{"id":237,"date":"2012-05-28T20:03:55","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T14:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=237"},"modified":"2023-05-09T10:19:24","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T15:19:24","slug":"ezra-and-divorce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=237","title":{"rendered":"Ezra and Divorce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have gone through similar changes in my response to Paul as those I <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/17\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-5\/\">mentioned<\/a> in response to Jesus.\u00a0 There was a time when I thought Paul had written extraordinary claims, statements so exaggerated that they should never be taken literally or at face value.\u00a0 Not the least of these was Romans 3:20 (NET), For <em>no one is declared righteous before <\/em>[God] <em>by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The story at the end of Ezra was one of my <em>proof texts<\/em>, how wrong Paul had gotten it, for the men who had married foreign wives among the exiles who returned to Israel were certainly <em>declared righteous before <\/em>[God] <em>by the works of the law<\/em> (Ezra 10:2-4, 7, 8, 12-17 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, from the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra: \u201cWe have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the local peoples.\u00a0 Nonetheless, there is still hope for Israel in this regard. \u00a0Therefore let us enact a covenant with our God to send away all these women and their offspring, in keeping with your counsel, my lord, and that of those who respect the commandments of our God.\u00a0 And let it be done according to the law <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/06\/jedidiah-part-3\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>)<\/em>. \u00a0Get up, for this matter concerns you. We are with you, so be strong and act decisively!\u201d\u2026 A proclamation was circulated throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles were to be assembled in Jerusalem. \u00a0Everyone who did not come within three days would thereby forfeit all his property, in keeping with the counsel of the officials and the elders. Furthermore, he himself would be excluded from the assembly of the exiles\u2026. All the assembly replied in a loud voice: \u201cWe will do just as you have said! \u00a0However, the people are numerous and it is the rainy season.\u00a0 We are unable to stand here outside. \u00a0Furthermore, this business cannot be resolved in a day or two, for we have sinned greatly in this matter. \u00a0Let our leaders take steps on behalf of all the assembly. Let all those in our towns who have married foreign women come at an appointed time, and with them the elders of each town and its judges, until the hot anger of our God is turned away from us in this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah were against this, assisted by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite. \u00a0So the exiles proceeded accordingly. \u00a0Ezra the priest separated out by name men who were leaders in their family groups. \u00a0They sat down to consider this matter on the first day of the tenth month, and on the first day of the first month they finished considering all the men who had married foreign wives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In time, though, I had to change my mind about the meaning of this story in Ezra, about Paul and about the reliability of Romans 3:20.\u00a0 I had my facts more or less correct.\u00a0 What I had forgotten to consider was God\u2019s response to those facts.\u00a0 I found that response eventually in the book of the prophet Malachi.\u00a0 Here are the two passages side by side:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a id=\"_divorce\"><\/a>The Facts<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\n<p align=\"center\">God\u2019s Response to Those Facts<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">\u2026the leaders approached me and said, \u201cThe people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residents who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/27\/adultery-in-the-law-part-3\/#_Table31\">Table<\/a>].\u00a0 Indeed, they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has become intermingled with the local residents. Worse still, the leaders and the officials have been at the forefront of all of this [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/27\/adultery-in-the-law-part-3\/#_Table33\">Table<\/a>]!\u201d When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and my robe and ripped out some of the hair from my head and \u00a0 beard.\u00a0 Then I sat down, quite devastated. \u00a0Everyone who held the words of the God of \u00a0 Israel in awe gathered around me because of the unfaithful acts of the people of the exile.\u00a0 Devastated, I continued to sit there until the evening offering.\u00a0 At the time of the evening offering I got up from my self-abasement, with my tunic and robe torn, and then dropped to my \u00a0 knees and spread my hands to the Lord my God.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Ezra 9:1-5 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Judah has become disloyal, and unspeakable sins have been committed in Israel and Jerusalem.\u00a0 For Judah has profaned the holy things that the Lord loves and has turned to a foreign god (literally, <em>has married the daughter of a foreign god<\/em>) [See <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/28\/ezra-and-divorce\/#_Addendum\">Addendum<\/a> below]!\u00a0 May the Lord cut off from the community of Jacob every last person who does this, as well as the person who presents improper offerings to the Lord who rules over all!<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Malachi 2:11, 12 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself to the ground before the temple of God, a very large crowd of Israelites \u2013 men, women, and children alike \u2013 gathered around him.\u00a0 The people wept loudly.\u00a0 Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, from the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra: \u201cWe weep and groan, because he no longer pays any attention to the offering nor accepts it favorably from you.\u00a0 Yet you ask, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 The Lord is testifying against you on behalf of the wife you married when you were young, to whom you have become unfaithful even though she is your companion and wife by law.\u00a0 No one who has even a small portion of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Spirit<\/a>\u00a0in him does this.\u00a0 What did our \u00a0 ancestor do when seeking a child from God?\u00a0 Be attentive, then, to your own spirit, for one should not be disloyal to the wife he took in his youth.\u00a0 \u201cI hate divorce,\u201d says the Lord God of Israel, \u201cand the one who is guilty of violence,\u201d says the Lord who rules over all.\u00a0 \u201cPay attention to your conscience, and do not be unfaithful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Malachi 2:13-16 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>It is difficult, to say the least, for me to accept that Jesus proposed divorce as a remedy for even <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/27\/adultery-in-the-law-part-3\/\"><em>unlawful marriage<\/em><\/a> in Matthew 5:32 and 19:9.\u00a0 It was, in fact, this new understanding of Ezra (and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/31\/jephthah\/\">Jephthah<\/a> in Judges 10:6-12:7) that first led me to consider what I now call the <em>religious mind<\/em>.\u00a0 (I am too pharisaical myself to have ever seen it initially in the Pharisees in the New Testament.)\u00a0 They were good (relatively speaking) well-intentioned men led astray by their misunderstanding of God.\u00a0 Whether that misunderstanding was stubborn willfulness or honest mistake I\u2019m in no position to judge.\u00a0 Given my own propensity for making the same kind of mistakes, I\u2019m more than willing to be generous and give them the benefit of the doubt.<\/p>\n<p>The enigma of Ezra and Malachi which ends the Old Testament thematically\u2014that God was angered by intermarriage between Israelites and the idolatrous women around them, and equally angered by the self-righteous strategy to send those women and their children away, calling it violence\u2014is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/17\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-5\/\">unraveled<\/a> in the New Testament for those with ears to hear (John 3:3, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table2\">5<\/a>-7 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/25\/romans-part-2\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>\u2026.unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/05\/14\/a-monotonous-cycle-part-2\/#_Table2\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/category\/introduction\/holy-spirit\/\">Spirit<\/a> is spirit. \u00a0Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u201cYou must all be born from above.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Addendum\"><\/a><strong>Addendum:<\/strong> December 6, 2021<br \/>\nThe rabbis who translated the Septuagint did not translate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h1166\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05e2\u05b7\u0596\u05dc<\/a> and
