{"id":24052,"date":"2024-06-11T13:11:08","date_gmt":"2024-06-11T18:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=24052"},"modified":"2024-10-16T16:55:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T21:55:41","slug":"keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=24052","title":{"rendered":"Keep Yourselves From Idols, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In another <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/\">essay<\/a> I began to consider the genders of Greek pronouns in Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For by grace you have been saved through <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn8\">faith<\/a>. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_Table5\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I was taught that <i>faith<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, was excluded from the clause <i>this is not your own doing <\/i>because <i>this<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, is neuter and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> is feminine. If that were true, however, it would exclude <i>grace<\/i> as well: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> is also feminine. \u201cIn other words, both grace and faith would be <i>your ow<\/i><\/span><i style=\"color: #000000;\">n<\/i><i style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0doing<\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;\u201d<\/span><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">My reasons for including grace in the clause <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">this is not your own doing<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> have nothing to do with the genders of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ca.html#cariti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#touto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, but with many other passages of Scripture and a not insignificant amount of personal experience.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I began a New Testament survey of <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/pisteo_s_4102.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> to see if I could find other Scriptures that persuade \u201cme that faith is of my <i>own doing<\/i>.\u201d I&#8217;ll begin with the first occurrence of <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/pisteo_s_4102.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> I skipped accidentally in the previous essay (Acts 6:1-5 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cIt is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup><em>4<\/em><\/sup><\/a> brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and of wisdom, whom we will appoint<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.\u201d And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup><em>7<\/em><\/sup><\/a> of faith <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here, <i>men of good repute <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mar.html#marturoumenous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a passive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mar.html#marturew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) were further characterized as <i>full of the Spirit <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhreis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) <i>and of wisdom <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> <i>If any of you lacks wisdom <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), James wrote, <i>let him ask God, who gives generously to all without<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><i> reproach, and it will be given him<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> I have no way to gain wisdom from the Lord apart from the near continuous internal dialogue with his indwelling Spirit and his word. In fact, it is easiest to distinguish his Spirit from the clutter inside me when we are directly engaged with the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Stephen <\/i>was <i>full of faith <\/i>(|<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/plh.html#plhrhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>) <i>and of the Holy Spirit <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agi.html#agiou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>).<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> Here, <i>full of faith <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/05\/28\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-2\/#_precedes\">precedes<\/a> <i>and of the Holy Spirit<\/i>. This is probably more to the point. Once the Lord&#8217;s wisdom began to penetrate the thickness of my disbelief (or my self-belief and self-reliance), once I began to see that it was kind of stupid to rely on my faith when his was <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/18\/romans-part-17\/#_defensive\">available<\/a> to me through his indwelling Spirit, there was no more question that faith <i>is not <\/i>[my] <i>own doing; it is the gift of God.<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To persist in relying on my own faith once I have learned from Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+11:28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 11:28-30<\/a>) would indicate a chafing at his yoke, a refusal to be led by his Spirit (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Galatians+5:13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galatians 5:13-18<\/a>). I would be relying still on my own love, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, trying still to manufacture my own joy and peace. I would be striving still to have a righteousness of my own <i>derived from the law<\/i>, rather than relying on <i>the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness\u2014a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a> It would indicate an arrogant refusal to enter his rest (<a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+4:7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hebrews 4:7-13<\/a>), once I have received his Holy Spirit and learned from Him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But what about before? Was the faith that received his Holy Spirit initially mine in the sense that it originated with me? Or was it mine in the sense that it was given to me? Jesus described the Holy Spirit as <i>the promise of the Father <\/i>(Acts 1:4, 5 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And while staying with them <em>[Jesus]<\/em> ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epag.html#epaggelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pat.html#patros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, which, he said, \u201cyou heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not only was He God&#8217;s promise but <i>you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit <\/i>was a statement of fact according to Jesus. The Greek word translated <i>you will be baptized <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptisqhsesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a passive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/bap.html#baptizw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>. The only requirements stated were <i>not to depart from Jerusalem <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apo.html#apo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/names\/ie.html#ierosolumwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f39\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/mh.html#mh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/cw.html#cwrizesqai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c7\u03c9\u03c1\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) and <i>to wait <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perim.html#perimenein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, an infinitive form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perim.html#perimenw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>). Granted, He spoke <i>to the apostles whom he had chosen <\/i>(Acts 1:1, 2 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup><em>14<\/em><\/sup><\/a> after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given the apostles&#8217; obedience to Jesus&#8217; commands, it seems reasonable to assume some kind of faith here, but whose? [H]<i>e had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles <\/i>seems like an odd construction: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#enteilamenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, translated <i>he had given commands <\/i>(ESV), is a participle of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle voice<\/a>: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Greek middle voice shows the subject acting in his own interest or on his own behalf, or participating in the results of the verbal action. In overly simplistic terms, sometimes the middle form of the verb could be translated as &#8220;the performer of the action actually acting upon himself&#8221; (reflexive action).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For example: &#8220;I am washing myself.&#8221; &#8220;I&#8221; is the subject of the sentence (performing the action of the verb) and yet &#8220;I&#8221; am also receiving the action of the verb. This is said to be in the &#8220;Middle Voice&#8221;. Many instances in the Greek are not this obvious and cannot be translated this literally. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equipgodspeople.com\/lexicons-word-study\/new-testament-greek\/strongs-g1781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">form<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/eneteilame_n_1781.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">occurs<\/a> in the New Testament is in the middle voice (see <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#_Tablec\">table<\/a> below). None are in the active voice. In other words, such <i>commands <\/i>were meant to be obeyed with the authority and power of the one making them rather than that of those receiving them: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#tois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aposto.html#apostolois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> is the indirect object, <i>to the apostles,<\/i> and finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agi.html#agiou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, <i>through <\/i>(or \u201cby\u201d or \u201cin the midst of\u201d) <i>the Holy Spirit<\/i>. It is a fairly expressive description of what it means to be <i>in Christ<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, I have the Holy Spirit of God acting on behalf of the apostles (dare I say, <i>in <\/i>the apostles?) to carry out Jesus&#8217; commands even before He indwells the apostles. I want to consider another example of a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> for comparison (Acts 13:44-48 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The next Sabbath almost the whole city <em>[of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Acts+13:14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pisidian Antioch<\/a>]<\/em> gathered to hear the word of the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote2sym\">Lord<\/a>. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote3sym\">reviling him<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote9sym\">And<\/a> Paul and Barnabas <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote10sym\">spoke out<\/a> boldly, saying, \u201cIt was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#sdfootnote11sym\">Since<\/a> you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/04\/saul-and-barnabas-part-3\/#_Table12\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. In other words, Paul and Barnabas recognized that the words of an ancient prophecy granted God&#8217;s authority and power to them to <i>bring <\/i>(or, <i>be for<\/i>) <i>salvation to the ends of the earth<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lord said something similar to Ananias about Saul (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/aka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aka<\/a> Paul) (Acts 9:10-19a ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, \u201cAnanias.\u201d And he said, \u201cHere I am, Lord.\u201d And the Lord said to him, \u201cRise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/10\/introduction-2\/#sdfootnote14sym\">hands<\/a> on him so that he might regain his sight.\u201d But <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/10\/introduction-2\/#sdfootnote15sym\">Ananias<\/a> answered, \u201cLord, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/10\/introduction-2\/#sdfootnote16sym\">I have heard<\/a> from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/10\/introduction-2\/#_Table4\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, \u201cSet apart for me <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote34sym\">Barnabas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#sdfootnote35sym\">Saul<\/a> for the work to which I have called them\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/25\/saul-and-barnabas-part-1\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So, being sent out by <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote2sym\">the Holy Spirit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote1sym\">they<\/a> went down to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote3sym\">Seleucia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote4sym\">and<\/a> from there they sailed to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#sdfootnote5sym\">Cyprus<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/28\/saul-and-barnabas-part-2\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now Paul<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. In other words, an individual&#8217;s faith was credited to being among those who enjoyed the continuing effect<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a> of having been <i>appointed to eternal life<\/i>. The Greek word translated<i> appointed <\/i>was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tet.html#tetagmenoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a participle of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ta.html#tassw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#TENSE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfect tense<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#VOICE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passive voices<\/a>: \u201cto appoint; to give orders to; to indicate by way of instruction; to ordain; to prescribe; to indicate as binding, indicate as a standard or rule\u201d (middle meaning); \u201cto be set in array; to be well ordered; to be appointed\u201d (passive meaning). This corresponds quite accurately to Jesus&#8217; saying: <i>No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/06\/11\/keep-yourselves-from-idols-part-3\/#sdfootnote32sym\" name=\"sdfootnote32anc\"><sup>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But what of those who were not appointed to eternal life, were not drawn by the Father and did not believe? If I believe that they are eternally condemned I might be persuaded that their unbelief was their own choice.
