Back at Eden<\/a> in Lars Von Trier\u2019s<\/a> \u201cAntichrist<\/a>\u201d she<\/i> (Charlotte Gainsbourg<\/a>) explained an incident that happened the past summer.\u00a0 She<\/i> heard her son Nic crying.\u00a0 She<\/i> searched everywhere for him.\u00a0 When she<\/i> found him, he was playing contentedly, but the crying persisted for a time in the air in Eden.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you\u2019re experiencing is panic, nothing more,\u201d he<\/i> (Willem Dafoe<\/a>) said.\u00a0 \u201cThe screaming wasn\u2019t real.\u201d<\/p>\n

She<\/i> took that in as he<\/i> walked away.\u00a0 Then she<\/i> jumped him and started hitting him.\u00a0 He wrestled her to the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re just so damn arrogant,\u201d she<\/i> said.<\/p>\n

Later she shared her own conclusion about hearing Nic cry:\u00a0 \u201cNow I could hear what I couldn\u2019t hear before,\u201d she<\/i> said, \u201cthe cry of all things that are to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all very touching,\u201d he<\/i> said, \u201cif it was a children\u2019s book\u2026.That\u2019s what fear is.\u00a0 Your thoughts distort reality, not the other way around.\u201d\u00a0 But he had already experienced some of the \u201creality\u201d distortion of Eden, and his words had begun to ring hollow.<\/p>\n

\u201cSatan\u2019s church,\u201d she<\/i> said later.<\/p>\n

\u201cSatan!? Jesus!\u201d the rationalist psychologist, who believed in neither, exclaimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNature is Satan\u2019s church,\u201d she<\/i> asserted.<\/p>\n

The earth was ruined in the sight of God<\/i>, the book of Genesis reads, the earth was filled with violence <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0God saw the earth, and indeed it was ruined, for all living creatures on the earth were sinful<\/i> [Table<\/a>].1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0We accept the violence of animals (and even that of human beings sometimes) as \u201cnatural,\u201d because fallen nature is natural to us.\u00a0 But the Creator did not: God said to Noah, \u201cI have decided that all living creatures must die, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. \u00a0Now I am about to destroy them and the earth<\/i>.\u201d<\/em>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

In \u201cAntichrist\u201d\u00a0her husband\u00a0couldn\u2019t tolerate her conclusion about fallen nature being Satan\u2019s church.\u00a0 He<\/i> began to talk to her about nature<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kind of nature that causes people to do evil things against women?\u201d she<\/i> asked.\u00a0 He<\/em> agreed.<\/p>\n

If you continue to follow my teaching<\/i>, Jesus said to those who had believed him, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

We are descendants of Abraham<\/i>, they protested, and have never been anyone\u2019s slaves!<\/i>4<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I tell you the solemn truth<\/i>, Jesus answered, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I know that you are Abraham\u2019s descendants<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. \u00a0Abraham did not do this! \u00a0You people are doing the deeds of your father<\/i> [Table<\/a>].7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

We were not born as a result of immorality<\/i>\u00a0(\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of\u00a0\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)!<\/i> They protested again.\u00a0 We have only one Father, God himself<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here<\/i>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 You people are from your father<\/a> the devil<\/i>, Jesus continued, and you want to do what your father desires. \u00a0He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not<\/a> uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God\u2019s words. \u00a0You don\u2019t listen and respond, because you don\u2019t belong to God<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThat kind of nature interested me a lot when I was up here,\u201d she<\/i> continued.\u00a0 \u201cThat kind of nature was the subject of my thesis.\u00a0 But you shouldn\u2019t underestimate Eden\u2026.I discovered something else in my material than I expected.\u00a0 If human nature is evil then that goes as well for the nature of\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026of the women,\u201d he<\/i> finished her thought, \u201cfemale nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nature of all the sisters,\u201d she<\/i> agreed.\u00a0 \u201cWomen do not control their own bodies.\u00a0 Nature does.\u00a0 I have it in writing in my books.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe literature that you used in your research was about evil things committed against women,\u201d he<\/i> clarified for her.\u00a0 \u201cBut you read it as proof of the evil of women?\u00a0 You were supposed to be critical of those texts.\u00a0 That was your thesis.\u00a0 Instead you\u2019re embracing it.\u00a0 Do you know what you\u2019re saying?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cForget it,\u201d she<\/i> said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know why I said it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later he<\/i> attempted to drive his point home.\u00a0 But by that moment in the film it seemed like he was trying to persuade himself, more than her, that the strange visions and dreams he was having in Eden weren\u2019t real.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u201cGood and evil have nothing to do with therapy,\u201d he<\/i> assured her.\u00a0 \u201cDo you know how many innocent women were killed in the 16th<\/sup> century alone just for being women?\u00a0 I\u2019m sure you do\u2014many\u2014and not because they were evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u00a0 It\u2019s just sometimes I forget,\u201d she<\/i> said without conviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe evil you talk about is an obsession.\u00a0 Obsessions never materialize.\u00a0 It\u2019s a scientific fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

