This is a continuation of my consideration of \u201c5 Bible Passages That Caused Me to Lose My Faith<\/a>\u201d by Kristi Burke. Her first Bible passage was \u201cRomans 9…the starting point of my deconstruction journey.\u201d1<\/sup><\/a> Though she began with verse 16, I started at the beginning of the chapter to gain some context<\/a>. In another essay<\/a> I asked: \u201cWhat gave anyone hope that believing in the Lord Jesus, even before one dies, might save one from KJV hell<\/i><\/a>?\u201d Here, I’ll begin to consider the three Scriptures that came to mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Jesus was crucified: Two other criminals were also led away to be executed with him<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> (Luke 23:39-43 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the criminals who was hanging there railed at him, saying, \u201cAren\u2019t<\/a> you the Christ? Save yourself and us!\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em> But the other rebuked3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> him, saying,4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cDon\u2019t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.\u201d Then he said, \u201cJesus,5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> remember me6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> when you come in your kingdom.\u201d And Jesus7<\/sup><\/a><\/em> said to him, \u201cI tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Greek words translated in paradise <\/i>were \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u1f77\u03c3\u1ff3<\/a> (a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>). This phrase would be quite familiar as a reference to the garden (NET: orchard<\/i>) in Eden to anyone reading the Septuagint<\/a>. The only other occurrence of this phrase in the New Testament is found in Jesus’ (Revelation 1:12-20<\/a>) letter to the church at Ephesus (Revelation 2:7 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will permit him to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise8<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of God.\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The verb is <\/i>was \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> in the present tense. Paul wrote about a paradise <\/i>located in the third heaven <\/i>(2 Corinthians 12:2-4 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up to the third (\u03c4\u03c1\u1f77\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03c1\u03af\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> heaven (\u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, a form of \u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. And I know that this man (whether in the body or apart from9<\/sup><\/a> the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up into paradise (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f71\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and heard things too sacred (\u1f04\u03c1\u03c1\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f04\u1fe4\u1fe5\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to be put into words,10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> things that a person is not permitted to speak.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

More important, perhaps, than the phrase \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u1f77\u03c3\u1ff3<\/a> was the phrase \u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f10\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u1f14\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>: you will be with me<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> (literally: \u201cwith me you will be\u201d). This clause is preceded by the adverb \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>. So, does \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> modify \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> (NET: I tell<\/i>), which immediately precedes it, or \u1f14\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The first sounds awkward in English, as if Jesus might not tell the truth yesterday<\/em> or tomorrow<\/em>. But I can understand it as (because of your request today) you will be with me in paradise sometime in the future. The verb \u1f14\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> is in the future tense. Or, perhaps Jesus meant: \u201cwith me you will be (later) today.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

I surveyed every occurrence of \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> in the New Testament (see table<\/a> below). A story Jesus told proved to be very enlightening:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, \u2018Son, go and work in the vineyard<\/a> today.\u201912<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here, two verbs were separated by \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>: \u1f55\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u1f51\u03c0\u03ac\u03b3\u03c9<\/a>) and \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> (a form of \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u03ac\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>). Clearly, the man <\/i>wanted his Son <\/i>to go today <\/i>and to work today<\/i>. I didn’t need to choose between these verbs. But both are in the present tense.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was only one occurrence of \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> in Mark’s Gospel, but one of the verbs it modified is in the future tense:<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus said to [Peter]<\/em>, \u201cI tell you the truth, today13<\/sup><\/a><\/em>\u2014this very night14<\/sup><\/a><\/em>\u2014before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.15<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By ignoring \u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> and the word placement of \u03c3\u1f7a<\/a>, the NET translators developed an English translation that is identical to: I tell you the truth, today<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bc\u1f75\u03bd<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) in Luke 23:43<\/a>. The KJV translation\u2014That this day<\/i>\u2014accounts for \u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>. \u201cTruly I tell you, that you today…\u201d is a more literal translation of the NET parallel Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that Jesus\/Matthew have given me permission to understand that \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> can modify two verbs simultaneously, I’m untroubled by its proximity to \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> (NET: I tell<\/i>; KJV: I say<\/i>). My attitude now is, \u201cOf course, Jesus told Peter the truth today<\/i>, not tomorrow<\/i> or four weeks ago<\/i>. Why burden him with such knowledge prematurely?\u201d Nor do the three words interposed between \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> and \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> dissuade me from understanding that the latter modifies the former. <\/span><\/p>\n

If the prepositional phrase \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u1f00\u03bc\u03c0\u03b5\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b9<\/a> (NET: in the vineyard<\/i>) were interposed between \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd <\/a> and \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, I wouldn’t assume that Jesus meant, \u201cGo today in the vineyard and work sometime in the future,\u201d because \u1f10\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> is in the present tense. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek word \u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>, translated you will deny<\/i> in Mark 14:30, is in the future tense. But here, Jesus\/Mark have made it abundantly clear that the future predicted by \u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03bd\u1f75\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> is later than now <\/i>yet still today<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The verb \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f71\u03b2\u03b7\u03b8\u03b9<\/a> (NET: come down<\/i>) is also in the 2nd<\/sup> aorist tense<\/a>, while \u03b4\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a> (NET: must<\/i>) is in the present tense, and \u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (NET: stay<\/i>) is in the aorist tense<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was persuaded that neither the placement of the adverb \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> nor the future tense of the verb \u1f14\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> prohibited me from understanding Jesus’ words as a promise to the other criminal<\/i><\/a> (Luke 23:43<\/a>) that he would be with Jesus in paradise that very day. For good measure I surveyed the occurrences of \u1f00\u03bc\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> in Luke’s Gospel (see table<\/a> below). <\/span><\/p>\n

