For by the grace<\/i> (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) given to me<\/i>, Paul continued describing the will of God<\/a> \u2013 what is good and well-pleasing and perfect<\/i>,1<\/sup><\/a> I say to every one of you not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think, but to think with sober discernment, as God has distributed to each of you a measure of faith<\/i>.2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 To offset my own tendency to think that sober discernment<\/i> is necessary because God has distributed <\/i>a niggardly measure of faith<\/i> (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>) to me, I want to look at two other occurrences of \u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>.\u00a0 The first described the words Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth (Luke 4:18, 19 NET):<\/p>\n

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.\u00a0 He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After Jesus returned the scroll to the attendant and sat down, he added, Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read<\/i>.3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Luke wrote, All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious <\/i>(\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) words coming out of his mouth<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So proclaiming 1) good news to the poor<\/i>, 2) release to the captives<\/i>, 3) the regaining of sight to the blind<\/i>, 4) setting free those who are oppressed<\/i>, and 5) the year of the Lord\u2019s favor<\/i> were called gracious<\/i> (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) words<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 There was nothing niggardly about it.<\/p>\n

For if, by the transgression of the one man<\/i>, Paul wrote the first time he used \u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> in his letter to the Romans, death reigned through the one, how<\/i> much more will those who receive the abundance of grace<\/i> (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Sober discernment<\/i> entails all of these facts without implying a niggardly measure of faith<\/i>, but the realization that any of the recipients of this \u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> is one person among many.\u00a0 For just as in <\/i>(\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>) one <\/i>(\u1f11\u03bd\u1f76<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>) body we have many members<\/i>, Paul continued, and not all the members serve the same function, so we who are many are one <\/i>(\u1f13\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>) body in <\/i>(\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>) Christ, and individually<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> we are members who belong to one <\/i>(\u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>) another<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I think sober discernment<\/i> was equivalent for Paul to walking worthily of the calling with which <\/i>[we] have been called, <\/i>as he wrote the Ephesians, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love <\/i>[Table<\/a>], making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace<\/i>.9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For here, too, a description of oneness followed (Ephesians 4:4-7 NET).<\/p>\n

There is one (\u1fde\u0395\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> body and one (\u1f13\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> Spirit, just as you too were called to (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> the one (\u03bc\u03b9\u1fb7<\/a>, yet another form of \u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> hope of your calling, one (\u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> Lord, one (\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>faith, one (\u1f13\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> baptism, one (\u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> all<\/a> [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.\u00a0 But to each one (\u1f19\u03bd\u1f76<\/a>, still another form of \u03b5\u1f37\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> of us grace (\u03c7\u1f71\u03c1\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> was given according to the measure (\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>)<\/em> of the gift of Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And we have different gifts<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) according to the grace given to us<\/i>, Paul continued to describe the diversity of this oneness in Romans, a theme he revisited often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The Diversity of Oneness<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

And we have different gifts (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>) according to the grace given to us. If the gift is prophecy (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), that individual must use it in proportion to his faith. \u00a0If it is service, he must serve; if it is teaching, he must teach; if it is exhortation, he must exhort; if it is contributing, he must do so with sincerity; if it is leadership, he must do so with diligence; if it is showing mercy, he must do so with cheerfulness.<\/p>\n

Romans 12:6-8 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

It was he who gave some as apostles, some as prophets (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>), some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, that is, to build up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God \u2013 a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ\u2019s full stature.<\/p>\n

Ephesians 4:11-13 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Now there are different gifts (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>), but the same Spirit. \u00a0And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. \u00a0And there are different results, but<\/a> the same God who produces all of them in everyone [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the benefit of all. \u00a0For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, and another the message of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another<\/a> faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>) of healing by the one<\/a> Spirit, to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>), and to another discernment of spirits, to another<\/a> different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues [Table<\/a>]. \u00a0It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (NET)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

I want to consider these different<\/i>10<\/sup><\/a> gifts<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>) individually. \u00a0\u00a0If the gift<\/i> is prophecy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>), that individual must use it in proportion to his faith<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I am assuming that in proportion <\/i>(\u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03bd\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) to his faith<\/i> relates back to that measure <\/i>(\u03bc\u1f73\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) of faith<\/i> God has distributed to each<\/i>.\u00a0 In the law the Lord said to Moses (Deuteronomy 18:18-20 NET):<\/p>\n

I will raise up a prophet like you for them from among their fellow Israelites.\u00a0 I will put my words in his mouth and he will speak to them whatever I command [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0I will personally hold responsible anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet speaks in my name [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now if you say to yourselves<\/i>, the Lord continued, \u201cHow can we tell that a message is not from the Lord<\/i> (y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>)?\u201d \u2013 whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear<\/i> (g\u00fbr<\/i>, \u05ea\u05b8\u05d2\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8<\/a>; Septuagint<\/a>: \u1f00\u03c6\u1f73\u03be\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) him<\/i>.12<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But a fulfilled prediction alone was not sufficient to declare one a prophet of y\u1d4ah\u014dv\u00e2<\/i>, \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4<\/a> (Deuteronomy 13:1-5 NET):<\/p>\n