She<\/i> caught up with him in the shed later and attacked him.\u00a0 She<\/i> feared that he<\/i> would leave her.\u00a0 As he<\/i> wrestled with her and fended off her blows he<\/i> protested that he<\/i> loved her.\u00a0 Just as it seemed that their fighting would become fucking<\/a>, she<\/i> hit him in the groin with a heavy object (a toolbox, I think, by the sound of it; I winced both times I saw it).\u00a0 Though he<\/i> lost consciousness from the pain, he<\/i> still had an erection.\u00a0 She<\/i> massaged it to a bloody ejaculation.\u00a0 Nature, it seems, also controlled his body.<\/p>\n

I, too, have nothing but a woman\u2019s word for the way my body responded when I was unconscious from driving all night to get home to her.\u00a0 I awoke refreshed and whole.\u00a0 In \u201cAntichrist\u201d he<\/i> awoke to find a whole drilled through his calf and a heavy grinding stone bolted to his leg.\u00a0 While she was outside disposing of the wrench under the shed, he attempted to escape, dragging his hobbled leg.<\/p>\n

She<\/i> found him hiding in a fox\u2019s lair and dug him out.\u00a0 She<\/i> dragged him back to the shed.\u00a0 She<\/i> grabbed scissors and hid them from him as she<\/i> began to masturbate with his hand.\u00a0 I expected that he<\/i> was about to be emasculated.\u00a0 But she<\/i> exposed and put her own clitoris in between the scissors\u2019 blades instead.<\/p>\n

<\/a>I remember the Sunday afternoon during my first divorce when I considered cutting off my penis according to Jesus\u2019 command.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou would need to cut off your head.\u201d\u00a0 It was the way He knew my thoughts from afar that persuaded me He was speaking.\u00a0 I had gotten well beyond the act to its aftermath in my mind.\u00a0 There was no way I would call for help and have to explain why I cut off my own penis.\u00a0 I had considered cauterizing the wound because stitching seemed out of the question.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure if I could stop the blood flow or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will kill me for sure,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

His answer was \u201cprecisely\u201d or \u201cexactly,\u201d something to that effect.\u00a0 I had been studying Romans.\u00a0 At that moment I began to take Jesus\u2019 command to cut off my penis (literally, a hand or a foot)12<\/sup><\/a> more figuratively, and Paul\u2019s insight\u2014we have been buried with<\/i> [Christ] through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life<\/i>13<\/sup><\/a>\u2014more literally.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntichrist\u201d is a horror movie.\u00a0 She<\/i> was not studying Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans.\u00a0 No still small voice intervened to enlighten her.\u00a0 She<\/i> snipped off her clitoris with the scissors.\u00a0 As she<\/i> writhed in pain, he<\/i> recovered the wrench and freed himself from the grinding stone.\u00a0 And though he<\/i> didn\u2019t believe in Satan\u2019s church, he<\/i> joined her in worship.\u00a0 He<\/i> choked her to death with his bare hands, after he<\/i> silenced her voice by crushing her larynx.<\/p>\n

As he<\/i> limped away, the last man standing, he<\/i> had a vision.\u00a0 He<\/i> was surrounded by women, the victims of gynocide<\/a>, I think.\u00a0 When asked at Cannes to account for \u201cAntichrist,\u201d Lars Von Trier resisted.\u00a0 But if the featurette on the DVD was edited honestly, eventually he said\u00a0something to the effect that it was the hand of God.<\/p>\n

Though Trier claimed not to know, the closing scene of \u201cAntichrist\u201d reminded me of a scene Jesus described: The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented when Jonah preached to them \u2013 and now, something greater than Jonah is here! \u00a0The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon<\/a> \u2013 and now, something greater than Solomon<\/a> is here!<\/i> [Table<\/a>]14<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0The people of Ninevah<\/i> and the queen of the South<\/i> were portrayed by the victims of gynocide, while he<\/i>, the rationalist psychologist, was this generation<\/i>.<\/p>\n
