Until I got to verse 8 I completely missed the little one verb promise in the first verse: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7200\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05da\u05bc\u05b8<\/a> (<i>r\u0101&#8217;\u00e2<\/i>), <i>I will show thee <\/i>(Tanakh), and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#soi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deixw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u1f77\u03be\u03c9<\/a> in Greek in the Septuagint, <i>I will show you <\/i>(NETS). The Greek verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deixw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u1f77\u03be\u03c9<\/a> is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dei.html#deiknuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03ba\u03bd\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto show, point out, make known; to explain, prove; to cause to be seen; to point to; to bring to light, display; to demonstrate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So what was it about verse 8 that triggered me to find God&#8217;s promise in verse 1? Abram&#8217;s faithfulness wandering in the promised land day after week after month after year. As I wrote in another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/01\/02\/the-children-of-promise-part-1\/#_grace\">essay<\/a>: \u201cThe enabling grace of God, implicit in his call or command, is manifest among <i>the children of promise <\/i>as obedience to his word.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The writer of Hebrews began his remarks about Abraham with five beautiful words: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kal.html#kaloumenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f08\u03b2\u03c1\u03b1\u1f70\u03bc <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/exel.html#exelqein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be\u03b5\u03bb\u03b8\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>. It is a brilliant shorthand that has taken me a lifetime to begin to understand, mostly through trial and error. The first word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> is a dative form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>: \u201cThe dative is the case of the indirect object, or may also indicate the means by which something is done.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <i>By faith <\/i>is an acceptable translation but it is clearly shorthand for, by <i>being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek word translated as a passive verb phrase <i>being sure <\/i>was actually a noun, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upos.html#upostasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f79\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>: \u201csustenance, support, subsistence; foundation (of a building); substantial nature, essence, actual being, reality; possessions, property; situation, condition; existence; rebellion, resistance; good chance of (something happening); realization; mutually agreed tariff; troops stationed at a military base.\u201d I understand why the author chose it: <i>For this reason I tell you<\/i>, Jesus said, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote22sym\">whatever<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote23sym\">you pray<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote24sym\">and<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote25sym\">ask for<\/a>, believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/07\/forgiveness\/#sdfootnote26sym\">you have received<\/a> it, and it will be yours<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> But I can also see that if anyone understood the writer of Hebrews to be suggesting that <i>faith <\/i>is the \u201csubstantial nature, essence, actual being, reality,\u201d then James&#8217; <i>faith was perfected by works<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> was a welcome corrective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The NET translators&#8217; passive verb phrase <i>being convinced of <\/i>was another noun in Greek, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ele.html#elegcos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03bb\u03b5\u03b3\u03c7\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>: \u201crebuttal, refutation, reproach; proof, proving; act of questioning; conviction (of a sinner); reproof, censure, correction; something that deserves open criticism.\u201d This noun coupled with the passive verb phrase chosen by the NET translators implies a long history of divine instruction from unbelief to disbelief to faith, as does Abram&#8217;s response to the Lord&#8217;s simple promise: <i>I will show you<\/i>:<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> It makes my question seem unnecessary, but I&#8217;ll ask it anyway: was this <i>faith<\/i>, Abraham&#8217;s certainty and conviction, something which originated with Abraham, or Abram?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Consider James again: <i>You see that his faith was working together with his works and his faith was perfected by works<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> The Greek words translated <i>his faith<\/i>\u00a0were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/h.html#h5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f21<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>; literally \u201cthe faith.\u201d Perhaps \u201cthe faithfulness\u201d is a better way to understand it: <i>You see that <\/i>the faithfulness <i>was working together with his works and <\/i>the faithfulness <i>was perfected by works<\/i>. In other words, Abraham&#8217;s acts of obedience to God&#8217;s word brought faithfulness to its intended conclusion. So, if the apparent <i>faithfulness <\/i>of Abraham didn&#8217;t originate with Abraham, then from what place or what source did it originate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>For from him and through him and to him are all things<\/i>, Paul wrote of God. <i>To him be glory forever! Amen<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> This is an important key to understanding the Scriptures. And so, I will understand <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> here as shorthand for \u201cBy God&#8217;s faithfulness.\u201d The next word in the writer of Hebrews&#8217; shorthand was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kal.html#kaloumenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is a passive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kal.html#kalew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cGrammatical voice indicates whether the subject is the performer of the action of the verb (active voice), or the subject is the recipient of the action (passive voice). If the subject of the sentence is being acted upon, then the verb is referred to as being in the passive voice.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> The translation, <i>when he was called<\/i>, is fine and adding Paul&#8217;s key to the Scriptures, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phrases_from_The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life, the Universe and Everything<\/a> is not anything I&#8217;ve ever heard debated: <i>when he was called <\/i>by God: \u201cBy God&#8217;s faithfulness, when he was called by God, Abraham (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ab.html#abraam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f08\u03b2\u03c1\u03b1\u1f70\u03bc<\/a>)&#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fourth word is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakouw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, translated <i>obeyed <\/i>in the NET. That feels like a short circuit to me. This whole word string is an admirable description of the <i>obedience of faith <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/upa.html#upakohn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>) that Paul considered the hallmark of his apostleship (Romans 1:5 NET): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Through <em>[<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+1:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus Christ our Lord<\/a><em>]<\/em> we have received grace and our apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word string, <i>to bring about the<\/i>,<i> <\/i>may be a lot to ask of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eis.html#eis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a>. I would be willing to modify it: <i>grace and&#8230;apostleship<\/i> \u201cinto\u201d or \u201cunto\u201d or \u201cfor\u201d <i>obedience of faith<\/i> or \u201cfaith&#8217;s obedience.\u201d What I&#8217;m calling a \u201cshort circuit,\u201d leaping to <i>obeyed <\/i>as a translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> alone, is what adults do to children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_obedience\"><\/a>Adults have neither time nor patience for children to learn the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit of the Spirit<\/a>, or to walk or <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live by the Spirit<\/a>, the <i>obedience of faith<\/i> in other words. Adults expect to be obeyed immediately in the flesh. And that&#8217;s how children learn to obey\u2014or not. It&#8217;s quite a culture shock if they bring this kind of \u201cobedience in the flesh\u201d to Jesus and He calls them <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/\"><i>actors<\/i><\/a>, pretending to righteousness. For my purposes in this essay I&#8217;ll translate <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/uph.html#uphkouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03c0\u1f75\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> as <i>he listened<\/i>. It believes, or wants me to believe, that all that transpired for Abram was the result, or should have been the result, of Abram&#8217;s faith or faithfulness rather than God&#8217;s (since I refuse to be thrown off the scent this time as Abram prospers <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_pimp\">pimping<\/a> his beautiful wife). But the <i>religious mind <\/i>tips its hand here. I should probably say plainly that what I am calling the <i>religious mind <\/i>is a masquerade, an act, put on by <i>the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> It would prefer to persuade me to believe that nothing transpired for Abram, because Abram as revealed in the Bible never existed, because the Bible lies about everything that&#8217;s written in it, especially God, because there is no God but <i>me<\/i>\u2014<i>e.g.<\/i>, <i>the old man<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If I pay attention instead to the land God promised: <i>I will show you<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/27\/the-children-of-promise-part-2\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> what does that <i>land <\/i>look like? This becomes another confirmation that <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> truly is the writer of Hebrew&#8217;s shorthand for \u201cBy God&#8217;s faithfulness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I see something else, too (Romans 9:22, 23 NET).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But what if God, willing to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath prepared for destruction?
