&#8211; Exodus, Part 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The Lord spoke to Moses: \u201cGo quickly, descend, because your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>]<i>. \u00a0They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them \u2013 they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, \u2018These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]<i>.\u2019\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_clueless\"><\/a>What follows is the classic story of the jealous Jehovah dissuaded by the brave hero Moses from carrying out his \u201cevil\u201d wrath on the descendants of Israel.\u00a0 Moses seems to me like a man who would be horrified by this reading of his story.\u00a0 I think his matter-of-fact writing style doesn\u2019t convey tone or some of the nuance that a more artful writer (Luke, for instance) might convey.<\/p>\n<p><i>I have seen this people<\/i>, the Lord continued. \u00a0<i>Look what a stiff-necked people they are <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<i>! \u00a0So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/07\/jephthahs-religious-mind\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In his response, <i>O Lord, why does your anger burn against your people<\/i>, Moses\u2019 writing style paints himself as clueless as it paints Jehovah vengeful.\u00a0 Yet the provocation for Jehovah\u2019s anger is clearly stated in the rest of Moses\u2019 rhetorical question. \u00a0<i>O Lord, why does your anger burn against your people, whom you have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who wouldn\u2019t be angry if his or her beneficence was credited by its recipients to their own work?\u00a0 How angry should Jehovah be when we claim that his gift of righteousness through his bearing of our sins by his death on a cross and his resurrection is by our own efforts or our own intrinsic goodness?<\/p>\n<p>As I read this I heard Jehovah shouting angrily, <i>Look what a stiff-necked people they are!\u00a0 So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation<\/i>.\u00a0 But would Moses have disobeyed Jehovah\u2019s direct command\u2014<i>leave me alone<\/i>\u2014spoken in anger?\u00a0 Or did he hear the lamentation in Jehovah\u2019s voice and understand that Jehovah was asking leave of Moses to stand aside and allow Jehovah\u2019s anger to follow its natural course and <i>burn against them<\/i> and <i>destroy them<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Moses\"><\/a><i>Why should the Egyptians say, \u201cFor evil <\/i>(<i>ra\u02bf<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>)<i> he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth\u201d<\/i> Moses continued.\u00a0 <i>Turn from your burning anger, and relent of this evil against your people<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Again, the writing here leaves the impression that Moses didn\u2019t understand the covenant the people agreed to, <i>Whoever sacrifices to a god other than the Lord alone must be utterly destroyed<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 They had violated the covenant.\u00a0 Did Moses expect Jehovah to violate it, too?<\/p>\n<p>Moses had <i>told the people all the Lord\u2019s words and all the decisions.\u00a0 All the people answered together, \u201cWe are willing to do all the words that the Lord has said\u201d <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2026\/03\/08\/balaam-balak-and-the-24000-part-3\/#_Table37\">Table<\/a>]<i>, and Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0<i>He took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said, \u201cWe are willing to do and obey all that the Lord has spoken.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By what authority did Moses declare the Lord Jehovah\u2019s intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it <i>evil<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_covenant\"><\/a>I am not saying that Jehovah did wrong by declining to carry out the punishment demanded by the covenant.\u00a0 Jehovah never bound Himself to that, but said to Moses, <i>I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 What I am saying is, though the collection of writings known as the Old Testament continues for many volumes, the Old Covenant as an agreement between Jehovah and the descendants of Israel to keep his commandments and receive his blessing came to its crashing conclusion right here.\u00a0 When Jehovah declined to exact his vengeance on Israel according to the covenant they agreed to, when He did not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/21\/romans-part-45\/\"><i>purge<\/i><\/a><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> the evil from Israel by executing them but showed them mercy, He <i>consigned all<\/i> [Israel] <i>to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/05\/02\/romans-part-43\/\">disobedience<\/a> so that he may show mercy to them all<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants<\/i>, Moses pleaded, <i>to whom you swore by yourself and told them, \u201cI will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about I will give to your descendants, and they will inherit it forever.