In another essay<\/a> I began to consider the genders of Greek pronouns in Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

For by grace you have been saved through faith<\/a>. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was taught that faith<\/i>, \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, was excluded from the clause this is not your own doing <\/i>because this<\/i>, \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, is neuter and \u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> is feminine. If that were true, however, it would exclude grace<\/i> as well: \u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>…\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> is also feminine. \u201cIn other words, both grace and faith would be your ow<\/i><\/span>n<\/i>\u00a0doing<\/i>…\u201d<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

My reasons for including grace in the clause <\/span><\/span><\/em>this is not your own doing<\/span><\/span> have nothing to do with the genders of \u03a4\u1fc7<\/a>…\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> and \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, but with many other passages of Scripture and a not insignificant amount of personal experience.2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I began a New Testament survey of \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> to see if I could find other Scriptures that persuade \u201cme that faith is of my own doing<\/i>.\u201d I’ll begin with the first occurrence of \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> I skipped accidentally in the previous essay (Acts 6:1-5 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u201cIt is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore,4<\/em><\/sup><\/a> brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and of wisdom, whom we will appoint6<\/sup><\/a><\/em> to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.\u201d And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full7<\/em><\/sup><\/a> of faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here, men of good repute <\/i>(\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c5\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, a passive form of \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) were further characterized as full of the Spirit <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) and of wisdom <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>).8<\/sup><\/a> If any of you lacks wisdom <\/i>(\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), James wrote, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> reproach, and it will be given him<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a> I have no way to gain wisdom from the Lord apart from the near continuous internal dialogue with his indwelling Spirit and his word. In fact, it is easiest to distinguish his Spirit from the clutter inside me when we are directly engaged with the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stephen <\/i>was full of faith <\/i>(|\u03c0\u03bb\u1f75\u03c1\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>| \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>) and of the Holy Spirit <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>).11<\/sup><\/a> Here, full of faith <\/i>precedes<\/a> and of the Holy Spirit<\/i>. This is probably more to the point. Once the Lord’s wisdom began to penetrate the thickness of my disbelief (or my self-belief and self-reliance), once I began to see that it was kind of stupid to rely on my faith when his was available<\/a> to me through his indwelling Spirit, there was no more question that faith is not <\/i>[my] own doing; it is the gift of God.<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

To persist in relying on my own faith once I have learned from Him (Matthew 11:28-30<\/a>) would indicate a chafing at his yoke, a refusal to be led by his Spirit (Galatians 5:13-18<\/a>). I would be relying still on my own love, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, trying still to manufacture my own joy and peace. I would be striving still to have a righteousness of my own derived from the law<\/i>, rather than relying on the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness\u2014a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a> It would indicate an arrogant refusal to enter his rest (Hebrews 4:7-13<\/a>), once I have received his Holy Spirit and learned from Him. <\/span><\/p>\n

But what about before? Was the faith that received his Holy Spirit initially mine in the sense that it originated with me? Or was it mine in the sense that it was given to me? Jesus described the Holy Spirit as the promise of the Father <\/i>(Acts 1:4, 5 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n

And while staying with them [Jesus]<\/em> ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father (\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03bb\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, which, he said, \u201cyou heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not only was He God’s promise but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit <\/i>was a statement of fact according to Jesus. The Greek word translated you will be baptized <\/i>was \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a passive form of \u03b2\u03b1\u03c0\u03c4\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a> in the indicative mood<\/a>. The only requirements stated were not to depart from Jerusalem <\/i>(\u1f00\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> \u1f39\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7b\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03c7\u03c9\u03c1\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) and to wait <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, an infinitive form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>). Granted, He spoke to the apostles whom he had chosen <\/i>(Acts 1:1, 2 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up,14<\/em><\/sup><\/a> after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Given the apostles’ obedience to Jesus’ commands, it seems reasonable to assume some kind of faith here, but whose? [H]e had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles <\/i>seems like an odd construction: \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, translated he had given commands <\/i>(ESV), is a participle of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> in the middle voice<\/a>: <\/span><\/p>\n

The Greek middle voice shows the subject acting in his own interest or on his own behalf, or participating in the results of the verbal action. In overly simplistic terms, sometimes the middle form of the verb could be translated as “the performer of the action actually acting upon himself” (reflexive action).<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

For example: “I am washing myself.” “I” is the subject of the sentence (performing the action of the verb) and yet “I” am also receiving the action of the verb. This is said to be in the “Middle Voice”. Many instances in the Greek are not this obvious and cannot be translated this literally. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Every form<\/a> of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> that occurs<\/a> in the New Testament is in the middle voice (see table<\/a> below). None are in the active voice. In other words, such commands <\/i>were meant to be obeyed with the authority and power of the one making them rather than that of those receiving them: \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u1f79\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> is the indirect object, to the apostles,<\/i> and finally, \u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, through <\/i>(or \u201cby\u201d or \u201cin the midst of\u201d) the Holy Spirit<\/i>. It is a fairly expressive description of what it means to be in Christ<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

