[I]t is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God;<\/i> Paul wrote, rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a> In another essay<\/a> I asked, \u201cSo, if God did not allow <\/i>[Abimelech] to touch<\/i> Sarah, why didn\u2019t He do the same for Pharaoh and Sarai?\u201d I’m hoping that a thorough study of the story of Abram\/Abraham and Sarai\/Sarah will give me not only a richer understanding of Paul’s contrast between the children of the flesh <\/i>and the children of promise<\/i> but an answer to this question as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here is the first contrast: the children of the flesh <\/i>(NET note 18<\/a>: \u201cthe natural offspring\u201d) have a point of origin, a country<\/i>, a kindred<\/i>, a father’s house<\/i>, while the children of promise <\/i>are called by God: Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father\u2019s household to the land that I will show you<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a> As he<\/i>3<\/sup><\/a> was walking by the Sea of Galilee <\/i>[Jesus] saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen) <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. He said to them, \u201cFollow me <\/i>(\u03b4\u03b5\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> \u1f40\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>).4<\/sup><\/a> If you wish to be perfect<\/i>, Jesus said to a young man<\/a> <\/i>who was very rich<\/a><\/i>, go sell your possessions and give the money to the<\/a> poor, and you will have treasure in heaven<\/a>. This contrast stands out clearly: the children of promise <\/i>receive promises from God that are not received by the children of the flesh<\/i>. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest<\/i>, Jesus promised. Take my yoke on you and learn from me because I am gentle<\/a> and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. <\/a>The enabling grace of God, implicit in his call or command, is manifest among the children of promise <\/i>as obedience to his word. God’s enabling grace is much less apparent among the children of the flesh<\/i>. Abram, blessed by God (Genesis 12:2<\/a>), was sent to the Canaanites, descendants of Canaan, cursed by Noah (Genesis 9:20-27<\/a>). I’m merely noting it at present, reminding myself to be mindful of how the Canaanites treat Abram (Genesis 12:3<\/a>) as I proceed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The discrepancy between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint was addressed in a note (14<\/a>) in the NET:<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea, perhaps, is that Israel was central to Yahweh\u2019s purposes and all other nations were arranged and distributed according to how they related to Israel. See S. R. Driver, Deuteronomy (ICC), 355-56. For the MT \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc (be<\/sup>ne yisra\u02beel, \u201csons of Israel\u201d) a Qumran fragment has \u201csons of God,\u201d while the LXX reads \u1f00\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6 (angel\u014dn theou, \u201cangels of God\u201d), presupposing \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc (be<\/sup>ne \u02beel) or \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd (bene \u02beelim). \u201cSons of God\u201d is undoubtedly the original reading; the MT and LXX have each interpreted it differently. MT assumes that the expression \u201csons of God\u201d refers to Israel (cf. Hos. 1:10<\/a>), while LXX has assumed that the phrase refers to the angelic heavenly assembly (Pss 29:1<\/a>; 89:6<\/a>; cf. as well Ps 82<\/a>). The phrase is also attested in Ugaritic, where it refers to the high god El\u2019s divine assembly. According to the latter view, which is reflected in the translation, the Lord delegated jurisdiction over the nations to his angelic host (cf. Dan. 10:13-21<\/a>), while reserving for himself Israel, over whom he rules directly. For a defense of the view taken here, see M. S. Though Daniel called him \u05d0\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1<\/a> (‘\u00ee\u0161<\/i>), \u1f00\u03bd\u1f74\u03c1<\/a> in Greek, his description didn’t sound like any man <\/i>I’ve ever seen. Rashi<\/a>, following \u201cOur Sages\u201d recorded in a \u201cTractate<\/a>,\u201d understood \u05db\u05b0\u05ea\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u0597\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1<\/a> (tar\u0161\u00ee\u0161<\/i>), translated like the beryl <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and resembled yellow jasper <\/i>(NET), as a measure of immense body size rather than a jaundiced appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

And his body was like tarshish<\/b>: Our Sages of blessed memory explained in Tractate Hullin<\/a> (9lb): \u201cHis body was two thousand parasangs<\/a> large, like the measurement of the sea named Tarshish, and that is the sea of Africa (the Mediterranean).\u201d12<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This brief glimpse into an invisible realm disturbed me. How could a heavenly being sent by an omnipotent God be delayed even three weeks by, presumably, another heavenly being? It seemed to lend too much credence to the warring gods of pagan myths. But this time I get a different picture from the Hebrew and Greek words: \u05e2\u05b9\u05de\u05b5\u059a\u05d3<\/a> (\u02bf\u0101ma\u1e0f<\/i>) \u05dc\u05b0\u05e0\u05b6\u05d2\u05b0\u05d3\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u0599<\/a> (ne\u1e21e\u1e0f<\/i>), withstood me <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV), was opposing me <\/i>(NET); \u03b5\u1f31\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> \u1f10\u03be<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, stood opposite me <\/i>(NETS), withstood me <\/i>(English Elpenor). <\/span><\/p>\n

Consider Rashi’s<\/a> commentary to Daniel 10:13:<\/span><\/p>\n

has been standing against me<\/b>: to battle with me in heaven by requesting an extension for the kingdom for Persia to enable them to subjugate you (Israel). Behold twenty-one days that he has been standing against me.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The only true God<\/i><\/a>, delaying his plan twenty-one earth days to listen patiently with genuine interest to arguments put forth by the heavenly being He put in charge of Persia, sounds much more like the One I am beginning to know. It makes sense to me that Michael<\/a> and the unnamed heavenly being who appeared to Daniel would argue the Lord’s points and purpose for Israel before Him as well and, ultimately, prevail.<\/span><\/p>\n
