The only way I know how to understand that there was \u201cnothing true<\/a>\u201d in Eliphaz’s argument is to compare it to other Scriptures. I’ll spend some time here on \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>) (see table<\/a> below).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here, in the Masoretic text it becomes clear that Eliphaz used essentially the same word, \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b7\u05a3\u05ea<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>), for the roaring of the lion <\/i>that Job used for his own roarings <\/i>or groanings<\/i>: \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05bd\u05d9<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>). Though the Septuagint doesn’t necessarily corroborate \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05bd\u05d9<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>) here, Job was in pretty good company.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here, in the Masoretic text David used \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b8\u05ea\u05b4\u05bd\u05d9<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>), my roaring <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and I groan <\/i>(NET). Again, the translators of the Septuagint had a different interpretation: \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03c9\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, of my transgressions <\/i>(BLB, Elpenor). Here in another psalm of David, \u05d1\u05bc\u059c\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b8\u05ea\u05b4\u0597\u05d9<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>), through my roaring <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV) and while I groaned in pain <\/i>(NET), was translated \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u03b5<\/a> in the Septuagint, from my crying <\/i>(BLB, Elpenor). The verb \u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> is an infinitive form of \u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto cry out, call out, call aloud; to bray (sound of a donkey); to croak.\u201d I doubt it implies tears as much as complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NET translators’ understanding, that keeping silence is a refusal to confess sin, is intriguing. The roaring of the lion<\/i>…[is] broken<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> would seem then to use Job’s own word \u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05bd\u05d9<\/a> (\u0161\u1d4a’\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>)2<\/sup><\/a> against him, Eliphaz’s implication being that God was \u201cbreaking\u201d Job’s refusal to confess his sin through intense suffering. The Hebrew word translated are broken <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV, NET) was \u05e0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> (n\u0101\u1e6fa\u02bf<\/i>), used only here in the Masoretic text. It was translated \u1f10\u03c3\u03b2\u1f73\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a singular form of \u03c3\u03b2\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> in the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n

I typed \u201cis \u05e0\u05ea\u05e2\u05d5 singular or plural\u201d into the search bar in Microsoft Bing and got \u201cThe Hebrew word \u05e0\u05ea\u05e2\u05d5 is plural\u201d as a response, but \u1f10\u03c3\u03b2\u1f73\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> gave me pause. Is \u05e0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> (n\u0101\u1e6fa\u02bf<\/i>) plural because the word translated the teeth <\/i>(\u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u0596\u05d9<\/a>) in the Masoretic text is plural, or because the roaring<\/i>…and the voice<\/i>…and the teeth<\/i>…are broken<\/i>? Clearly, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint understood the final clause of Job 4:10 as a reference to \u03b3\u03b1\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, a singular noun: \u201carrogance, pride, exultation, boasting; something that awakens a sense of pride.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, if Eliphaz implied that Job suffered from his refusal to confess sin or his arrogance, he was wrong about the Lord and wrong about Job (Job 1:6-12<\/a>; 2:1-6<\/a>). Does this qualify as nothing true<\/a><\/i>3<\/sup><\/a>? I’ll keep going. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This is addressed, not to a man refusing to confess a secret sin but, to a nation that has cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a> His first strike was against the mountains: and the mountains were troubled, and their carcasses were as dung in the midst of the way<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a> This poetic description of relatively distant volcanic eruptions or nearer earthquakes6<\/sup><\/a> and rock slides probably killed people, but the blocks and bombs, detritus and debris were mostly the size of dung, maybe manure piles. <\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, the Lord made it difficult for the people to continue in their ways (Isaiah 1:2-20<\/a>) through their streets. But everyone \u201cknows\u201d that volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and rock slides are \u201cnatural\u201d phenomena that have \u201cnothing to do with communication\u201d from their Creator. So, Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This is too provocative to pass by without comment. The translators of the NET and NETS couldn’t bring themselves to have the Lord hiss<\/i>. Both \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05a5\u05e8\u05b7\u05e7<\/a> (\u0161\u0101raq<\/i>) and \u03c3\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>, can be translated whistle<\/i> (NETS) or he whistles<\/i> (NET). To the reader of Job (Job 1:6-12<\/a>; 2:1-6<\/a>) the word hiss <\/i>in the poetic prophecy of Isaiah implies the means by which the Lord lifts a signal flag for a distant nation<\/i>: He gave leave for Satan to do what he is ever eager to do to the Lord’s people. But at first glance, the Lord’s promise through Zechariah to gather his redeemed people seems to call this interpretation into question.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

In the Masoretic text this sounds like the Babylonian conquest of Judah and Jerusalem (2 Kings 25:1-21<\/a>). In the Septuagint it seems like a reference to the Assyrians failed attempt (2 Kings 19:35-37<\/a>) to take Jerusalem after they captured the northern kingdom of Israel (2 Kings 17<\/a>). So, while that might qualify as The roaring of the lion <\/i>[e.g., the Assyrian army]…[is] broken<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> (if Eliphaz actually meant to say that the roaring <\/i>is broken<\/i>), it would still refer to an army rather than an individual. This reference to Zedekiah (2 Kings 24:20-25:7<\/a>) comes closest to what I hear Eliphaz threatening Job, but he did not accuse Job of this: And he prowled in his boldness and laid waste their cities, and made the land desolate, and the fullness of it, by the voice of his roaring<\/em>.10<\/sup><\/a> If someone were to argue that Ezekiel figuratively addressed all of the disobedient kings of Israel as well as their people in the person of one king of Judah, I wouldn’t raise any objections. Whether Zechariah referred to the howling of princes whose land was devastated or the roar of actual lions in a depopulated region matters very little to my understanding of Eliphaz’s accusation. Though his words and images conjure the flavor and aroma of Scriptures, Eliphaz flung them at Job with no knowledge<\/a> of the actual situation. There was nothing true in his accusations despite his evocative words: nothing true about God and nothing true of Job. And my religious mind<\/a> was fooled<\/a> in the past because it lacked the patience<\/a> to pursue his arguments in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n
