This is a continuation of my consideration of \u201c5 Bible Passages That Caused Me to Lose My Faith<\/a>\u201d by Kristi Burke. Her first Bible passage was \u201cRomans 9…the starting point of my deconstruction journey.\u201d1<\/sup><\/a> Though she began with verse 16, I started at the beginning of the chapter to gain some context<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

I’ll pick up where I left off<\/a> (Romans 9:22-24 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

But what if God, willing (\u03b8\u1f73\u03bb\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b8\u03ad\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> to demonstrate (\u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b5\u1f77\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03b5\u03af\u03ba\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em> his wrath (Romans 1:18-32<\/a>)<\/em> and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath prepared<\/a> for destruction? And what if he is willing to make known the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy that he has prepared beforehand for glory\u2014even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? <\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

God’s demonstration of this contrast between the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy <\/em>and his wrath<\/em> on those who prepared themselves for destruction<\/a> offended Ms. Burke: \u201cI was fed one version of god who was a loving father but I’m learning about this completely different god who intentionally creates people to go to hell.\u201d2<\/sup><\/a> If I believed that the Lord’s wish…for all to come to repentance<\/em>3<\/sup><\/a> was subordinate<\/a> to the wishes of every individual, I might be troubled by this, too. Apart from the Lord’s intervention\u2014he has prepared beforehand <\/em>(\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u1f77\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03b5\u03c4\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>) for glory<\/em>\u2014we all share an innate propensity to prepare ourselves for destruction. But I believe that God has consigned<\/a> all people to disobedience so that he may<\/a> show mercy to them all<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a> and that Jesus will draw all<\/a> to Himself.5<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSirs, what must I do to be saved?\u201d<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> the Philippian<\/a> jailer<\/a> asked Paul and Silas (Acts 16:31a NET Table<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n

They replied, \u201cBelieve in the Lord Jesus<\/a> and you will be saved…\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can read this verse as written now, believing that I am saved primarily from my own sinfulness<\/a>. When I believed what I was taught (or imagined I was being taught) in church, I believed that I was saved primarily from hell. I was explicitly instructed to add \u201cbefore you die\u201d as a condition to faith: <\/span><\/p>\n

Believe in the Lord Jesus<\/a> [before you die]<\/em> and you will be saved [from hell].<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I surveyed the 10 occurrences of forms of \u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> in the New Testament (see table<\/a> below). All were translated hell <\/i>in the KJV. Obviously, to be saved from KJV hell<\/i>, one must trust the Lord before one dies. And there was a time I thought KJV hell <\/i>was synonymous with the lake of fire <\/i>of the final judgment (Revelation 20:11-15 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I saw a large white throne and the one who was seated on it<\/a>; the earth and the heaven fled from his presence<\/a>, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the<\/a> great and the<\/a> small, standing before the throne<\/a>. Then books were opened<\/a>, and another book<\/a> was opened<\/a>\u2014the book of life<\/a>. So the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to their deeds [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. The sea gave up the7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> dead that were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the8<\/sup><\/a><\/em> dead that were in them, and each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death<\/a>\u2014the lake of fire<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. If anyone\u2019s name<\/a> was not found written in the book of life, that person was thrown into the lake of fire.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There were 66 occurrences of forms of \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u00f4l<\/i>) in the Masoretic text<\/a> (see table<\/a> below); 31 of them were translated hell <\/i>in the KJV. Most forms of \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc <\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u00f4l<\/i>) in the Masoretic text were translated with forms of \u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> in the Septuagint. Most occurrences of forms of \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u00f4l<\/i>) mirror death as we perceive it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This very human understanding of death corresponds to the euphemism fallen asleep <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77\u03bc\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) as Jesus used it (John 11:11b-15a NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur friend Lazarus has fallen asleep (\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77\u03bc\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03bf\u03b9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em>. Then Jesus elaborated on the resurrection (Luke 20:36, 37 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, they can no16<\/sup><\/a><\/em> longer die (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> because they are equal to angels (\u1f30\u03c3\u1f71\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f30\u03c3\u03ac\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and are sons of God,17<\/sup><\/a><\/em> since they are sons of the resurrection. Jesus went one step further to affirm something about God and those who have died as we perceive death (Luke 20:38 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live before him.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek word translated live<\/em> was \u03b6\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in the present tense. Technically, \u03b6\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> might also indicate the subjunctive mood<\/a>, \u201cfor all may live before him,\u201d but I found no English translation<\/a> other18<\/sup><\/a> than the indicative mood<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

One occurrence (perhaps two) of \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u00f4l<\/em>) in the Masoretic text conveys this idea of living<\/em> (\u03b6\u1f7d\u03bd\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) inhabitants. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Jesus described a rich man in Hades calling out to Abraham (Luke 16:23, 24 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

And in Hades (\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u1f85\u03b4\u1fc3<\/a>)<\/em>, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham<\/a> far off with Lazarus at his side [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. So he called out, \u2018Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue because I am in anguish in this fire.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This survey helped me to understand why eternal life <\/i>wasn’t about living forever when Jesus prayed: Now this is eternal life\u2014that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a> More to the point in this essay, given that even Paul wrote of those who have fallen asleep in Christ<\/i>,20<\/sup><\/a> waiting to rise in the resurrection at the last day<\/i>,21<\/sup><\/a> it focused my attention on the question: <\/a>What gave anyone hope that believing in the Lord Jesus, even before one dies, might save one from KJV hell<\/i>? <\/span><\/p>\n

In an article titled \u201cBe one of the few who has a copy of the Original New Testament!<\/a>\u201d Rev. Bauscher contends: \u201cWhile the apostle Paul was carrying the gospel message to the West \u2014 ‘first to the Jew, then to the Gentile’ \u2014 Thomas was doing the same, except going in the opposite direction . . . to the East. The Church of the East became the largest Christian church of the middle ages, spreading the gospel message and building churches as far away as India and China, with 100 million members. The Muslim conquests and massacres of the 7th \u2013 11th centuries, as well as the Mongol\u2019s destruction of Christians and churches, left very few members of that great church remaining. This is history unknown to most in the West, but eastern Christians have not forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
