Jesus was walking in the temple area in Solomon\u2019s<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> Portico<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Religious leaders surrounded him and asked, \u201cHow long will you keep us in suspense? \u00a0If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.\u201d<\/i> Jesus replied, \u201cI told you and you do not believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).\u201d3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They did not think it was true; they were not persuaded<\/a>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The deeds<\/i> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) I do in my Father\u2019s name testify<\/i> (\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) about me<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a> that Jesus did in his Father\u2019s name testified that He is the Christ, as opposed to those who loved the darkness rather than the light, because their<\/i> \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a> were<\/i> [full of labours, annoyances, and hardships<\/a>].6<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

But<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> you refuse to believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>), Jesus continued, because<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a> you are not<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> my sheep<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The word translated refuse<\/i> is simply \u03bf\u1f50<\/a>, the absolute as opposed to the relative negation in Greek.\u00a0 You believe not, Jesus said, because you are not my sheep<\/i>.\u00a0 They were hardened<\/a> <\/i>[Table<\/a>], as it is written, \u201cGod gave them a spirit of stupor<\/b>, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear<\/b>, to this very day.\u201d<\/b><\/i>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

My sheep listen<\/a><\/i> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) to my voice<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is in contrast to those who had not been given the opportunity<\/a> to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven<\/i>:13<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear<\/i> (\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>) nor do they understand<\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul wrote, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? \u00a0Absolutely not! \u00a0But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles<\/a>, to make Israel jealous<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Still speaking of his sheep, Jesus said, I know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) them, and they follow me<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0These are they who are called according to<\/i> [God\u2019s] purpose, <\/i>because those whom he foreknew<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03ad\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) he also predestined<\/a> to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. \u00a0And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified<\/i>.17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand. \u00a0My Father, who<\/a> has given them to me, is greater<\/a> than all, and no one can snatch them from my<\/a> Father\u2019s hand <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0The Father and I are one<\/i>.18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then by their actions the religious leaders proved Jesus\u2019 original words, that they did not believe that his deeds testified that He was the Christ.\u00a0 They picked up<\/i>19<\/sup><\/a> rocks again to stone him to death<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I have shown you many good deeds from the Father<\/i>, Jesus said.\u00a0 For which one of them are you going to stone me?<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 We are not going to stone you for a good deed<\/i>, the religious leaders answered, but for blasphemy, because you, a man, are claiming to be God.<\/i>22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

They lacked the knowledge that was revealed to Peter<\/a> by Jesus\u2019 Father in heaven<\/i>:23<\/sup><\/a> You are the Christ, the Son of the living God<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They did not share Nathaniel\u2019s<\/a> insight that Jesus was the Son of God<\/i> and the<\/a> king of Israel<\/i>.25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently the religious leaders assumed that the Christ would serve their interests as they perceived their interests not supersede them, certainly not question their leadership.\u00a0 \u201cIs it not written in your law<\/i>,\u201d Jesus answered them, \u201c\u2018I<\/b><\/i>26<\/sup><\/a> said, you are gods<\/b>\u2019? \u00a0If those people to whom the word of God came were called \u2018gods\u2019 (and the scripture cannot be broken), do you say about the one whom the Father set apart and sent into the world, \u2018You are blaspheming,\u2019 because I said, \u2018I am the Son of God\u2019?\u201d<\/i>27<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>There is a lot to say about this turn in Jesus\u2019 argument.\u00a0 I hope to get to it in time.\u00a0 For the moment I want to highlight Jesus\u2019 heart.\u00a0 In the heat of debate he did not ask the religious leaders to believe that He was a new species of human being, born of the flesh of Adam through his mother Mary and born of the Spirit of his Father<\/a>.\u00a0 He simply referred to those instances in the book of Exodus where human judges, those entrusted to judge according to God\u2019s law, were called elohim<\/i> (\u05d4\u05b8\u05a3\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u0594\u05d9\u05dd, a form of \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>), gods.28<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 If God called Israel\u2019s judges gods, He reasoned, is it right to \u201csay about the one whom the Father set apart and sent into the world, \u2018You are blaspheming,\u2019 because I said, \u2018I am the Son of God\u2019?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

If I do not perform the deeds<\/i> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>) of my Father<\/i>, Jesus continued, do not believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>) me<\/i>.29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And here again He revealed his heart.\u00a0 But if I do them, even if you do not believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) me, believe<\/i>30<\/sup><\/a> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>) the deeds<\/i> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)\u202631<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Though he had hardened them so that by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles<\/i>,32<\/sup><\/a> though we live by faith, not by sight<\/i>,33<\/sup><\/a> though it is a true and trustworthy statement that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved<\/a><\/i>,34<\/sup><\/a> face-to-face with his beloved adversaries Jesus encouraged them to trust their sight, the deeds they saw Him accomplish, so that you may come to know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) and understand<\/i>35<\/sup><\/a> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) that I am in the Father<\/i>36<\/sup><\/a> and the Father is in me<\/i>.37<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This was essentially what Jesus said to the messengers from John the Baptist when they asked, \u201c\u2018Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?\u2019\u201d \u00a0At that<\/i>38<\/sup><\/a> very time Jesus cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and granted sight<\/i>39<\/sup><\/a> to many who were blind. \u00a0So he<\/i>40<\/sup><\/a> answered them, \u201cGo tell John what you have seen and heard: The<\/i>41<\/sup><\/a> blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed,<\/i>42<\/sup><\/a> the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news proclaimed to them. \u00a0Blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.\u201d<\/i>43<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The religious leaders tried unsuccessfully to seize Him again.\u00a0 Jesus, however, continued performing the deeds<\/i> (\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03b1<\/a>) of <\/i>[his] Father<\/i> (John 11:1-4 NET).<\/p>\n

Now a certain man named Lazarus<\/a> was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived. \u00a0(Now it was Mary<\/a> who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet dry with her hair<\/a>, whose brother Lazarus was sick [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.) \u00a0So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, \u201cLord, look, the one you love is sick.\u201d \u00a0When Jesus heard this, he said, \u201cThis sickness will not lead to death, but to God\u2019s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cLazarus, come out!\u201d<\/i> Jesus said to the corpse that had laid four days in its tomb.\u00a0 The<\/a> one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped around his face. \u00a0Jesus said to them, \u201cUnwrap him and let him<\/a> go\u201d<\/i> [Table<\/a>].44<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u201cWe have a law<\/i>, the religious leaders said, and according to our<\/a> law\u00a0<\/i>[Jesus] ought to die, because he claimed to be the Son of God!\u201d<\/i>45<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Now Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in the presence of the<\/a> disciples<\/i>, John concluded, which are not recorded in this book. \u00a0But these are recorded so that you may believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) that Jesus<\/a> is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) you may have life in his name<\/i>.46<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0For God did not send his<\/a> Son into the world to condemn the world<\/i>, John wrote (or Jesus said) but that the world should be saved through him<\/i>.47<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
