This essay will be somewhat exploratory because I suspect that there is an idol in here somewhere. I&#8217;m just not entirely sure where as I begin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_company\"><\/a>In a Bible study on the book of James my Pastor quoted from Ephesians (Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For by grace you have been saved through <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn8\">faith<\/a>. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometime later, as we shared a meal, I said that it was nice to hear those verses without the customary caveat. He didn&#8217;t know what I was talking about. I explained that <i>this <\/i>and <i>faith <\/i>were different genders in Greek, and so <i>faith <\/i>was excluded from the phrase <i>not your own doing<\/i>. He had never heard such a thing and pulled up the verses on his phone. I admitted I didn&#8217;t really believe it any more in any practical way but that I had heard it all my life, and that it still came to mind whenever I considered Ephesians 2:8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He said it didn&#8217;t make any sense: yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, translated <i>this<\/i> (ESV), is neuter and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, translated <i>faith <\/i>(ESV), is feminine, but so is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, translated <i>grace <\/i>(ESV). I said I should probably look more deeply into it. So, here I go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> in the text was actually <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, translated <i>by grace <\/i>(ESV) because both words are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm#DATIVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dative case<\/a>. The example cited in <a href=\"https:\/\/ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/nouns1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GREEK NOUNS (Shorter Definitions)<\/a> was, <i>do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> Here <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prose.html#proseuch2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03c7\u1fc7<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/deh.html#dehsei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b5\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> were translated <i>by prayer and <\/i>[by] <i>supplication <\/i>respectively because all are in the dative case. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_gender\"><\/a>The Greek words translated <i>faith <\/i>were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Ephesians+2:8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NET parallel Greek<\/a> text and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.die-bibel.de\/en\/bible\/NA28\/EPH.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NA<sup>28<\/sup><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/textusreceptusbibles.com\/Stephanus\/49\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephanus Textus Receptus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/textusreceptusbibles.com\/GBMT\/49\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Byzantine Majority Text<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> My Pastor was right: If <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> is excluded from <i>this <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>) <i>is not your own doing<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> because <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> is feminine and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a> is neuter, then <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> should be excluded for the same reason. In other words, both grace and faith would be <i>your own doing <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ex.html#ex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>); literally, \u201cout from you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_reasons\"><\/a>In another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_lazy\">essay<\/a> I wrote: \u201cI\u2019m not qualified to engage that argument,\u201d thinking, I suppose, that it was too esoteric for my current knowledge of Koine Greek. But now it appears that I was just too lazy to engage the text. My reasons for including <i>grace <\/i>in the clause <i>this is not your own doing <\/i>have nothing to do with the genders of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, but with many other passages of Scripture and a not insignificant amount of personal experience. I cannot exclude faith solely on the basis of the gender of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#ths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are there other Scriptures that persuade me that faith is of my <i>own doing<\/i>? I&#8217;ll begin with a New Testament survey of <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/pisteo_s_4102.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> (Acts 11:19-24 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 8:1-3<\/a>)<\/em> traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote16sym\">coming<\/a> to Antioch <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote17sym\">spoke<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Hellenists\">Hellenists<\/a> also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote19sym\">who<\/a> believed turned to the Lord <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. The report of this came to the ears of the church in<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Jerusalem,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote21sym\">of<\/a> God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek words translated <i>who believed <\/i>in\u2014<i>and a great number <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote19sym\">who<\/a> believed turned to the Lord<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u2014were <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteusas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+11:21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NET parallel Greek<\/a> text and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.die-bibel.de\/en\/bible\/NA28\/ACT.11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NA<sup>28<\/sup><\/a>, and simply <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteusas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/textusreceptusbibles.com\/Stephanus\/44\/11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephanus Textus Receptus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/textusreceptusbibles.com\/GBMT\/44\/11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Byzantine Majority Text<\/a> (KJV: <i>and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord<\/i>). Adding <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteusas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> (a participle of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteuw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) leaves the possibility open that some <i>who believed <\/i>had not yet <i>turned <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epes.html#epestreye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u1f73\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03b5\u03c8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epist.html#epistrefw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03c1\u03ad\u03c6\u03c9<\/a>)<i> to the Lord <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+13:18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 