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And Paul wrote the Romans (Romans 4:13-17 NET):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#sdfootnote1sym\">world<\/a> was not fulfilled through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/\">faith<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Table53\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For if they become heirs by the law, faith is empty and the promise is nullified. \u00a0For the law brings wrath, because<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> where there is no law there is no transgression either <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/28\/romans-part-41\/#_Table25\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u00a0For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace, with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants \u2013 not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, \u201c<b>I have made you the father of many nations<\/b>\u201d <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/28\/romans-part-20\/#_Addendumb\">Quotation Comparison Table<\/a>]<\/em>). \u00a0He is our father in the presence of God whom he believed \u2013 the God who makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Then the Lord relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Moses was not as clueless as his writing style made him appear to be.\u00a0 As for Jehovah\u2014and I want to say this as reverently as possible\u2014there is always a sense of theatricality in his interactions with human beings, for He knew this particular circumstance, this particular conversation and its particular outcome before the beginning, when He <i>created the heavens and the earth<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For many years I declined to tell Him about my day, my reactions to it, the ways I thought and felt about it all.\u00a0 It seemed like a waste of time.\u00a0 He knew me better than I knew myself.\u00a0 Eventually I realized that fact alone made the retelling valuable\u2014for me.\u00a0 As I tell Him about it He points out things that I missed or didn\u2019t understand, about me and the things that happened during the day.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_evil\"><\/a>As I turn my attention to the authority by which Moses declared the Lord Jehovah\u2019s <i>apparent<\/i> intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it <i>evil<\/i>, I am confronted with three different instances.\u00a0 All three however are the same word <i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05e8\u05b7\u05e2<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, the Hebrew word for <i>evil<\/i> sounds like the Egyptian word for <i>sun god<\/i>.\u00a0 Allan Langner<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jbqnew.jewishbible.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jewish Bible Quarterly<\/a>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a> \u201cin Exodus 32:12, when Moses pleads with God\u2026The word for evil [b\u2019raah] can also be taken as a reference to Ra. \u00a0The verse would then read: \u2018Wherefore should the Egyptians say, Ra brought them out to slay them in the mountains?\u2019\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Perhaps the Egyptians would have said that.\u00a0 Perhaps Moses would have said that the Egyptians would say that.\u00a0 Or, perhaps Moses said that the Egyptians would say that Jehovah had led Israel into, or for, an evil purpose.<\/p>\n<p>None of this compels me to conclude that Jehovah\u2019s <i>apparent<\/i> intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it was in fact <i>evil<\/i>.\u00a0 But in the next instance\u2014<i>Turn from your burning anger, and relent of this evil<\/i> (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>) <i>against your people<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a>\u2014Moses called Jehovah\u2019s <i>apparent<\/i> intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it <i>evil<\/i>.\u00a0 This was more troubling.\u00a0 The note in the NET reads: \u201cThe word \u2018evil\u2019 means any kind of life-threatening or fatal calamity. \u2018Evil\u2019 is that which hinders life, interrupts life, causes pain to life, or destroys it.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, Jehovah\u2019s <i>apparent<\/i> intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it would only be <i>apparently<\/i> evil from a human perspective, not <i>actually<\/i> evil from Jehovah\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>I did entertain the idea that Moses meant <i>trouble<\/i> as opposed to <i>evil<\/i>.\u00a0 <i>The Israelite foremen saw that they were in trouble<\/i> (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2<\/a>) <i>when they were told, \u201cYou must not reduce the daily quota of your bricks.\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Moses used a different word (albeit the root verb) when he complained to Jehovah about it.\u00a0 <i>Moses returned to the Lord, and said, \u201cLord, why have you caused trouble<\/i> (<i>r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7489\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b2\u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>) <i>for this people? \u00a0Why did you ever send me?\u00a0 From the time I went to speak to Pharaoh in your name, he has caused trouble<\/i> (<i>r\u00e2\u02bda\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7489\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b5\u05e8\u05b7\u05e2<\/a>) <i>for this people, and you have certainly not rescued them!\u201d<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But the third instance was the kicker, if you will.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_repentance\"><\/a><i>Then the Lord relented over the evil<\/i> (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>) <i>that he had said he would do to his people<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is simply a statement of fact, like, <i>In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here the Holy Spirit declared that Jehovah\u2019s <i>apparent<\/i> intent to honor the covenant by destroying the people who violated it would have been evil\u00a0from Jehovah\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 And here for Moses Jehovah Himself modeled the behavior of repentance, giving up his right of vengeance by covenant (by law) for a higher righteousness.