Only one of six occurrences in the phrase I tell you the truth <\/i>(KJV: verily I say unto you<\/i>) was followed by \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>. That confirms for me that Jesus and Luke were content to let the phrase stand alone. In other words, though \u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> clearly modifies \u03bb\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> (NET: I tell<\/i>; KJV: I say<\/i>) in Luke 23:43, it’s reason for being there was \u1f14\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a> (NET: you will be<\/i>; KJV: shalt thou be<\/i>). If one believes in the Lord Jesus before one dies, today you will be with me in paradise,16<\/sup><\/a> should give one hope to be saved even from KJV hell<\/i><\/a> (\u1f85\u03b4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to take some time here to look a little more into Jesus’ interaction with Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10 NET). <\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. Now a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector and was17<\/sup><\/a><\/em> rich<\/a>. He was trying to get a look at Jesus, but being a short man he could not see over the crowd. So he ran on ahead18<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and climbed up into a sycamore tree19<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to see him because20<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jesus was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to that place, he looked up21<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and said to him, \u201cZacchaeus, come down quickly because I must stay at your house today.\u201d So he came down quickly and welcomed Jesus joyfully. And when the people saw it, they all22<\/sup><\/a><\/em> complained, \u201cHe has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.\u201d But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, \u201cLook, Lord, half23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!\u201d Then Jesus said to him, \u201cToday (\u03c3\u1f75\u03bc\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> salvation has come to this household because he too is a son of Abraham! For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus described Himself as the Son of Man <\/i>[who] came to seek and to save the lost <\/i>(\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03c9\u03bb\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>). This is a participle of the verb \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> in the perfect tense<\/a>. Luke also wrote (Luke 15:1-4 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming to hear him. But the Pharisees24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and the experts in the law were complaining, \u201cThis man welcomes sinners and eats with them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who are the lost <\/i>but those who have prepared <\/i>[themselves<\/a>] for destruction<\/i>?25<\/sup><\/a> The Greek words translated for destruction<\/i> were \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u1f7d\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ce\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>, the noun form associated with<\/a> the verb \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03bb\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s almost impossible to consider the story of Zacchaeus, a rich man, without recalling Jesus’ words to his disciples (Matthew 19:23b-26 NET):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI tell you the truth, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven! Again I say, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.\u201d The<\/a> disciples were greatly astonished when they heard this and said, \u201cThen who can be saved?\u201d Jesus looked at them and replied, \u201cThis is impossible for mere humans, but for God all things are<\/a> possible\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I hear the story of Zacchaeus and the story of the criminal on the cross as examples of God’s power to do the impossible<\/em>. Preparing for this essay I found an article by Melissa Henderson<\/a> on Christianity.com<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cWhy Did Jesus Tell the Thief ‘Today You Will Be With Me in Paradise’?<\/a>.\u201d It struck me that, though Ms. Henderson and Ms. Burke each had her own perspective and agenda, both referenced Christianity<\/em>, that particular brand of human abstraction called Christianity <\/i>with which I am most familiar. <\/span><\/p>\n

As Christians, we know there is an opportunity to acknowledge our sins, repent from those sins, and ask God for forgiveness. The two thieves on the cross each took a different path. One man chose to mock and ridicule and not believe Jesus. The other man chose to believe and have faith. The Bible doesn\u2019t describe how this man came to believe. Did he have an earlier experience with Jesus that wasn\u2019t recorded? Did the man who asked Jesus to remember Him silently confess and ask God to come into his life? Those details aren\u2019t shared…<\/span><\/span>
\nThe thief was ready to change his ways, even at the last moment…<\/span><\/span>
\nThe thief was saved through repentance, not through work. Salvation is a personal decision.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n		Up until the point that I read and studied and chewed on the words in Romans 9, I believed in a god who created all people, gave them free will and that he wanted all people to be saved but he couldn’t violate their free will to save them. And that it was the most loving thing he could do to give people freedom. And within that freedom they could either choose him and go to heaven or they could reject him and go to hell. And that would be entirely their choice.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Paul and Silas didn’t say, \u201cBelieve in a particular brand of human abstraction called Christianity <\/i>and you will be saved\u2026\u201d26<\/sup><\/a> And Jesus was a bit more forthcoming on \u201chow this man came to believe\u201d than Ms. Henderson shared:<\/span><\/p>\n

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him<\/i>…27<\/sup><\/a> It is written in the prophets, \u2018And they will all be taught by<\/a> God <\/i>[see table<\/a>].\u2019 Everyone<\/a> who hears<\/a> and learns from the Father comes to me<\/a><\/i>.28<\/sup><\/a> And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself<\/i>.29<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
