&#8211; Exodus, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The Lord said to Moses, \u201cGet up early in the morning, stand before Pharaoh, and tell him, \u2018Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: \u201cRelease my people so that they may serve me!\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is the seventh plague on Egypt. \u00a0<i>You are still exalting yourself against my people by not releasing them <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/12\/29\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-1\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>], the Lord continued. \u00a0<i>I am going to cause very severe hail to rain down about this time tomorrow, such hail as has never occurred in Egypt from the day it was founded until now <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/12\/29\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-1\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<i>So now, send instructions to gather your livestock and all your possessions in the fields to a safe place. \u00a0Every person or animal caught in the field and not brought into the house \u2013 the hail will come down on them, and they will die!<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/12\/29\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-1\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>]<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_hardened\"><\/a><i>Those of Pharaoh\u2019s servants who feared <\/i>(<em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3372\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0<\/a>) <i>the word of the Lord hurried to bring their servants and livestock into the houses <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<i>, but those who did not take the word of the Lord seriously left their servants and their cattle in the field<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/25\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-3\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The rabbis who translated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/exo\/9\/20\/t_bibles_59020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a> used <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#foboumenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> (a present participle of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#fobew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>).\u00a0 <i>Jesus told a parable about a judge who neither feared<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/fo.html#foboumenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03bf\u03cd\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <i>God nor respected people<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But even this judge could be persuaded by a <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/13\/justice-vengeance-and-punishment\/\">widow\u2019s persistence<\/a>.\u00a0 <i>I will give her justice<\/i>, the judge said, <i>or in the end she will wear me out by her unending pleas<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But even after six other plagues happened as prophesied by Moses there were still <i>those who did not take the word of the Lord seriously<\/i>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/exo\/9\/21\/t_bibles_59021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rabbis<\/a> used <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prose.html#prosesce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03ad\u03c3\u03c7\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> [<b>Addendum 12\/26\/2025<\/b>: a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prose.html#prosecw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>] (<i>hold to<\/i>), they did not <em>hold to<\/em> the word of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_reason\"><\/a>It caused me to consider that <i>those who did not take the word of the Lord seriously<\/i> were actually <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/01\/10\/romans-part-36\/\"><i>hardened<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0 The judge did not fear God but could be persuaded by his own inconvenience.\u00a0 To lose one\u2019s animals and slaves is a major inconvenience.\u00a0 Six out of six plagues would seemingly convince one that the seventh was possible if not likely.\u00a0 Reason alone would persuade one to take precautions at least at the time of day prophesied simply to avoid the greater inconvenience of losing everything.\u00a0 But only those who <i>feared the word of the Lord<\/i> acted rationally.\u00a0 It gave me the impression that the others believed (though did not fear) that the word was the Lord\u2019s, and acted contrary to his word because it was his word.\u00a0 They were <i>hardened<\/i>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The hail struck everything in the open fields, both people and animals, throughout all the land of Egypt. \u00a0The hail struck everything that grows in the field, and it broke all the trees of the field to pieces <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/12\/29\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-1\/#_Table27\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, was there no hail <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/12\/29\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-1\/#_Table29\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0So Pharaoh sent and summoned Moses and Aaron and said to them, \u201cI have sinned this time! \u00a0The Lord is righteous, and I and my people are guilty. \u00a0Pray to the Lord, for the mighty thunderings and hail are too much! \u00a0I will release you and you will stay no longer.\u201d<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moses promised to pray that the hail cease.\u00a0 <i>But as for you<\/i>, He said to Pharaoh, <i>and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear <\/i>(<em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3372\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc\u05df<\/a>) <i>the Lord God<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/exo\/9\/30\/t_bibles_59030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a> the rabbis used <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pef.html#pefobhsqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c6\u03cc\u03b2\u03b7\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, (<i>afraid<\/i>).\u00a0 This form was not used in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<p><i>When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder ceased, he sinned again: both he and his servants hardened their hearts. \u00a0So Pharaoh\u2019s heart <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/03\/26\/fear-exodus-part-2\/\">remained hard<\/a>, and he did not release the Israelites, as the Lord had predicted through Moses<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Pharaoh certainly believed the word was the Lord\u2019s as a fact, but he did not <i>fear<\/i> that word.