I like it. But it would be easier to recognize when I was doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve been home a lot recently, able to attend church and Bible study. The Pastor&#8217;s sermon series was on Genesis and the Bible study was an in depth look and discussion. I became increasingly uncomfortable with where my mind was going, especially in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> chapter of Genesis. The man&#8217;s motivations were more inscrutable or inanely mundane: \u201cThis is the food my wife gave me, so I ate it.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/05\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> There are two different words for <em>desire<\/em> in the Masoretic text leading to the moment the woman <i>took of its fruit and ate<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/05\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> A note (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+3:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18<\/a>) in the NET translated the Hebrew: \u201cthat good was the tree for food, and that desirable it was to the eyes, and desirable was the tree to make one wise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The rabbis who translated the Septuagint didn&#8217;t choose any forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qelhma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> for these words. Rather, they chose <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/are.html#areston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/are.html#arestos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03b5\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8378\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05ea\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (<i>ta&#8217;\u0103v\u00e2<\/i>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/wr.html#wraion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f61\u03c1\u03b1\u1fd6\u1f79\u03bd<\/a> (a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/wr.html#wraios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f61\u03c1\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h2530\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05a4\u05d3<\/a> (<i>\u1e25\u0101ma\u1e0f<\/i>). But who cares about the Septuagint? Let&#8217;s just go with it. This happened because the woman exercised her <i>free will<\/i>, even if the man just followed her lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let me get naked and prostrate myself before <i>free will <\/i>to see if I can recognize that I am naked and prostrate before a man-made idol: The first thing that occurs to me is that <i>free will <\/i>must be evil, since it caused the woman to disobey God&#8217;s command. There&#8217;s no evidence for that in the text, but what good is <em>free will <\/em>if it is incapable of obedience?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So now, I can use my idol to judge God: If the woman&#8217;s God-given <i>free will <\/i>lacked the power, authority, whatever, to make it possible for her to have obeyed God, then God was unfair, vindictive, <i>evil <\/i>in a word. God is not evil. Therefore by <i>free will <\/i>human beings may choose righteousness and obedience. You notice what just happened. I reasoned that God-given discernment at a minimum should have made the king wise enough to follow God\u2019s rules for kings, or God-given discernment can\u2019t be discernment given by God. That\u2019s what the Bible seems to be saying here. href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6440\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">occurrences<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h6440\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05de\u05e4\u05e0\u05d9<\/a> (<em>p\u0101n\u00eem<\/em>) in the early chapters of Genesis, which I won&#8217;t undertake here, makes it difficult to believe that it was meant to imply that the woman, the man or the serpent literally saw God&#8217;s face. <i>No one has ever seen God; the only <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/13\/atonement-part-6\/#_ftn16\">God<\/a>, who is at the Father\u2019s side, he has made him known<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/05\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-1\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> So, we imagine that they saw Jesus. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heroic_nudity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nude<\/a>? The woman doesn&#8217;t strike me as one who would need to eat forbidden fruit to realize she was naked if she had already seen Jesus in <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+17:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shiny white clothes<\/a>. All the text says is that they heard his words and knew that He responded to their words. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lord God&#8217;s <i>voice<\/i>&#8230;<i>walking in the garden <\/i>(Tanakh\/KJV\/English Elpenor) is a curious turn of phrase. I suppose it could be understood as \u201cthe voice of the Lord God, walking in the garden.\u201d But it seems to explain the alternative translations: <i>the sound of the Lord God moving about in the orchard <\/i>(NET) and <i>the sound of the Lord God walking about in the orchard<\/i> (NETS). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hebrew words <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7307\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (<i>r\u00fba\u1e25<\/i>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h3117\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u0591\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd<\/a> (<i>y\u00f4m<\/i>), which I suppose would literally translate, \u201cin\u201d or \u201ctoward the spirit of the day,\u201d were translated various ways: <i>toward the cool of the day <\/i>(Tanakh), <i>in the cool of the day <\/i>(KJV), <i>at the breezy time of the day <\/i>(NET), <i>in the evening <\/i>(NETS) and <i>in the afternoon <\/i>(English Elpenor). In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/bible_cdo\/aid\/8167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanakh<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chabad.org<\/a> it was understood as the direction the Lord&#8217;s voice walked: <i>to the direction of the sun<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/05\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-1\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> And despite the fact that the rabbis who translated the Septuagint chose no form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneuma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7307\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05dc\u05b0\u05e8\u05a3\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7<\/a> (<i>r\u00fba\u1e25<\/i>) here, I&#8217;m reminded of Jesus&#8217; words to Nicodemus (John 3:5-8 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, he cannot enter the kingdom of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Niehaus (God at Sinai [SOTBT], 155-57) offers a different interpretation of the phrase, relating \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd (yom, usually understood as \u201cday\u201d) to an Akkadian cognate umu (\u201cstorm\u201d) and translates the phrase \u201cin the wind of the storm.\u201d If Niehaus is correct, then God is not pictured as taking an afternoon stroll through the orchard, but as coming in a powerful windstorm to confront the man and woman with their rebellion.
