<\/a>Here I continue to see the Lord cultivating the fear<\/i> that is a conviction to act in accordance with his word<\/a> in Israel.\u00a0 It happened at midnight \u2013 the Lord attacked all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the prison, and all the firstborn of the cattle<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0But the plague of the firstborn did not touch the Israelites who heard the word of the Lord and marked their doors with the blood of the Passover lamb: For the Lord will pass through to strike Egypt, and when he sees the blood on the top of the doorframe and the two side posts, then the Lord will pass over the door, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Pharaoh got up in the night, along with all his servants and all Egypt, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no house in which there was not someone dead [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron in the night and said, \u201cGet up, get out from among my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, serve the Lord as you have requested [Table<\/a>]<\/em>! \u00a0Also, take your flocks and your herds, just as you have requested, and leave. \u00a0But bless me also\u201d [Table<\/a>] 3<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And so the descendants of Israel (and others) left Egypt:\u00a0 There were about 600,000 men on foot, plus their dependents <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0A mixed multitude also went up with them, and flocks and herds \u2013 a very large number of cattle<\/i> [Table<\/a>].4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 A note (94<\/a>) in the NET reads: \u201cThe \u2018mixed multitude\u2019 (\u05e2\u05b5\u05e8\u05b6\u05d1 \u05e8\u05b7\u05d1, \u2019erev rav) refers to a great \u2018swarm\u2019 (see a possible cognate in 8:21[17]) of folk who joined the Israelites, people who were impressed by the defeat of Egypt, who came to faith, or who just wanted to escape Egypt (maybe slaves or descendants of the Hyksos). The expression prepares for later references to riffraff who came along.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this context of cultivating a fear of the Lord<\/i> that is a conviction to act in accordance with his word I begin to see a purpose for hardening Pharaoh\u2019s heart (Exodus 14:1-4 NET).<\/p>\n

The Lord spoke to Moses [Table<\/a>]<\/em>: \u201cTell the Israelites that they must turn and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you are to camp by the sea before Baal Zephon opposite it [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Pharaoh will think regarding the Israelites, \u2018They are wandering around confused in the land \u2013 the desert has closed in on them\u2019 [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0I will harden Pharaoh\u2019s heart, and he will chase after them. \u00a0I will gain honor because of Pharaoh and because of all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.\u201d \u00a0So this is what they did [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It happened as the Lord promised Moses (Exodus 14:5-7 NET):<\/p>\n

When it was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people, and the king and his servants said, \u201cWhat in the world have we done? \u00a0For we have released the people of Israel from serving us!\u201d \u00a0Then he prepared his chariots and took his army with him. \u00a0He took six hundred select chariots, and all the rest of the chariots of Egypt, and officers on all of them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If I am correct in seeing this fear<\/i> that is a conviction to act in accordance with the word of the Lord as the functional equivalent<\/a> in the Old Testament of the fruit of the Spirit<\/i>,5<\/sup><\/a> the desire and the effort <\/i>brought forth by God for the sake of his good pleasure<\/i>,6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 because it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a><\/i>,7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 and the love of God<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a> <\/i>that is the fulfillment of the law<\/i>,9<\/sup><\/a> then the contemporary Gentile response to the events of Exodus is telling.\u00a0 It is a clear revelation of the \u03b1\u03c3\u03b5\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a> in human hearts, the ungodliness<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c3\u03ad\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1<\/a>) and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness<\/i>;10<\/sup><\/a> namely, the learned consensus that the Exodus<\/a> didn\u2019t happen as described in the Bible.\u00a0 It is difficult to believe that God would do such things for anyone (the descendents of Israel), let alone for everyone (For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy<\/a> to them all<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a>).<\/p>\n

But orchestrating the events to cultivate such a fear<\/i> could have the opposite effect, creating a fear<\/i> that caused Israel to flee, in their hearts if not with their feet (Exodus 14:10-12 NET).<\/p>\n