So, I have the Holy Spirit of God acting on behalf of the apostles (dare I say, in <\/i>the apostles?) to carry out Jesus’ commands even before He indwells the apostles. I want to consider another example of a form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> for comparison (Acts 13:44-48 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

The next Sabbath almost the whole city [of Pisidian Antioch<\/a>]<\/em> gathered to hear the word of the Lord<\/a>. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And<\/a> Paul and Barnabas spoke out<\/a> boldly, saying, \u201cIt was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since<\/a> you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For so the Lord has commanded us (\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u1f73\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em>, saying,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing<\/a> and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The part of this quotation Paul and Barnabas excluded, which was also excluded apparently from the Masoretic text and the NETS translation of the Septuagint, is quite telling: \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03b8\u1f75\u03ba\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> \u03b3\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, for the covenant of a race <\/i>(English Elpenor), is only true of Jesus. Still, they were willing to quote the rest, which is also true of Jesus, under the heading: \u03bf\u1f55\u03c4\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u03b3\u1f70\u03c1<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u1f73\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a> \u1f41<\/a> \u03ba\u1f7b\u03c1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, For so the Lord has commanded us <\/i>(ESV). In other words, Paul and Barnabas recognized that the words of an ancient prophecy granted God’s authority and power to them to bring <\/i>(or, be for<\/i>) salvation to the ends of the earth<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord said something similar to Ananias about Saul (aka<\/a> Paul) (Acts 9:10-19a ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, \u201cAnanias.\u201d And he said, \u201cHere I am, Lord.\u201d And the Lord said to him, \u201cRise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands<\/a> on him so that he might regain his sight.\u201d But Ananias<\/a> answered, \u201cLord, I have heard<\/a> from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.\u201d But the Lord said to him, \u201cGo, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and<\/a> kings and the children of Israel [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Ananias, unaware as yet that the Lord had already arrested Saul (Acts 9:3-9<\/a>), was concerned about the authority <\/i>(\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) Saul had received (Acts 9:1, 2<\/a>) from the chief priests to bind all who call on <\/i>[Jesus’] name<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a> But the Lord informed him of the good works, which God prepared beforehand, that <\/i>[Saul, aka<\/a> Paul] should walk in them<\/i>:20<\/sup><\/a> he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and<\/a> kings and the children of Israel<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Now there were22<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch,23<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, \u201cSet apart for me Barnabas<\/a> and Saul<\/a> for the work to which I have called them\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit<\/a>, they<\/a> went down to Seleucia<\/a>, and<\/a> from there they sailed to Cyprus<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole24<\/sup><\/a><\/em> island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain25<\/sup><\/a><\/em> magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.26<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now Paul27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem, but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia<\/a>.28<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here again, the Holy Spirit was instrumental in bringing Jesus’ words to Ananias to pass. There are two more issues I want to consider before concluding this essay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, if I intend to take the middle voice of forms of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a> seriously, I’m compelled to understand \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f75\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> in Acts 1:4<\/a>, he ordered them <\/i>(ESV), differently. The Greek word \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u1f75\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> is a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>: \u201cto pass on a message, transmit a message, tell, communicate; to give orders, give a command, issue an order; to charge, command; to instruct, direct, order, advise; to summon (to appear), summon (to one’s help).\u201d That Jesus \u201ccommunicated to the apostles\u201d what He was doing in and through them by his Holy Spirit honors both the middle voice of \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in Acts 1:2<\/a>, he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen<\/i> (ESV), and Jesus’ saying: No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you<\/i>.29<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, I want to spend a few moments considering and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed<\/i>:30<\/sup><\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u1f45\u03c3\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> \u1f26\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03b6\u03c9\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1f7d\u03bd\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since \u1f10\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c5\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> is a 3rd<\/sup> person singular form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>, a more accurate translation might be: and<\/i> [he] believed<\/i>, as many as were appointed to eternal life<\/i>. In other words, an individual’s faith was credited to being among those who enjoyed the continuing effect31<\/sup><\/a> of having been appointed to eternal life<\/i>. The Greek word translated appointed <\/i>was \u03c4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, a participle of the verb \u03c4\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/a> in the perfect tense<\/a> and middle<\/a> and passive voices<\/a>: \u201cto appoint; to give orders to; to indicate by way of instruction; to ordain; to prescribe; to indicate as binding, indicate as a standard or rule\u201d (middle meaning); \u201cto be set in array; to be well ordered; to be appointed\u201d (passive meaning). This corresponds quite accurately to Jesus’ saying: No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him<\/i>.32<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

But what of those who were not appointed to eternal life, were not drawn by the Father and did not believe? If I believe that they are eternally condemned I might be persuaded that their unbelief was their own choice. It’s a small step from there to believing that my faith was my own choice, perhaps even my own doing: Isn’t that the reason that I am saved and they are condemned?<\/span><\/p>\n
