\/a>) is a good translation of \u03c0\u03ac\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b8\u03c1\u1f7d\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> above, despite \u201cPaul\u2019s assumptions [in 1 Corinthians 7:32-34<\/a>] about the beautiful preoccupations of an unmarried man <\/i>and an unmarried or betrothed woman<\/i>\u201d2<\/sup><\/a> limited to \u201cthose who were born…of the flesh of Adam\u201d and born \u201cfrom above<\/a><\/i>…by the Spirit<\/a>.\u201d3<\/sup><\/a> Here I want to explore the beauty of the story of Abraham, Sarah and Abimelech<\/a> more thoroughly. It began when Abram and Sarai journeyed to Egypt. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I am harder on Abram\/Abraham about this fear than I should be. I’ve never lived in a world where anyone thought to kill me before having sex with my girlfriends or wives. Only God’s care makes Abram’s fear seem foolish. I’ve certainly feared matters of much less import when I should have trusted Him. And Abram’s fear\u2014should the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’, and they will kill me, but you they will keep for themselves<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a>\u2014sounds very much like a rationalization of the religious mind<\/a><\/i> among those who have some compunction about sex with another man’s wife.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word <\/span>\u05d9\u05b8\u05e4\u05b8\u05a5\u05d4<\/a><\/span> (y\u0101p\u0304\u00ea<\/i>), fair <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV), beautiful <\/i>(NET), was translated \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f74<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>, in the Septuagint. I want to review what happened after Abimelech took Sarah to contrast that beauty to the story of Pharaoh and Sarai. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The implication is strong that Pharoah had<\/i>…come near<\/i> (q\u0101ra\u1e07<\/i>, <\/span>\u05e7\u05b8\u05e8\u05b7\u0596\u05d1<\/a><\/span>) her <\/i>(Tanakh), he had<\/i>…touched<\/i> (\u1f25\u03c8\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>) her <\/i>(NETS, English Elpenor). Is that why God appeared to Abimelech in a dream at night<\/i>,5<\/sup><\/a> but struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases<\/i>?6<\/sup><\/a> Well, maybe, since the law, which came <\/i>[more than] 430 years afterward<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> said, \u201cYou shall not commit adultery<\/i>\u201d8<\/sup><\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n

The suggestion here, that Sarai would or should \u201cbe repugnant\u201d to Abram if she told the angel to strike after<\/i> Pharaoh \u201ctouched\u201d her, implies that Rashi intended before <\/i>Pharaoh \u201ctouched\u201d her. I was a little surprised that many if not most commentators<\/a> seemed to hold that the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> before Pharaoh \u201ctouched\u201d Sarai. It was also the hope or expectation of most people I found online.13<\/sup><\/a> It would’ve been my own preference. That’s why I’m pursuing the question.<\/span><\/p>\n

It just seems to me now that the contrast between the two stories implies that Pharaoh \u201ctouched\u201d Sarai. I’ll back off from my \u201ccertainty.\u201d The text doesn’t explicitly say that Pharaoh \u201ctouched\u201d Sarai any more than it says that Sarai \u201cwould say to the angel, ‘Strike,’ and he would strike.\u201d The same phrase <\/span>\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc\u05be\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05a5\u05e8<\/span>, made up of two words <\/span>\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc<\/a><\/span> (\u02bfal<\/i>) and <\/span>\u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05a5\u05e8<\/a><\/span> (d\u0101\u1e07\u0101r<\/i>), is found in Genesis 20:11. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here that two word phrase was translated for<\/i>…sake<\/i> (Tanakh) and because of <\/i>(NET). A note (28<\/a>) in the NET reads: \u201cHeb ‘over the matter of.’\u201d That seems to be the most reasonable understanding of the phrase in Genesis 12:17. The story of Sarai calling on an angel to defend her virtue would have been a good one to tell, if it actually happened. It sounds a little too much like the chivalric code<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

The code of chivalry that developed in medieval Europe had its roots in earlier centuries. It arose in the Carolingian Empire from the idealisation of the cavalryman\u2014involving military bravery, individual training, and service to others\u2014especially in Francia, among horse soldiers in Charlemagne’s cavalry.[4<\/a>]:\u200a2\u200a[5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> <\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s not too hard to imagine that a medieval French rabbi<\/a>, learning and teaching at a time when these ideals of justice and virtue were percolating, thought that God would put his knight at the fair lady Sarai’s disposal. I’m a little distressed how unchivalrous Abram seems 918 years after Rashi died. This is how Abraham explained it to Abimelech:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew word <\/span>\u05d7\u05b7\u05e1\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b5\u0594\u05da\u05b0<\/a><\/span> (\u1e25ese\u1e0f<\/i>), translated kindness <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and loyalty <\/i>(NET), was rendered \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> (righteousness<\/i>) by the rabbis who translated the Septuagint. So, rather than cavil at Abraham’s apparent lack of medieval European moral sensibilities, I should marvel at how far Sarai\/Sarah was willing to go to obey her husband, her owner<\/a>, her lord<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Without speaking a word against Abraham, Peter drew a sharp contrast quietly commending Sarah as one who did good and <\/i>[did] not fear anything that is frightening<\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a> And the Lord didn’t need to constantly critique and criticize Abraham as I am prone to do, since He had already given him a wife who demonstrated such faithful, patient obedience without fear, that he may be won<\/em>15<\/sup><\/a> without a word by the conduct of<\/em>16<\/sup><\/a> his wife. <\/span><\/p>\n
