For I do not want you to be ignorant<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) of this mystery<\/i> (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), brothers and sisters<\/i>, Paul continued, so that you may not be conceited<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; [\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf<\/a>] \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>)\u20261<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The Greek word \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, translated ignorant<\/i> above, was translated unaware<\/i> in Paul\u2019s revelation of that affliction<\/a> which was so integral a part of, if not the impetus for, the understanding that became his letter to the Romans:\u00a0 For we do not want you to be unaware<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>), brothers and sisters, regarding the affliction that happened to us<\/a> in the province of Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) in ourselves but in God who raises the dead<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The word \u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, translated trust<\/i> above, leads back to Paul\u2019s point in Romans (as articulated in his letter to Philippi): Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of those who mutilate the flesh! \u00a0For we are the circumcision, the ones who worship by the Spirit of God<\/a>, exult in Christ Jesus, and do not rely<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) on human credentials<\/i> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>)\u20263<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To translate \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a> as human credentials<\/i> obscures more than it illuminates.<\/p>\n

The note (6<\/a>) in the NET admits that the Greek reads, \u201chave no confidence in the flesh\u201d as it is translated in the NKJV<\/a>.\u00a0 Still, it seems to me that the most natural reading of \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a> \u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> would be \u201cand not by flesh persuaded\u201d or \u201cand not by persuasion of flesh.\u201d\u00a0 Paul was not concerned with human credentials, nor even an idolatry of self-worship, a confidence in the flesh, so much as the delusion of human flesh that righteousness comes by human efforts<\/a> to keep God\u2019s laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If someone thinks he has good reasons to put confidence<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) in human credentials<\/i> (\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ac\u03c1\u03be<\/a>), Paul continued, I have more: \u00a0I was circumcised on the eighth day, from the people of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews. \u00a0I lived according to the law as a Pharisee. \u00a0In my zeal for God<\/a> I persecuted the church. \u00a0According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0But<\/a> these assets I have come to regard as liabilities because of Christ <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0More than that<\/a>, I now regard all things as liabilities compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things \u2013 indeed, I regard them as dung<\/a>! \u2013 that I may gain Christ <\/i>[Table<\/a>], and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God<\/a> that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

For I do not want you to be ignorant<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) of this mystery<\/i> (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), brothers and sisters<\/i>, Paul wrote in Romans.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s mystery<\/i> (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) was Jesus\u2019 secret<\/i> when He told his disciples, The secret<\/i> (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) of the kingdom of God has been given<\/i>5<\/sup><\/a> to you.\u00a0 But to those outside, everything is in parables<\/a> <\/i>[Table<\/a>], so that<\/i> although they look they may look but not see, and although they hear they may hear but not understand, so they may not repent and be forgiven<\/a><\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/i> [Table<\/a>].6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Israel failed to obtain what<\/a> it was diligently seeking<\/i>, Paul had written earlier, but the elect obtained it.\u00a0 The rest were hardened <\/i>[Table<\/a>], as it is written,<\/i> \u201cGod gave them a spirit of stupor<\/a><\/i><\/b>, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear<\/b>, to this very day.\u201d<\/b><\/i>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

And Jesus was actively involved in fulfilling His Father\u2019s will.<\/p>\n

Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in<\/a> Christ [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we may be holy and unblemished in his sight in love. \u00a0He did this by predestining us to adoption as his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure of his will \u2013 to the praise of the glory of his grace that<\/a> he has freely bestowed on us in his dearly loved Son [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches<\/a> of his grace [Table<\/a>]<\/em> that he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight. \u00a0He did this when he revealed to us the secret (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, toward the administration of the fullness of the times, to head up all things in Christ \u2013 the things in<\/a> heaven and the things on earth. \u00a0In Christ<\/a> we too have been claimed as God\u2019s own possession, since we were predestined according to the one purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, would be to the praise of his<\/a> glory [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And when you heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation) \u2013 when you believed in Christ \u2013 you were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit<\/a>, who<\/a> is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of God\u2019s own possession, to the praise of his glory [Table<\/a>].8<\/sup><\/a>

