If senseless<\/a>1<\/sup><\/a> Gentiles, chosen for salvation to make Israel jealous, reject the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i> to pursue their own righteousness derived<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> from a select subset of the law and their own religious rules, will that open Christ\u2019s salvation to demons and fallen angels?<\/p>\n

On the surface of it the question seems absurd to me, too speculative, though I appreciate the symmetry of the pattern<\/a>.\u00a0 My problem, however, is that I remember when I believed that Paul\u2019s \u201ccommandment\u201d\u2014 So you too consider yourselves<\/a> dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus<\/a><\/i>3<\/sup><\/a>\u2014was a pious fiction, a mind game based on the flimsiest of pretexts: Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death<\/a>?<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Now, of course, I believe that Paul\u2019s \u201ccommandment\u201d was a carefully wrought conclusion based on a solid truth.\u00a0 And so I believe that I, too, have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. \u00a0So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. \u00a0I do not set aside God\u2019s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!<\/i>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Furthermore, I now believe that this death facilitates forgiveness and the new resurrected (eternal) life by creating the distinction between me (the new man born of the Spirit) and the sin in my flesh<\/a> (Romans 7:14-20 NET).<\/p>\n

For we know that the law is spiritual \u2013 but I am unspiritual<\/a>, sold into slavery to sin [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For I don\u2019t understand what I am doing. \u00a0For I do not do what I want \u2013 instead, I do what I hate. \u00a0But if I do what I don\u2019t want, I agree that the law is good. \u00a0But now it is no longer me doing it, but<\/a> sin that lives in me [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. \u00a0For I want to do the good, but I cannot<\/a> do it. \u00a0For I do not do the good I want, but<\/a> I do the very evil \u00a0 (\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>I do not want! \u00a0Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but<\/a> sin that lives in me [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As John the Apostle wrote, We know that everyone fathered by God does not sin<\/a>, but God protects the one<\/a> he has fathered, and the evil one<\/i>\u00a0(\u03c0\u03bf\u03bd\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)\u00a0cannot touch him<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 That experience prompts me to keep an open mind and a running account as touch points come up.\u00a0 One of the first things that came to mind was Jesus\u2019 response to the religious leaders\u2019 charge that He blasphemed by claiming to be the Son of God: Is it not written in your law, <\/i>\u2018I<\/a> said, you are gods<\/i><\/b>\u2019?<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

When I wrote about it before<\/a> I focused on verses in Exodus where the Holy Spirit called human judges elohim<\/i> (\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>).8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But Jesus apparently quoted Psalm 82:6 as well.\u00a0 The note (84<\/a>) in the NET reads: \u201cThe problem in this verse concerns the meaning of Jesus\u2019 quotation from Ps 82:6. It is important to look at the OT context: The whole line reads \u2018I say, you are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you.\u2019 Jesus will pick up on the term \u2018sons of the Most High\u2019 in 10:36, where he refers to himself as the Son of God<\/i>. The psalm was understood in rabbinic circles as an attack on unjust judges who, though they have been given the title \u2018gods\u2019 because of their quasi-divine function of exercising judgment, are just as mortal as other men. What is the argument here? It is often thought to be as follows: If it was an OT practice to refer to men like the judges as gods, and not blasphemy, why did the Jewish authorities object when this term was applied to Jesus? This really doesn\u2019t seem to fit the context, however, since if that were the case Jesus would not be making any claim for \u2018divinity\u2019 for himself over and above any other human being \u2013 and therefore he would not be subject to the charge of blasphemy. Rather, this is evidently a case of arguing from the lesser to the greater, a common form of rabbinic argument. The reason the OT judges could be called gods is because they were vehicles of the word of God (cf. 10:35). But granting that premise, Jesus deserves much more than they to be called God. He is the Word incarnate, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world to save the world (10:36). In light of the prologue to the Gospel of John, it seems this interpretation would have been most natural for the author. If it is permissible to call men \u201cgods\u201d because they were the vehicles of the word of God, how much more permissible is it to use the word \u2018God\u2019 of him who is the Word of God?\u201d<\/p>\n

