The verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krazein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> is an infinitive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kr.html#krazw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c1\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto cry out, call out, call aloud; to bray (sound of a donkey); to croak.\u201d I doubt it implies tears as much as complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The NET translators&#8217; understanding, that keeping silence is a refusal to confess sin, is intriguing. <i>The roaring of the lion<\/i>&#8230;[is] <i>broken<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/03\/nothing-true-part-6\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> would seem then to use Job&#8217;s own word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7581\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05d2\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05bd\u05d9<\/a> (<i>\u0161\u1d4a&#8217;\u0101\u1e21\u00e2<\/i>)<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/03\/nothing-true-part-6\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> against him, Eliphaz&#8217;s implication being that God was \u201cbreaking\u201d Job&#8217;s refusal to confess his sin through intense suffering. The Hebrew word translated <i>are broken <\/i>(Tanakh, KJV, NET) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5421\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> (<i>n\u0101\u1e6fa\u02bf<\/i>), used only here in the Masoretic text. It was translated <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esbesqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03b2\u1f73\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a singular form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sb.html#sbennumi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b2\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03c5\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> in the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I typed \u201cis \u05e0\u05ea\u05e2\u05d5 singular or plural\u201d into the search bar in Microsoft Bing and got \u201cThe Hebrew word \u05e0\u05ea\u05e2\u05d5 is plural\u201d as a response, but <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esbesqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03b2\u1f73\u03c3\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> gave me pause. Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h5421\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8\u05bd\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc<\/a> (<i>n\u0101\u1e6fa\u02bf<\/i>) plural because the word translated <i>the teeth <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h8127\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05b5\u0596\u05d9<\/a>) in the Masoretic text is plural, or because the <i>roaring<\/i>&#8230;<i>and the voice<\/i>&#8230;<i>and the teeth<\/i>&#8230;<i>are broken<\/i>? Clearly, the rabbis who translated the Septuagint understood the final clause of Job 4:10 as a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gauriama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03b1\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03b1\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>, a singular noun: \u201carrogance, pride, exultation, boasting; something that awakens a sense of pride.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Still, if Eliphaz implied that Job suffered from his refusal to confess sin or his arrogance, he was wrong about the Lord and wrong about Job (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Job+1:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Job 1:6-12<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Job+2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2:1-6<\/a>). But everyone \u201cknows\u201d that volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and rock slides are \u201cnatural\u201d phenomena that have \u201cnothing to do with communication\u201d from their Creator. Though his words and images conjure the flavor and aroma of Scriptures, Eliphaz flung them at Job with <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+4:5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no knowledge<\/a> of the actual situation. There was nothing true in his accusations despite his evocative words: nothing true about God and nothing true of Job. And my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/15\/introduction\/\">religious mind<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2023\/03\/17\/nothing-true-part-1\/#_complaint\">was fooled<\/a> in the past because it <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lacked the patience<\/a> to pursue his arguments in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ll continue with this in another essay.