When Pharaoh got closer, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified (<\/em>y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>The Israelites cried out to the Lord [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, and they said to Moses, \u201cIs it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the desert? \u00a0What in the world have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? [Table<\/a>]<\/em> \u00a0Isn\u2019t this what we told you in Egypt, \u2018Leave us alone so that we can serve the Egyptians, because it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!\u2019\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The rabbis who translated the Septuagint<\/a> used \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> (a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) here.\u00a0 The next occurrence of \u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> in the New Testament is in Matthew\u2019s Gospel when Christ, our Passover lamb<\/i>, [was] sacrificed<\/a><\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Now from noon until three<\/a>, darkness came over all the land <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0At about three<\/a> o\u2019clock Jesus shouted <\/i>[the opening line of Psalm 22<\/a>] with a loud voice\u2026<\/i>\u201cMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me<\/i><\/b>?\u201d [Table<\/a>]13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently some bystanders didn\u2019t know Aramaic (the language of Judah\u2019s Babylonian\/Persian captors and didn\u2019t recognize the Psalm in that ancient tongue:\u00a0Eli, Eli, lema<\/a> sabachthani? <\/i>[8\/19\/2017: For a different take on this see, DID THE MESSIAH SPEAK ARAMAIC OR HEBREW? (PART 2) BY E.A.KNAPP<\/a>]). \u00a0They said, This man is calling for Elijah<\/i>14<\/sup><\/a> (e.g., Eli, Eli<\/i>\u2014My God, My God<\/i>). \u00a0Leave him alone! \u00a0Let\u2019s see if Elijah will come to save him<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. \u00a0Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from16<\/sup><\/a><\/em> top to bottom. \u00a0The earth shook and the rocks were split apart. \u00a0And tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had died were raised17<\/sup><\/a><\/em>\u2026Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified (\u1f10\u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> and said, \u201cTruly this one was God\u2019s Son!\u201d18<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I doubt that the Centurion and his companions on\u00a0Golgotha<\/a> saw the curtain that separated the holy place from the most holy place ripped, though they may have seen or at least heard the commotion afterward.\u00a0 I assume they witnessed the earthquake and the tombs opening.\u00a0 Whether they saw any of the dead come out of their tombs depends on how limiting verse 53 is meant to be taken, They came out of the tombs after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure I can make that kind of determination based only on \u1f10\u03ba<\/a>, which can mean out of<\/i> or away from<\/i>.\u00a0 But whatever they saw and heard frightened them like the Israelites were frightened when they looked up, and there were the Egyptians marching after them<\/i>.<\/p>\n

But Moses, who was privy to God\u2019s plan, said, Do not fear<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>)!<\/i>\u00a0 Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord that he will provide for you today; for the Egyptians that you see today you will never, ever see again<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The word translated fear above was \u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (a form of \u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) in the Septuagint<\/a>.\u00a0 When Jesus\u2019 disciples saw him walking on the water<\/a> they were terrified and said, \u201cIt\u2019s a ghost!\u201d and cried out with fear<\/i>.\u00a0 But immediately<\/a> Jesus spoke to them: \u201cHave courage<\/i> (\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03c3\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>)!\u00a0 It is I.\u00a0 Do not be afraid.\u201d<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Israel crossed the sea on dry ground.\u00a0 The Egyptians were drowned when they attempted to follow.\u00a0 When Israel saw the great power that the Lord had exercised over the Egyptians, they feared<\/i> (y\u00e2r\u00ea\u02bc<\/em>, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc<\/a>) the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And so, for the moment, God had successfully cultivated that combination of faith<\/i> and fear<\/i> that is the functional equivalent of: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved<\/i>,23<\/sup><\/a> and the fruit of the Spirit<\/i>,24<\/sup><\/a> the desire and the effort <\/i>brought forth by God for the sake of his good pleasure<\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 because it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy<\/a><\/i>,26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 and the love of God<\/i>27<\/sup><\/a> that is the fulfillment of the law<\/i>.28<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
