Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/22\/the-day-of-the-lord-part-8\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> I&#8217;ll begin with a <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/John+11:42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">request<\/a> John recorded that Jesus&#8217; made of his Father (John 17:15 pause here a moment to address the NET translators&#8217; objection (NET <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+John+5:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note 50<\/a>) to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/gen.html#gennhqeis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u1f76\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ek.html#ek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03ba<\/a> <a [Jesus] protects him [the Christian].\u201d This is a popular interpretation, and is certainly possible grammatically. Yet the introduction of a reference to Jesus in this context is sudden; to be unambiguous the author could have mentioned the \u201cSon of God\u201d here, or used the pronoun \u1f10\u03ba\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2 (ekeinos) as a reference to Jesus as he consistently does elsewhere in 1 John. This interpretation, while possible, seems in context highly unlikely.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As I mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/14\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-10\/#_distinguish\">another essay<\/a>, the NET translators&#8217; confused <i>everyone who has been begotten of God does not sin <\/i>with \u201cthe Christian.\u201d Listen to how differently John addressed \u201cthe Christian\u201d (1 John 1:8-2:2 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">John had very high expectations for <i>My little children <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tek.html#teknia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u03b5\u03ba\u03bd\u1f77\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mo.html#mou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>): <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html#mh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ama.html#amarthte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03bc\u1f71\u03c1\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (<i>that you may not sin<\/i>) is a purpose clause in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>. There are probably more uses of the genitive case than I can glean from these short definitions, but this seems to ignore the genitive case and treat autou as if it were in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#ACCUSATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accusative case<\/a>. I wondered. If John&#8217;s Gospel were written by a twenty-something John, I might accept that, but every indication is that it was written by the elder John who not only spent his youth with Jesus but enjoyed a lifetime with the indwelling Holy Spirit, making sense of those years. And what of the Holy Spirit? I decided to look deeper than mere occurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Hasn\u2019t Moses<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/22\/the-day-of-the-lord-part-8\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <i>given you the law? That sounds ridiculous on the face of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jewish leaders were all about doing the law. Of course, one of the more salient features of the Gospels is that Jewish leaders were \u201call about doing the law\u201d in much the same way I was all about doing <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/14\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-10\/#_compliance\"><i>compliance<\/i><\/a>, to minimize my experience of being screamed at, to maximize my experience of being thought of and spoken of well, all for my praise and my glory. And Jesus was never all about looking at things \u201con the face of it\u201d but on the heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was past time to take <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ex.html#ex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be<\/a> more seriously: Jesus said to Jewish leaders, \u201cnothing out of you\u201d or \u201cfrom within you does the law.\u201d In other words, nothing out of them or from within them loved God or their neighbor with <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the love God supplies<\/a> through his own indwelling Holy Spirit (Mark 12:28-31 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now one of the experts in the law came and heard them debating. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn8\">When he saw<\/a> that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, \u201cWhich commandment is the most important <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn9\">of all<\/a>?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn10\">Jesus<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn11\">answered<\/a>, \u201cThe most <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn12\">important<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn13\">is<\/a>: \u2018Listen, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/09\/08\/atonement-part-5\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. But <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_D._Mounce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Mounce<\/a> answered my concern in his article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billmounce.com\/monday-with-mounce\/the-aorist-so-much-more-past-tense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Aorist is so much more than a past tense<\/a>\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constantinecampbell.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Con Campbell\u2019s<\/a> word picture of the aorist. You are in a helicopter over the parade, looking at the parade as a whole. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buist_M._Fanning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buist Fanning<\/a> talks about seeing the action from the outside as a whole rather than from inside the action (i.e., being part of the parade).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Because this is the basic genius of the aorist, it can have a phenomenally wide range of usage. You can be looking at the action as a whole but paying special attention to the beginning (\u201cingressive\u201d) or to the end (\u201cconsummative\u201d). It can describes [sic] something that simply is regardless of any time reference (\u201cgnomic\u201d).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But my favorite is to [sic] proleptic (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/17\/romans-part-27\/#sdfootnote6sym\">futuristic<\/a>) use of the aorist. Because time is secondary, the aorist can describe a future event and emphasize the certainty of the action. It is not a common usage, but it does show how we need to keep the idea of \u201ctime\u201d in its proper place.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, Jesus did not refer to Judas Iscariot any more or any less than He referred to me or anyone or everyone else.
