<\/a>So I ask<\/i>, Paul began the eleventh chapter of Romans, God has not rejected his people<\/a>, has he?<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> referring to his fellow countrymen<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake<\/i>, he concluded finally, but in regard to election<\/a> they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers. \u00a0For the gifts<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) and the call<\/i> (\u03ba\u03bb\u1fc6\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) of God are irrevocable<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>).3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Just as you<\/a> were formerly disobedient<\/i> (\u1f20\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) to God, but have now received mercy<\/i> (\u1f20\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) due to their disobedience<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>), so they too have now been disobedient<\/i> (\u1f20\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03b8\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in order that, by the mercy<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) shown to you, they too may now<\/a> receive mercy<\/i> [Table<\/a>] (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03b7\u03b8\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>). \u00a0For God has consigned<\/i> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c9<\/a>) all people to disobedience<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) so that he may show mercy<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ae\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) to them all<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

A note<\/a> in the NET acknowledged that them<\/i> \u201chas been supplied for stylistic reasons.\u201d\u00a0 The original Greek reads simply, \u201cto all.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to get involved in a \u201cuniversal salvation\u201d argument.\u00a0 It seems to go nowhere.\u00a0 After throwing Scripture around and philosophical opinions about free will the argument devolves into something like, \u201cWell, I could never believe in a god who sent (or, would not send) anyone to hell.\u201d\u00a0 I know I will trust Him as long as He pours his faithfulness (\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) into me through his Spirit,5<\/sup><\/a> whether He sends or does not send people to hell or not.\u00a0 I do want to consider some of the things about God\u2019s mercy that Paul outlined in Romans 9-11 in a table below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It may be arbitrary on my part to place\u2014God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden<\/i>\u2014exclusively under the Old Covenant, if that is seen as a limit to God\u2019s choosing.\u00a0 My point is simply its logical relationship to I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion<\/i>.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s conclusion\u2014So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/i>\u2014serves then as the logical and justificatory bridge to his New Covenant argument concluding that, God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to\u2026all<\/i>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The word translated consigned<\/em> is \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c9<\/a>) in Greek.\u00a0 Paul used it again when he wrote the Galatians, the scripture imprisoned<\/i> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) everything and everyone under sin so that the promise could be given \u2013 because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ \u2013 to those who believe<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Another form of the same word is found in Luke\u2019s account of the calling of Peter, James and John<\/a>: When they had done this<\/i> [e.g., obeyed Jesus by lowering their nets where he instructed them to lower them], they caught<\/i> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03ba\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03c9<\/a>) so many fish that their nets<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> started to tear<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is an interesting image, all of us, all humanity, caught in his net. \u00a0For God has consigned all people to disobedience<\/i>\u20269<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Like fearful fish we flail frantically to escape from the One who whispers, Stop your striving and recognize that I am God<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I also want to consider the Old Testament precedent for Paul\u2019s reasoning in Romans 11:30 and 31: The word of the Lord came to me<\/i>, Ezekiel the prophet wrote. \u00a0\u201cSon of man, confront Jerusalem with her abominable practices\u2026\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Your older sister was Samaria, who lived north of you with her daughters, and your younger sister, who lived south of you, was Sodom with her daughters [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Have you not copied their behavior and practiced their abominable deeds? \u00a0In a short time you became even more depraved in all your conduct than they were [Table<\/a>]<\/em>! \u00a0As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, your sister Sodom and her daughters never behaved as wickedly as you and your daughters have behaved [Table<\/a>].13<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You have made your sisters appear righteous with all the abominable things you have done <\/i>[Table<\/a>], the Lord continued. \u00a0So now, bear your disgrace, because you have given your sisters reason to justify their behavior. \u00a0Because the sins you have committed were more abominable than those of your sisters; they have become more righteous than you <\/i>[Table<\/a>].14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters<\/i> [Table<\/a>]\u202615<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Like Samaria or Sodom, Paul wrote Gentile believers, that senseless<\/i> nation<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a> chosen for salvation, Just as you<\/a> were formerly disobedient to God, but have now received mercy due to <\/i>[Israel\u2019s] disobedience<\/i>,17<\/sup><\/a> <\/i>because, by<\/i> [Israel\u2019s] transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous<\/i>.18<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters<\/i> will be restored (along with your<\/i> [Jerusalem\u2019s] fortunes among them) <\/i>[Table<\/a>], so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in consoling them <\/i>[Table<\/a>].\u00a0 As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters will be restored to their former status, Samaria and her daughters will be restored to their former status, and you and your daughters will be restored to your former status <\/i>[Table<\/a>].19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So, Paul continued, they <\/i>[Israel] too have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now<\/a> receive mercy<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I will deal with you according to what you have done when you despised your oath by breaking your covenant<\/i>, the Lord said to Jerusalem through Ezekiel. \u00a0Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish a lasting covenant with you<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I will establish my covenant with you<\/i>, the Lord continued, and then you will know that I am the Lord. \u00a0Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent when I make atonement for all you have done, declares the sovereign Lord<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! <\/i>Paul continued. \u00a0How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways!<\/i>\u00a0 For who has known the mind of the Lord<\/i><\/b>, or who has been his counselor? <\/b><\/i>\u00a0Or who has first given to God<\/i><\/b>, that God needs to repay him? <\/b><\/i>\u00a0For from him and through him and to him are all things. \u00a0To him be glory forever! \u00a0Amen<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It causes me to wonder.\u00a0 I assume that all<\/i> in\u2014he may show mercy to\u2026all<\/i>24<\/sup><\/a>\u2014refers to human beings, those born of Adam.\u00a0 But if senseless Gentiles, chosen for salvation to make Israel jealous, reject the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i> to pursue their own righteousness derived<\/i>25<\/sup><\/a> from a select subset of the law and their own religious rules, will that open Christ\u2019s salvation to demons<\/a> and fallen angels?\u00a0 Will senseless Gentiles be resurrected to bear <\/i>[their] disgrace and be ashamed of all <\/i>[they] have done in consoling <\/i>demons and fallen angels?\u00a0 Will the administration of the fullness of the times, to head up all things in Christ<\/i> really mean all<\/i> things? \u2013 the things in<\/a> heaven <\/i>as well as the things on earth<\/a><\/i>26<\/sup><\/a>?<\/p>\n