The psalm itself reads (Psalm 82 NET):<\/p>\n

God (<\/em>elohim, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>) <\/em>stands in the assembly of El (<\/em>‘\u0113l, \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc<\/a>)<\/em>; in the midst of the gods (<\/em>elohim, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em> he renders judgment [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0He says, \u201cHow long will you make unjust legal decisions and show favoritism to the wicked? \u00a0(Selah) \u00a0Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless!\u00a0 Vindicate the oppressed and suffering! \u00a0Rescue the poor and needy!\u00a0 Deliver them from the power of the wicked! \u00a0They neither know nor understand.\u00a0 They stumble around in the dark, while all the foundations of the earth crumble [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0I thought,9<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>\u2018You are gods (<\/em>elohim, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em>; all of you are sons of the Most High\u2019 [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0Yet you will die like mortals; you will fall like all the other rulers.\u201d \u00a0Rise up, O God (<\/em>elohim, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em>, and execute judgment on the earth!\u00a0 For you own all the nations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And the note (4<\/a>) in the NET on gods<\/i> reads: \u201cThe present translation assumes that the Hebrew term \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd (\u2019elohim, \u2018gods\u2019) here refers to the pagan gods who supposedly comprise El\u2019s assembly according to Canaanite religion. Those who reject the polemical view of the psalm prefer to see the referent as human judges or rulers (\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd sometimes refers to officials appointed by God, see Exod 21:6; 22:8-9; Ps 45:6) or as angelic beings (\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd sometimes refers to angelic beings, see Gen 3:5; Ps 8:5).\u201d<\/p>\n

In the prophetic Song of Moses we read: They made him jealous with other gods<\/i> (z\u00fbr<\/i>, \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05d6\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>), they enraged him with abhorrent idols<\/i> [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0They sacrificed to demons, not God <\/i>(‘\u0115l\u00f4ha<\/i>, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b7<\/a>), to gods<\/i> (elohim<\/i>, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>) they had not known; to new gods<\/i> (\u1e25\u0101\u1e0f\u0101\u0161<\/i>, \u05d7\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>) who had recently come along, gods<\/i> your ancestors<\/i> (‘\u0101\u1e07<\/i>, \u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b9\u05ea\u05b5\u05d9\u05db\u05b6\u05dd<\/a>) had not known about<\/i> [Table<\/a>].10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul wrote: I mean that what the pagans<\/a> sacrifice<\/a> is<\/a> to demons and not to God<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So I can side with the unbelievers Jesus addressed and believe that Psalm 82 was about Israel\u2019s judges, or I can take the psalm at face value and believe that it was the pagan gods who made unjust legal decisions and showed favoritism to the wicked.<\/p>\n

If God meant to save these demons, these rebellious angels, these fallen sons of the Most High<\/i>, the first step would be that they die like mortals<\/i><\/a> so they could be resurrected to a new life:\u00a0 And the Lord God said, \u201cNow that the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not be allowed to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever\u201d<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> (e.g., immortality corrupted by sin).<\/i><\/p>\n

On the other hand the letter to the Hebrews reads: Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in their humanity, so that through death he could destroy the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. \u00a0For surely his concern <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) is not for angels, but he is concerned <\/i>(\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) for Abraham\u2019s descendants<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Once again death played a pivotal role but God\u2019s \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bd\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> (taking hold to rescue<\/i>) might be limited to human beings here.\u00a0 Of course when I turn that around and say, \u201cHebrews 2:16 limits God\u2019s mercy to human beings,\u201d I feel more like Gollum,14<\/sup><\/a> saying, \u201cIt\u2019s mine! My precious,\u201d than an obedient follower of Jesus, who commanded, Freely you received, freely give<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n