13:18-23<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Luke+8:11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 8:11-15<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What interests me more in this context is: <i>And the hand of the Lord was with them<\/i>:<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html#kai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hn.html#hn2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f26\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ce.html#ceir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03b5\u1f76\u03c1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ku.html#kuriou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/met.html#met\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u1fbf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>. The pronoun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> is masculine, feminine and neuter, and most likely<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> refers back to <i>the Hellenists <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/el.html#ellhnistas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f19\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03bd\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f70\u03c2<\/a>) and forward to <i>a great number who believed<\/i>: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pol.html#polus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/te.html#te\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ari.html#ariqmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03b9\u03b8\u03bc\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pisteusas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>. In other words, <i>the hand of the Lord <\/i>is cited preceding the faith of <i>a great number <\/i>of <i>the Hellenists<\/i>. Was he puffing God up with false praise when the actual situation was that the faith of <i>a great number <\/i>of <i>the Hellenists <\/i>was of their <i>own doing<\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_precedes\"><\/a>The text continued: <i>for <\/i>[Barnabas]<i> was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> The Greek word translated <i>faith<\/i> here was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, a form of the noun <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>. I&#8217;ve made that assumption before. It&#8217;s not false unless I&#8217;m thinking causatively: <i>goodness <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agaq.html#agaqwsunh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03b8\u03c9\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) is another aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. This tense is also often referred to as the &#8216;punctiliar&#8217; tense. &#8216;Punctiliar&#8217; in this sense means &#8216;viewed as a single, collective whole,&#8217; a &#8220;one-point-in-time&#8221; action, although it may actually take place over a period of time. When I as a five-year-old child prayed a sinner&#8217;s prayer to Jesus to escape from burning in hell for all eternity, nothing happened except that I believed I didn&#8217;t need to fear hell.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a> When I as a twenty-something atheist stoner prayed, \u201cIf you&#8217;re really out there, I really want to know you,\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> the Holy Spirit invaded my <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/yu.html#yuch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c8\u03c5\u03c7\u03ae<\/a>: \u201csoul, life, creature, living being, physical life, life-force; corpse, dead person; an individual person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I didn\u2019t think much of the Gospel then. Been there, done that, I thought. The Gospel just didn\u2019t work out for me. This time I was going to do it right. The objective truth of the Bible was irrelevant to me. Its truth was like that of a contract. There were things for me to do and things God would do in exchange. He certainly knew I couldn&#8217;t keep my promise. Why did He give me his own Holy Spirit then and not when I was five?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I want to pause here to compile a brief dossier on Barnabas (Acts 4:33-37; 9:26-31; 11:22, 25, 26 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#sdfootnote6sym\">was<\/a> not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles\u2019 feet, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#sdfootnote7sym\">it was distributed<\/a> to each as any had need. Thus <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Joseph<\/a>, who was also called <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\">by<\/a> the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\">at<\/a> the apostles\u2019 feet <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/14\/wonders-and-false-wonders-part-3\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And when <em>[Paul, aka <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\">Saul<\/a>]<\/em> had come to Jerusalem, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote5sym\">he attempted<\/a> to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. So he went in and out among them <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\">at<\/a> Jerusalem, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote7sym\">preaching<\/a> boldly in the name of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Lord<\/a>. And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And when the brothers learned this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote12sym\">church<\/a> throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote13sym\">had<\/a> peace and was being <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote14sym\">built up<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#_ftn16\">walking<\/a> in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/04\/23\/fear-exodus-part-3\/#_ftn17\">multiplied<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The report of this <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+11:19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 11:19-21<\/a>)<\/em> came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote23sym\">Barnabas<\/a> went to Tarsus to look for Saul <em>[aka Paul]<\/em>, and when he had found <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote24sym\">him<\/a>, he brought <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote25sym\">him<\/a> to Antioch. For <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote26sym\">a whole year<\/a> they met <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote27sym\">with<\/a> the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The people who tried to lead the five-year-old me to the Lord, led me to atheism instead. It was certainly not their intent, just a fact. The twenty-something bibliolater me went back to the same church of the very same people, believing they were right and I was wrong. The difference? I was about twenty years older, but more to the point, I had been given the indwelling Holy Spirit of God. When I heard teaching or preaching the Holy Spirit brought other Scriptures to my mind. Sometimes those Scriptures agreed with what was taught or preached. That was a good day. Sometimes they did not. But I was studying the Bible on my own with the Holy Spirit, the Father and his Son. Eventually, Paul&#8217;s writings, writings that may never have been written (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 13:1-3<\/a>) if Barnabas had not gone <i>to Tarsus to look for Saul<\/i> and <i>brought him to Antioch<\/i>, led me to Jesus.