For I do not want you to be ignorant<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03bd\u03bf\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) of this mystery<\/i> (\u03bc\u03c5\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>), brothers and sisters<\/i>, Paul wrote, so that you may not be conceited<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; [\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf<\/a>] \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>).\u00a0 The idiom \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> translated conceited<\/i> is literally from<\/i> or by themselves wise<\/i>.\u00a0 It is similar to \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> \u1f66\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03c6\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> (literally so that not be persuaded to be<\/i> or to exist upon ourselves<\/i>) from: Indeed we felt as if the sentence of death had been passed against us, so that we would not trust <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u03cc\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) in ourselves but in God who raises the dead<\/i>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Later in Romans Paul wrote, Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly.\u00a0 Do not be conceited<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a>). \u00a0Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Paul had tended to use \u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> (a form of\u00a0\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>;\u00a0wise<\/i>) in this form in a sarcastic or even mocking manner:\u00a0 We are fools for Christ, but you are wise<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>) in Christ!\u00a0 We are weak, but you are strong!\u00a0 You are distinguished, we are dishonored!<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <\/i>And, For since you are so wise<\/i> (\u03c6\u03c1\u03cc\u03bd\u03b9\u03bc\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>), you put up with fools gladly<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul didn\u2019t want us to be wise from or by ourselves any more than he wanted us to be persuaded to be or to exist upon ourselves.\u00a0 And so what was this mystery or secret Paul didn\u2019t want us to be ignorant or unaware of?<\/p>\n

<\/a>A partial hardening has happened to Israel until<\/a> the full<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) number of the Gentiles has come in<\/i>\u00a0(\u03b5\u1f30\u03c3\u03ad\u03bb\u03b8\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f30\u03c3\u03ad\u03c1\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) [Table<\/a>]<\/i>.\u00a0 And so all Israel will be saved<\/i> [Table<\/a>]\u202613<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Did Paul mean all Israel<\/i> as in all who are descended from Israel? \u00a0Or did he rename all descended from Israel who believe and all Gentiles who believe all Israel<\/i>?<\/p>\n

For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel<\/i>, Paul wrote earlier, nor are all the children Abraham\u2019s true descendants; rather<\/i> \u201cthrough Isaac will your descendants be counted<\/i><\/b>.\u201d14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This seemed like a strong argument that all Israel<\/i> cannot mean \u201call who are descended from Israel,\u201d until I put the verse back in context.\u00a0 This means<\/i>, Paul continued, it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So what promise did Paul have in mind when he wrote, And so all Israel will be saved <\/i>(Romans 11:26, 27 NET)?<\/p>\n

And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: \u201cThe Deliverer will come out of Zion; he<\/a> will remove ungodliness from Jacob<\/b> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0And this is my covenant with them<\/b>, when I take away their sins.\u201d<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Deliverer will remove ungodliness<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) from Jacob<\/i>.\u00a0 This ungodliness<\/i> brought God\u2019s wrath in the first place:\u00a0 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness<\/i>\u202616<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Today the quotation from Isaiah reads, A protector comes to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds<\/i>,17<\/sup><\/a> when translated from a contemporary understanding of Hebrew.\u00a0 But the rabbis who translated the Septuagint into Greek about two centuries before the Lord Jesus was rejected as Messiah translated it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The phrase when I take away their sins<\/i> is not part of the quotation from Isaiah 59:20, 21.\u00a0 I think Paul interjected it to cue us as to which covenant he had in mind, namely, the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:33-35 NET).<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land,\u201d says the Lord. \u00a0\u201cI will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. \u00a0I will be their God and they will be my people [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0People will no longer need to teach their neighbors and relatives to know me.\u00a0 \u00a0For all of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me,\u201d says the Lord. \u00a0\u201cFor I will forgive their sin and will no longer call to mind the wrong they have done\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 The Lord has made a promise to Israel.\u00a0 He promises it as the one who fixed the sun to give light by day and the moon and stars to give light by night.\u00a0 He promises it as the one who stirs up the sea so that its waves roll.\u00a0 He promises it as the one who is known as the Lord who rules over all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I will not reject all the descendants of Israel because of all that they have done<\/i>,18<\/sup><\/a> the Lord promised.\u00a0 In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers<\/i>,19<\/sup><\/a> Paul concluded.\u00a0 And I think he meant all<\/i> the descendants of Israel.<\/p>\n

Addendum\u00a0<\/strong>(7\/7\/2015): Jim Searcy<\/a> has published that the Septuagint is a hoax<\/a> written by Origen<\/a> and Eusebius<\/a> 200 hundred years after Christ.\u00a0 \u201cIn fact, the Septuagint \u2018quotes\u2019 from the New Testament and not vice versa\u2026\u201d\u00a0 His contention is that the \u201cKing James Version is the infallible Word of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll re-examine the quotations above with the KJV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