\u00a0 Here I begin to grasp the <i>fear of the Lord<\/i> as something that is combined with factual acceptance to become New Testament <i>faith<\/i>, as opposed to <i>dead faith<\/i> or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/\"><i>faith alone<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This <i>fear<\/i> is obviously not a flight of terror but a conviction to act in accordance with the word (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lxx\/exo\/9\/20\/t_bibles_59020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Septuagint<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/rh.html#rhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1fe5\u1fc6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) of the Lord.\u00a0 In New Testament terms it would be equivalent to <i>the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort \u2013 for the sake of his good pleasure \u2013 is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn39\">God<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And this is because <i>it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/22\/religious-and-righteous-prayer\/#sdfootnote13sym\">shows mercy<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In a similar sense the New Testament meaning of the <i>fear of the Lord<\/i> is equivalent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/22\/antichrist-part-2\/\"><i>love of God<\/i><\/a>: <i>Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments.\u00a0 The one who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/22\/antichrist-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\">says<\/a> \u201cI have come to know God\u201d and yet does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in such a person <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/22\/antichrist-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>].\u00a0 <i>But whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luke used the phrase <i>fear of the Lord<\/i> in this association with the <i>encouragement of the Holy Spirit<\/i>: <i>Then <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote12sym\">the church<\/a> throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote13sym\">experienced<\/a> peace and thus was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote14sym\">strengthened<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Living<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <i>in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, the church increased in numbers<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 At first glance Paul seemed to use <i>fear of the Lord<\/i> in a more <i>fearful<\/i> sense: <i>For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/08\/09\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-2\/#sdfootnote14sym\">evil<\/a> <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/08\/09\/justice-and-mercy-revisited-part-2\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<i>Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people<\/i>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I expand the context, however, Paul spoke first of faith: <i>For we know that if our earthly house, the tent we live in, is dismantled, we have a building from God, a house not built by human hands, that is eternal in the heavens<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 While the natural person clings to this earthly <i>tent<\/i> for dear life <i>we groan while we are in this tent, since we are weighed down, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn19\">because<\/a> we do not want to be unclothed, but clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>Now the one who prepared us for this very purpose<\/i>, Paul continued (including by the way appearing <i>before the judgment seat of Christ<\/i>) <i>is God, who <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/20\/psalm-22-part-5\/#_ftn20\">gave<\/a> us the Spirit as a down payment<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So is any of this a cause to be <i>fearful<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>Paul continued (2 Corinthians 5:6-9 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth we are absent from the Lord \u2013 for we live by faith, not by sight. \u00a0Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. \u00a0So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition to please him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And what is this <i>ambition to please him<\/i> but the <i>fear of the Lord<\/i>?\u00a0 <i>Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people, but we are well known to God, and I hope we are well known to your consciences too<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <i>For the love of Christ controls us, since we have concluded this, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/27\/peters-second-gospel-proclamation-part-3\/#_ftn12\">that<\/a> Christ died for all; therefore all have died <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/27\/peters-second-gospel-proclamation-part-3\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<i>And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And all these things are from God who reconciled us to himself through <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/27\/peters-second-gospel-proclamation-part-3\/#_ftn17\">Christ<\/a>, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/27\/peters-second-gospel-proclamation-part-3\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]. \u00a0<\/em>In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people\u2019s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation. \u00a0Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His plea through us. \u00a0We plead with you on Christ\u2019s behalf, \u201cBe reconciled to God!\u201d \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/06\/04\/psalm-22-part-1\/#_ftn8\">God<\/a> made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/04\/psalm-22-part-8\/#_ftn12\">we would become<\/a> the righteousness of God<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/06\/04\/psalm-22-part-1\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So before Christ was crucified, rose again, ascended to heaven and the Holy Spirit was given to provide this love, this desire and this effort, the Lord cultivated fear to motivate his people:\u00a0 <i>The Lord said to Moses, \u201cGo to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, in order to display these signs of mine before him, and in order that in the hearing of your son and your grandson you may tell how I made fools of the Egyptians and about my signs that I displayed among them, so that you may know that I am the Lord.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Perhaps more to the point was Moses\u2019 response to Israel\u2019s fear when God spoke the law at Sinai: <i>Do not fear <\/i>(<i>y\u0101r\u0113&#8217;<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3372\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>)<i>, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him <\/i>(<i>yir&#8217;\u00e2<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3374\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9<\/a>; KJV: <i>his fear<\/i>)<i> may be before you so that you do not sin.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span
