The writer of Hebrews explained (Hebrews 9:6b-10 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

…the priests enter continually<\/a> into the outer tent as they perform their duties [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. But only the high priest enters once a year into the inner tent, and not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit is making clear that the way into the Holy Place had not yet appeared as long as the old tabernacle was standing. This was a symbol for the time then present, when gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not perfect the conscience of the worshiper. They served only for matters of food and drink and various ritual washings; they are external regulations1<\/sup><\/a><\/em> imposed until the new order came.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The writer of Hebrews declared that the law possesses <\/i>(\u1f14\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a participle of \u1f14\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) a shadow<\/i> (\u03a3\u03ba\u03b9\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03b9\u03ac <\/a>). Paul wrote that food or<\/a> drink<\/i>…the matter of a feast, new moon<\/a>, or Sabbath days<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> (i.e.<\/em>, those things described in the law) are <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>)…the shadow <\/i>(\u03c3\u03ba\u03b9\u1f70<\/a>). Two different phrases were translated reality itself<\/i> (Hebrews) or reality <\/i>(Colossians) in the NET. The author of Hebrews wrote \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03ba\u1f79\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> (literally: \u201cthe image of the things\u201d), while Paul wrote \u03c4\u1f78<\/a>…\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, (literally: \u201cthe body\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

I won’t quarrel with the NET translation except to say that it doesn’t imply that the shadow is unreal<\/em>. A shadow is very real and prompts one to look up or turn around and look in another direction for what has cast it. I’m particularly exercised here to look for what cast the shadow of the scape-goat <\/i>or the goat<\/i>…to send<\/i>…away for Azazel<\/i>. The Scriptures listed in \u201c6 Bible Verses about Scapegoat<\/a>,\u201d on Knowing Jesus<\/a> online indicate to me that \u03c4\u1f78<\/a>…\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> was understood literally as \u201cthe body of Christ.\u201d There is another way to understand this phrase, especially in this particular context.<\/span><\/p>\n

One may assume that the verb of being \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd from the first clause is implied in the second: \u03c4\u1f78<\/a>…\u03c3\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> (\u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>) \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, \u201cthe body [is] of Christ\u201d or \u201c[is] of the Christ.\u201d Consider the following translation (Colossians 2:17 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This, coupled with the plural \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> in Hebrews, gives me both the license and the inclination to seek that particular aspect of Christ’s atonement4<\/sup><\/a> that casts this particular shadow. <\/span>What comes to mind as I consider the <\/i>scape-goat,5<\/sup><\/a> the one to be sent off<\/i>,6<\/sup><\/a> is Paul’s continuing explanation of one’s death to sin<\/a> through faith in Christ (Romans 7:14-20 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n

For we know that the law is spiritual\u2014but I am unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want\u2014instead, I do what I hate. But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good. But now it is no longer me doing it, but<\/a> sin that lives in me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot<\/a> do it. For I do not do the good I want, but<\/a> I do the very evil I do not want! Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but<\/a> sin that lives in me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This deserves a more in-depth look: For we know that the law is spiritual\u2014but I <\/i>(\u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a>) am unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a> In another essay<\/a> I wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n

It is difficult to hear Paul call himself<\/span><\/span> <\/em>unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin<\/span><\/span>. After all, what does that mean for someone like me? But Paul was describing himself as a man <\/span><\/span><\/em>deceived<\/span><\/span>[9<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> and seized by a fit of coveting, <\/span><\/span><\/em>sin <\/span><\/span>[old man], <\/span><\/span><\/em>seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>[10<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> In the beginning this old man (sin personified) was perceived by Paul as <\/span>I <\/span>(\u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a>), <\/span><\/span><\/em>I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Benson Commentary<\/a>8<\/sup><\/a> reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

But I am<\/span><\/span> carnal<\/span><\/span> \u2014 That is, man, considered in himself, as in a state of nature, and destitute of the regenerating grace of God, <\/span><\/span><\/em>is carnal<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Meyer’s NT Commentary<\/a>9<\/sup><\/a> reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a> \u03b4\u03ad<\/a>] <\/span><\/span><\/em>but I<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/em>i.e.<\/span><\/span> according to the \u1f30\u03b4\u03af\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> pervading the entire section: <\/span><\/span><\/em>the man, not yet regenerate by the Holy Spirit, in his relation to the Mosaic law given to him<\/span><\/span>…<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I think we were all mistaken. Consider the I <\/i>Paul described: <\/span><\/p>\n

For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing<\/span>.10<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here, I don\u2019t understand <\/i>was \u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>, the I <\/i>being understood from the 1st<\/sup> person verb. And, what I am doing <\/i>was \u1f43<\/a>…\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>. Again, the I <\/i>is understood from the 1st<\/sup> person verb. Paul continued:<\/span><\/p>\n

For I do not do what I want\u2014instead, I do what I hate.11<\/em><\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The I <\/i>Paul described had a new desire (Romans 3:10-18<\/a>), a new will, to do the will of God revealed in the law. He was not \u201cin a state of nature, and destitute of the regenerating grace of God.\u201d He did not describe his plight as one \u201cnot yet regenerate by the Holy Spirit, in his relation to the Mosaic law given to him.\u201d Rather, he described an I <\/i>who was born from above<\/a><\/i>, born of water and spirit<\/a><\/i>, born of the flesh<\/a><\/i> and born of the Spirit<\/a><\/i>. I want to do the good<\/i>, he wrote, but I cannot<\/a> do it<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
