It led me to Paul&#8217;s continuing discussion of the death of those who were <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+6:3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>baptized into Christ Jesus<\/em><\/a> (Romans 7:14-20 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For we know that the law is spiritual\u2014but I am <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn29\">unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_Table16\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want\u2014instead, I do what I hate. But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good. But now it is no longer me doing it, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn30\">but<\/a> sin that lives in me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn14\">cannot<\/a> do it. For I do not do the good I want, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn15\">but<\/a> I do the very evil I do not want! Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn16\">but<\/a> sin that lives in me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Immediately, I was confronted with my own unbelief. My religious mind rebels against the idea that <i>I am <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn29\">unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Why adhere to a religion that renders me <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn29\">unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin<\/i>? The easiest way to overcome the evangelical penchant of my religious mind to fabricate a religion palatable to unbelievers is to stop thinking about religion and start thinking about truth: <i>Set them apart in the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn35\">truth<\/a><\/i>, Jesus prayed to his Father; <i>your word is truth<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_I\"><\/a>Truthfully, my religious mind wants <i>I am <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn29\">unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin <\/i>to apply to <i>the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> My <i>old man <\/i>may well be the proximate cause of my unspirituality and slavery to sin, but Paul described an <i>I<\/i>,<i> <\/i>as I am seen here and now, that is comprised of both an <i>old man <\/i>and a <i>new man who has been created in God\u2019s image\u2014in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth:<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> <i>For I want to do the good, <\/i>he wrote, <i>but I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn14\">cannot<\/a> do it<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though this saying is too defeatist for my religious mind, its truth is readily apparent when contrasted to the lie told at the inauguration of the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"TOP\">\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Romans 7:18b (NET)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Exodus 19:8b (NET)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"TOP\">\n<td width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For I want to do the good, but I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn14\">cannot<\/a> do it.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">All that the Lord has commanded we will do!<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Besides, <i>I <\/i>do not do the good: <i>For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God. I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I suppose I&#8217;ve wanted this <i>I <\/i>to be <i>the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> only, but Paul wrote (Romans 12:1 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ta.html#ta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swmata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> as a sacrifice\u2014alive, holy, and pleasing to God\u2014which is your reasonable service.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I wonder if <i>persons <\/i>might be a better translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sw.html#swmata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a> here, but the bodies or persons to whom Paul wrote were comprised of both an <i>old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><i> <\/i>and a <i>new man who has been created in God\u2019s image\u2014in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul continued: <i>so that I may live to God<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> Literally: \u201cso that (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>) to God (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qew2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u1ff7<\/a>) I may live (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>).\u201d The <i>may <\/i>was added because the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>. Logically, it can be dropped, however, because this is a purpose <i>and <\/i>a result clause: \u201cto God I live\u201d because \u201cI by law to law died.\u201d <i>Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live before him,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> Jesus told <em>some Sadducees (who contend that there is no resurrection)<\/em>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>I have been crucified with Christ <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cr.html#cristw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunes.html#sunestaurwmai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>):<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> \u201cin Christ, to Christ, by Christ I have been and am crucified with [Him].\u201d The Greek verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sunes.html#sunestaurwmai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#TENSE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfect tense<\/a>: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The basic thought of the perfect tense is that the progress of an action has been completed and the results of the action are continuing on, in full effect. In other words, the progress of the action has reached its culmination and the finished results are now in existence. Unlike the English perfect, which indicates a completed past action, the Greek perfect tense indicates the continuation and present state of a completed past action.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For example, Galatians 2:20 should be translated &#8220;I am in a present state of having been crucified with Christ,&#8221; indicating that not only was I crucified with Christ in the past, but I am existing now in that present condition.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul continued: <i>and it is no longer I who live<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/12\/22\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-9\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> Literally, \u201cand