\u00a0 <i>Father, if you are willing, take this cup <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn22\">away<\/a> from me<\/i>, He said later, troubled by his own death.\u00a0 <i>Yet not my will but yours be done<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_poison\"><\/a>This brings me <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/01\/son-of-god-1-john-part-2\/\">back<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Genesis+2:9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the tree of the knowledge of good and evil<\/a> (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2<\/a>).\u00a0 <i>We may eat of the fruit from the trees of the orchard <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_Table1\">Table<\/a>], Eve replied to the serpent, <i>but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, \u201cYou must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, or else you will die\u201d<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/11\/01\/westworld-part-3\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/01\/son-of-god-1-john-part-2\/\">Adam\u2019s gezerah<\/a>\u2014<i>and you must not touch it<\/i>\u2014and the alteration (whether Adam\u2019s or Eve\u2019s) of <i>you will surely die<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> to <i>or else you will die<\/i> seems to imply that Adam and Eve thought the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2<\/a>) was poisonous or contained some intrinsic property that caused death.<\/p>\n<p>This opened the door for the serpent to say, <i>Surely you will not die<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Eve handled and tasted the fruit with impunity.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t die.\u00a0 Of course, her eyes weren\u2019t opened and she didn\u2019t become like a divine being knowing good and evil (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d5\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2<\/a>) either.\u00a0 But when she approached her husband with the forbidden fruit she had at least part of the assurance of the shrewdest of <i>any of the wild animals that the Lord God had made<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a> and (with every breath she took) a rapidly increasing quantity of empirical proof that Adam, too, would not die from eating forbidden fruit. \u00a0Adam had only his memory of God\u2019s word.\u00a0 When he ate the forbidden fruit, <i>the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked<\/i>\u2026<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It was unpleasant no doubt, but was it <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/06\/01\/son-of-god-1-john-part-2\/\">death<\/a><\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>My point here is that God did not give Adam knowledge of forbidden fruit when He said, <i>You may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table17\">Table<\/a>]<i>, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote29sym\" name=\"sdfootnote29anc\"><sup>29<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He gave Adam knowledge of God, what God would do; namely, <i>the Lord God expelled him from the orchard in Eden to cultivate the ground from which he had been taken <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/02\/romans-part-6\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<i>. \u00a0When he drove the man out, he placed on the eastern side of the orchard in Eden angelic sentries who used the flame of a whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life<\/i> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/03\/09\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-11\/#_Table13\">Table<\/a>].<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote30sym\" name=\"sdfootnote30anc\"><sup>30<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think it is important not to miss that distinction here as well.\u00a0 When the Holy Spirit says, <i>Then the Lord relented over the evil<\/i> (<i>ra\u02bd<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lexicon\/h7451\/kjv\/wlc\/0-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4<\/a>) <i>that he had said he would do to his people<\/i>, He is teaching me knowledge of God rather than moral philosophy.\u00a0 After this interaction with Moses, He said, <i>I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will proclaim the Lord by name before you; I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/07\/01\/fear-exodus-part-6\/#sdfootnote31sym\" name=\"sdfootnote31anc\"><sup>31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 There is a sense here that He said to Moses my new name is, <i>I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>It is repeated when the event occurred: <i>The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with<\/i> [Moses] <i>there and proclaimed the Lord by name. \u00a0The Lord passed by before him and proclaimed: \u201cThe Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2022\/12\/14\/christianity-part-3\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<i>, keeping loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin\u201d<\/i> [<a protest, \u201cBut the Lord is not a jolly old soul, an easy-going, devil-may-care sort of fellow,\u201d Jehovah continued proclaiming his name: <i>\u201cBut he by no means leaves the guilty
