This is a compound of two Greek words, protos meaning &#8220;first&#8221; and evangelion meaning &#8220;good news&#8221; or &#8220;gospel&#8221;. Thus, the verse is commonly referred to as the first mention in the Bible of the &#8220;good news&#8221; of salvation&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Identification of the &#8220;seed of the woman&#8221; with Jesus goes back at least as far as Irenaeus (180 AD)<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seed_of_the_woman#cite_note-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12<\/a>][<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seed_of_the_woman#cite_note-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13<\/a>]<\/sup>&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I think of the NET as the \u201chonest Bible,\u201d not because it is necessarily the best overall translation, but because of its notes which \u201copen the books\u201d as it were on the scholarly guesswork that goes into Bible translation. An article by the Assistant Editor of the NET, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.com\/2019\/07\/08\/consideration-of-contexts-in-the-translation-philosophy-of-the-net-bible-discussion-and-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Consideration of Contexts in the Translation Philosophy of the NET Bible: Discussion and Examples<\/a>,\u201d reads:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Genesis 3:15 has had a long history of interpretation. At issue presently is whether this text refers to a single entity in conflict with another single entity, or whether groups are in view. The text of the verse in the NET Bible is as follows [not in the version online from which I quote]:<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And I will put hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; they will attack your head, but you will attack their heel.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8230;At this time, the future coming of the Messiah had not been revealed, neither to the initial participants of the narrative nor to the author of the book. Therefore, it would be foreign to the original context to bring that meaning back into the passage in translation.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So the Lord God took this opportunity to address the origin of man&#8217;s antipathy for snakes? Whether the man and woman or Moses knew of the \u201ccoming of the Messiah\u201d is irrelevant. The Lord God knew. Did He converse with a snake about the destiny of snakes or with <i>the ancient serpent,<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><i> who is the devil and Satan<\/i>?<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I will utilize the work of scholars shamelessly when it corresponds to what the Lord is teaching me of Himself from his word. When it doesn&#8217;t, I remember Paul&#8217;s insight into those who would have dragged the Galatians <i><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+4:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under the law<\/a><\/i> (Galatians 4:17 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They court you eagerly, but for no good purpose; they want to exclude you, so that you would seek them eagerly.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I don&#8217;t often encounter aggressive scholars attempting to exclude me from the grace of God. I must decide, however, if I will believe the scholar&#8217;s work I am reading at any given moment or the Lord&#8217;s leading through his word. It&#8217;s really not a difficult decision: The Lord fills me with faith<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> in Him and his word. Scholars are powerless to do likewise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Wikipedia entry \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seed_of_the_woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seed of the woman<\/a>\u201d continued:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In Romans 16:20, there is perhaps the clearest reference to the Protoevangelium in the New Testament, &#8220;And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.&#8221; Here, the seed of the woman is identified as &#8220;the God of peace&#8221;, and yet the Church is identified as the feet that will bruise Satan&#8217;s head.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seed_of_the_woman#cite_note-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18<\/a>]<\/sup> Martin Luther, in his Lectures on Romans, also identifies the seed of the woman with &#8220;the word of God in the church&#8221;.<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seed_of_the_woman#cite_note-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This connection seemed forced until I searched for <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsei2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, translated <i>watch <\/i>(Septuagint), the word the rabbis chose for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7779\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d9\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05bd\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b0\u05da\u05b8\u05a3<\/a> (<i>\u0161\u00fbp\u0304<\/i>), translated <i>bruise <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and <i>strike <\/i>(NET). It only occurs once in the New Testament (John 14:22-24 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cLord,\u201d Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn18\">what<\/a> has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn19\">Jesus<\/a> replied, \u201cIf anyone loves me, he will obey <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsei2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn20\">take up<\/a> residence with him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. The person who does not love me does not obey <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father\u2019s who sent me.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_all\"><\/a>Choosing <i>obey <\/i>for <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsei2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a> highlighted one aspect of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto act and live in conformity to.\u201d But consider another word of the Lord (John 12:31-33 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.\u201d (Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/07\/17\/funeral-part-2\/#_ftn35\">he was going to<\/a> die) <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/07\/17\/funeral-part-2\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is not readily apparent how to \u201cact and live in conformity to\u201d this word. It is fairly straightforward how \u201cto guard, keep watch over\u201d it; how \u201cto remain alert in anticipation\u201d of it; how \u201cto watch out for the loss of\u201d it and \u201cto inspect\u201d it \u201cclosely\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_impact\"><\/a>What <i>is the judgment of this world<\/i>? Jesus will draw all to Himself. How <i>will the ruler of this world be driven out<\/i>? Jesus will draw all to Himself. What did He mean by: <i>I am lifted up from the earth<\/i>? He <i>said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die <\/i>(<em>e.g.<\/em>, crucifixion). <a id=\"_\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd\"><\/a>The Greek word translated <i>when <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#ean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd<\/a>, <i>if<\/i>. In other words, if Jesus is crucified, He will draw all to Himself. To say He will not draw all to Himself is logically equivalent to saying He was not crucified: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/modus%20tollens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modus tollens<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Keeping this word makes it much easier to obey another in faith (Matthew 28:18-20 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Then Jesus came up and said to them, \u201cAll authority in heaven and on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn25\">earth<\/a> has been given to me <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Therefore<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/04\/26\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-7\/#_Table21\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, teaching them to obey <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> everything I have commanded you.