Suppose a prophet or one who foretells by dreams should appear among you and show you a sign or wonder, and the sign or wonder should come to pass concerning what he said to you, namely, \u201cLet us follow other gods\u201d \u2013 gods whom you have not previously known \u2013 \u201cand let us serve them.\u201d \u00a0You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, for the Lord your God will be testing you to see if you love him with all your mind and being. \u00a0You must follow the Lord your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him. \u00a0As for that prophet or dreamer, he must be executed because he encouraged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, redeeming you from that place of slavery, and because he has tried to entice you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to go. \u00a0In this way you must purge out evil from within.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah (apparently a false prophet), From earliest times, the prophets who preceded you and me invariably prophesied war, disaster, and plagues against many countries and great kingdoms. \u00a0So if a prophet prophesied peace and prosperity, it was only known that the Lord truly sent him when what he prophesied came true<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In this light I can begin to appreciate the proportion of Jesus\u2019 faith when He read those gracious words\u2014The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor<\/i>\u2014and added, Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read<\/i>.<\/p>\n

And so Paul wrote, If the gift<\/i> is prophecy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>), that individual must use it in proportion to his faith<\/i>.\u00a0 And if I have prophecy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>), he wrote the Corinthians, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains<\/a>, but do not have love, I am nothing<\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I can\u2019t tell if this was a hypothetical consideration to highlight the preeminence of love, or an actual concern.\u00a0 It is difficult to imagine an individual who received so many of the different gifts<\/i>15<\/sup><\/a> (\u0394\u03b9\u03b1\u03b9\u03c1\u1f73\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u1f72<\/a> \u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f71\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>) of the Spirit, not shared by all (For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a>\u2026to another prophecy [\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1<\/a>]17<\/sup><\/a>\u2026), and yet did not have the love that is given by the same Spirit to all believers<\/a>. \u00a0If such a monstrosity is actually possible it would seem to be someone with a religious mind believing something other than the word of the Lord to quench the love that is the fruit of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

Love never ends<\/i>, Paul continued to contrast love and prophecy in Corinthians.\u00a0 But if there are prophecies<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), they will be set aside<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a>\u2026when what is perfect comes<\/i>\u202619<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Pursue love<\/i>, he wrote, and be eager for the spiritual gifts<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u1f71<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03c5\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), especially that you may prophesy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>).20<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Then he contrasted prophesying to one speaking in a tongue<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit<\/i>, Paul concluded, seek to abound in order to strengthen the church. \u00a0So then,<\/i>21<\/sup><\/a> one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And, I thank God<\/i>23<\/sup><\/a> that I speak<\/i>24<\/sup><\/a> in tongues more than all of you, but<\/i>25<\/sup><\/a> in the church I want to speak five words with my mind<\/i>26<\/sup><\/a> to instruct others, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue<\/i>.27<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Then he quoted the Old Testament prophecy concerning tongues: By people with strange tongues and by the lips of strangers<\/i><\/b>28<\/sup><\/a> I will speak to this people<\/b>, yet not even in this way will they listen to me<\/b><\/i>\u202629<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So then, tongues<\/i>, he concluded, are a sign<\/i>\u2026for unbelievers<\/i>.\u00a0 Prophecy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), however, is<\/i>\u2026for believers<\/i>.30<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

So if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds?<\/i>31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In other words, the Old Testament prophecy holds true: unbelievers hearing strange tongues will not listen to the Lord.\u00a0 Rather, they say, you have lost your minds<\/i>.\u00a0 But if all prophesy<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03c9\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>), and an unbeliever or uninformed person enters, he will be convicted by all, he will be called to account by all. \u00a0The<\/i>32<\/sup><\/a> secrets of his heart are disclosed<\/i>\u202633<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 So prophecy is for believers, their rightful occupation that brings an unbeliever or uninformed person to faith and repentance, and in this way he will fall down with his face to the ground and worship God, declaring, \u201cGod is really among you.\u201d<\/i>34<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Still, It was<\/i> [Jesus] who gave<\/i>\u2026some<\/i> [not all] as prophets<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>) \u2026to equip the saints for the work of ministry, that is, to build up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God \u2013 a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ\u2019s full stature<\/i>.35<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And God has placed in the church<\/i>[Table<\/a>]\u2026second prophets<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>)\u2026Not all are prophets<\/i> (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>), are they?<\/i>36<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 No, because we have different gifts <\/i>(\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u1f77\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) according to the grace given to us<\/i>.37<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For just as in one body we have many members<\/i>, and not all the members serve the same function, so we who are many are one body in Christ, and individually we are members who belong to one another<\/i>.38<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Addendum\u00a0<\/strong>(7\/18\/2015): Jim Searcy<\/a> has published that the Septuagint is a hoax<\/a> written by Origen<\/a> and Eusebius<\/a> 200 hundred years after Christ.\u00a0 \u201cIn fact, the Septuagint \u2018quotes\u2019 from the New Testament and not vice versa\u2026\u201d\u00a0 His contention is that the \u201cKing James Version is the infallible Word of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll re-examine the quotations above with the KJV.<\/p>\n

The scroll Jesus read in the synagogue<\/a> was not written in Greek, nor did Luke simply hear about Jesus reading a scroll in a synagogue and turn to the Septuagint to fill in a blank space in his Gospel narrative. I’m reasonably convinced that this is not a Greek translation of a transcript of an electromagnetic or digital recording of Jesus reading a scroll in Hebrew in a synagogue, but the implications for inspiration here are quite compelling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Jesus could read from anywhere in the scroll He chose to read when his purpose was to reveal fulfilled prophecy as far as I’m concerned. What surprises me is that He could insert one line from the Lord’s fast<\/a> into the middle of the passage about the Lord’s anointing of the Messiah<\/a> without stirring up any comment or question.<\/span><\/p>\n
