I don&#8217;t disagree. I&#8217;ve labored<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> over this to the point of distraction. <i>Sexual immorality <\/i>seems ultimately meaningless to me: it is so ill-defined it can mean anything anyone wants it to mean. The <i>temptation to sexual immorality<\/i>, while interesting, still relies on <i>sexual immorality<\/i>. For my purposes in this essay I&#8217;ll translate \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2, \u201cthe worship of sex,\u201d because that&#8217;s what I did at seventeen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I knew next to nothing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit of the Spirit<\/a>. I assume I thought God&#8217;s own <i>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn4\">gentleness<\/a>, self-control<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> were just more works I had to do because I had <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2014\/10\/18\/my-reasons-and-my-reason-part-5\/#_bait\">inadvertently<\/a> become a <i>Christian <\/i>when I said a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_heaven\">sinner&#8217;s prayer<\/a> to Jesus to avoid burning in hell. After I had sex for the first time, I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_fruit\">assumed<\/a> that <i>love<\/i>, <i>joy<\/i>, <i>peace<\/i>, <i>kindness <\/i> and <i>gentleness <\/i>at least were a natural result of sex. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup><em>8<\/em><\/sup><\/a> the wife does.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek words translated <i>her conjugal rights <\/i>were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/of.html#ofeilhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/of.html#ofeilh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03ae<\/a>: \u201cdebt, due, indebtedness, duty, obligation.\u201d The verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apod.html#apodidotw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u1f79\u03c4\u03c9<\/a> was translated <i>should give<\/i>. They are definitely unprepared for marriage (if there is such a thing as being prepared for marriage). \u201cTake me, I&#8217;m yours,\u201d is an essential ingredient. The \u201cyour wish is my command\u201d consent for sex was already given at the altar, so to speak, which is not to say that there is no place for mercy and forgiveness in marriage if one party refuses sex unilaterally. It is to say that to do so is to refuse to give what is owed to one&#8217;s beloved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I ate lunch one afternoon last month at the <a href=\"https:\/\/kcbbq.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kansas City Barbeque<\/a> down the street from the San Diego Convention Center. Their food is good but their main claim to fame is being the location where the \u201csleazy bar scenes\u201d from the original <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Top_Gun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top Gun<\/a> were filmed. In one of the more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DKgcThjYBHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memorable moments<\/a> from one of those sleazy bar scenes, Goose&#8217;s wife Carol (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meg_Ryan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meg Ryan<\/a>) yells across the bar: \u201cHey, Goose, you big stud!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Goose (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Edwards_(actor)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Edwards<\/a>) replies: \u201cThat&#8217;s me, honey!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTake me to bed or lose me forever!\u201d Carol commands and threatens her husband. He addressed self-control later (1 Corinthians 7:8, 9 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup><em>12<\/em><\/sup><\/a> good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egk.html#egkrateuontai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egk.html#egkrateuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>, they should marry. For it is better<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup><em>13<\/em><\/sup><\/a> to marry than to burn with passion.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/akr.html#akrasia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a> can mean <i>lack of self-control<\/i> (and there may be some double entendre here) <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+23:25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>self-indulgence<\/i><\/a> would better address the point. In this context to <i>deprive one another <\/i>of what is owed even <i>by agreement for a limited time <\/i>is a <i>self-indulgence<\/i> rather than a <i>lack of self-control<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fruit of the Holy Spirit, God&#8217;s own <i>love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egk.html#egkrateia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>, translated <em>self-control<\/em>, is not on the side of continued abstinence here, but buoys up and carries a married couple along to be back upon it again and again. What might tempt (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u1fc3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pei.html#peirazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) one, or a married couple addressed as one, during this abstinence is that they become all too comfortable and complacent with abstinence, especially for something perceived as a higher calling. Married couples become comfortable and complacent for much less: general busyness, children, jobs, financial or other worries and concerns, not to mention boredom with one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In their comfort and complacency, disregarding what is owed, each might begin to feel that he or she has regained authority over his or her own body, even authority to share his or her own body with another. After all, in this comfort and complacency one&#8217;s spouse no longer fulfils one&#8217;s sexual desires. Here is where that <i>lack of self-control<\/i> might come into play, resulting in adultery, divorce, what the text as translated seemed to imply prematurely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul continued (1 Corinthians 7:6, 7a ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now as a concession, not a command, I say this. I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/09\/30\/christianity-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\">wish<\/a> that all were as I myself am <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/09\/30\/christianity-part-11\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I think <i>concession<\/i> might be more begrudging a translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sugg.html#suggnwmhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03b3\u03bd\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sugg.html#suggnwmh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03b3\u03bd\u03ce\u03bc\u03b7<\/a>) than is absolutely necessary. It, too, might have been translated <i>indulgence<\/i>, a little lighthearted wordplay. <i>I say this <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/de.html#de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f72<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/le.html#legw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) refers all the way back to: <i>But because of <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/por.html#porneias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> [the worship of sex], <i>each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> Paul was careful not to command everyone to marry because <i>It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The idea that, <i>but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control<\/i><\/span>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> was a <i>concession <\/i>rather than a <i>command <\/i>seems untenable to me. I don&#8217;t believe Paul jumped ship suddenly and altered the terms of marriage he had just spelled out. It seems, however, that he would divert the anticipated outcome of betrothal in what I assume was an arranged marriage<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a> (1 Corinthians 7:36-38 ESV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry\u2014it is no sin. As I study in Greek now, I think <i>anyone <\/i>means \u201canyone in a given community who knows any particular man and woman in this situation.\u201d I chose \u201cto incur disgrace\u201d because this is the infinitive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asc.html#aschmonew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asc.html#aschmonein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, rather than the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> person singular form <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/asc.html#aschmonei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c3\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a> (<i>e.g.<\/i>, <i>that he is not behaving properly<\/i>). And <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> might be a personal pronoun in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#GENITIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genitive case<\/a>, <i>of his <\/i>or <i>his<\/i>, or it might be an <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autou2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adverb<\/a>: \u201cin the very place, here, there, in this place, in that place.\u201d I translated <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epi.html#epi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f76<\/a> \u201cupon\u201d if \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 is a pronoun or \u201ctoward\u201d (I might have chosen \u201cagainst\u201d) if \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 is an adverb as a matter of preference. So, I&#8217;m understanding this clause to mean something like: \u201cIf anyone in a given community thinks an engaged couple remaining unmarried disgraces the young woman in that unconsummated relationship&#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek of the next clause is: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#ean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/h.html#h4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f96<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperakmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>; \u201cif\u201d or \u201cwhen he is\u201d or \u201cshe is beyond the prime of youth;\u201d <i>if she is past the bloom of youth <\/i>(NET), <i>if she pass the flower of her age <\/i>(KJV). This was the main reason I assumed Paul referred to a marriage arranged before either party was actually old enough to marry [see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote17sym\">footnote 17<\/a>]. But the verb of being <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/h.html#h4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f96<\/a> doesn&#8217;t specify gender and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperakmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> might be masculine or feminine. Apparently, the translators of some <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/1_corinthians\/7-36.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent Bible versions<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/20\/christianity-part-13\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> reached back to the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/akm.html#akmazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> and decided that in this particular context <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uper.html#uperakmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> meant a really <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/horny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">horny<\/a> guy: <i>if his passions are strong <\/i>(ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A note (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+7:36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27<\/a>) in the NET acknowledged this as a possible translation:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or referring to an engaged man: \u201cif he is past the critical point,\u201d \u201cif his passions are too strong.\u201d The word literally means \u201cto be past the high point.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next, <i>and it has to be<\/i>: literally, \u201cand so (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#outws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f55\u03c4\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>) ought (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/of.html#ofeilei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u1f77\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>) to happen\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gi.html#ginesqai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u1f77\u03bd\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>). This clause doesn&#8217;t help determine the meaning of the previous.
