Love is punishment. That’s the lesson I learned quite well from my elders. As I grew I began to recognize that they were consoling one another and exhorting one another not to compromise with the world around them, a psychological world that was preaching a different gospel. It’s difficult to believe that I never heard 1 Corinthians 13<\/a> as a child, but I don’t recall it. I know Paul’s distinction shocked me as an adult (1 Corinthians 4:21 ESV [Table<\/a>]).<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u1fc3<\/a>)<\/em> in a spirit of gentleness<\/a>?<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though I realized that he probably used the phrase \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c1\u1f71\u03b2\u03b4\u1ff3<\/a>, with a rod<\/i>, hyperbolically for stern or even harsh words, I wouldn’t have distinguished those from love<\/i>, because love is punishment (though I probably thought that love was a feeling that provoked one to punish the objects of one’s love).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the introduction<\/a> to these exploratory essays<\/a> I simply declared \u201cDon’t compromise with the world\u201d a vague and open-ended application, difficult both to obey or to defend against the virtually unlimited latitude those who police such things could assume. Here, I’ll offer an example: <\/span><\/p>\n

In my grandmother’s day, no decent Christian woman would wear lipstick. In my mother’s day, young stay-at-home housewives and mothers put on lipstick, sitting in the pew in church. In my day, young stay-at-home housewives and mothers were trained by professional make-up artists at church women’s groups how to apply their \u201cwarpaint\u201d more effectively, because they competed deliberately and directly with their husbands’ female coworkers and secretaries. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have no idea what goes on now. I no longer attend an upwardly mobile middle class American church. And I don’t write this to criticize three generations of women I have loved. All of us need more grace than the faith that God will punish us for our sins eventually, and more timely and pertinent direction than \u201cDon’t compromise with the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul wrote, what seems at first blush to be, about circumcision, a very specific compromise with the religious world of old covenant Judaism. I want to begin first with the laws of circumcision to highlight this jarring discontinuity between old and new covenants. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/a>With that as background, I’ll turn to the new covenant, one of the things our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a>…that are hard to understand<\/i>2<\/sup><\/a> (Galatians 5:1-5 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

For freedom Christ3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.<\/span><\/span>
\nLook: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ<\/a>, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>The Greek word translated freedom<\/i> in the phrase For freedom<\/i> was \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in the dative case<\/a>. A translator’s note (1<\/a>) in the NET reads:<\/span><\/p>\n

Translating the dative [\u03a4\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>] as \u201cFor freedom\u201d shows the purpose for Christ setting us free; however, it is also possible to take the phrase in the sense of means or instrument (\u201cwith [or by] freedom\u201d), referring to the freedom mentioned in 4:31<\/a> and implied throughout the letter.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a> The slave<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u1f77\u03c3\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03af\u03c3\u03ba\u03b7<\/a>) and the free woman<\/i> (\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) were Hagar and Sarah, understood allegorically as the old covenant and the new respectively (Galatians 4:21-26 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh<\/a>, while the son of the free woman was born through<\/a> promise<\/a>. Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two<\/a> covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now<\/a> Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for<\/a> she is in slavery with her children [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. But the Jerusalem above is free (\u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u1f73\u03c1\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>, and she is our5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> mother.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus had referred to this same allegory<\/i>, except that from his lips it sounds less like an allegory and more like the truth; truth which explains why He<\/a> called Hagar back (Genesis 16<\/a>) to endure Sarai’s harsh treatment, only to be sent away with her son Ishmael at the appropriate time (Genesis 21<\/a>), in order that the story Moses recorded in the Torah could be read by Paul in the Spirit, understood allegorically (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03b3\u03bf\u03c1\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, a participle of \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03b7\u03b3\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) and explained to the Galatians to accomplish the Lord’s intended purpose (John 8:31b-36 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.\u201d They answered him<\/a>, \u201cWe are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, \u2018You will become free\u2019?\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/span><\/span>
\nJesus answered them, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. It’s probably a good idea to pause and reflect on what has been gained here regarding the freedom<\/i> of which Paul wrote: He likened it to being born of a free<\/i> woman, Sarah rather than Hagar. He interpreted<\/i> these women allegorically<\/i> as two covenants<\/i>. Hagar represented the law, the old covenant and the present Jerusalem, which is in slavery with her children. Sarah represented the Jerusalem above<\/i> (\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>), which is free: What is born of the flesh is flesh<\/i>, Jesus said to Nicodemus, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, \u2018You must all be born from above<\/i> (\u1f04\u03bd\u03c9\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>).\u20196<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus offered more detail concerning the slavery of the present Jerusalem and her children: everyone who practices<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) sin is a slave to sin<\/i>. The word order in the critical text (NET parallel Greek<\/a> and NA28<\/sup><\/a>) is: \u03a4\u1fc7<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u1f20\u03bb\u03b5\u03c5\u03b8\u1f73\u03c1\u03c9\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>; literally, \u201cFor freedom us Christ has set free.\u201d The placement of \u1f21\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> adds an emphasis with a flavor nearer to “For our freedom Christ has set free.” But Paul and the Holy Spirit didn’t choose \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> in the genitive case<\/a>. Paul described that freedom to which Christ in his Spirit has set us free elsewhere (Romans 8:2 ESV [Table<\/a>]):<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Paul continued in his letter to the Galatians: stand firm therefore<\/i>. The ESV translators understood the verb \u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> as a 2nd<\/sup> person plural imperative form of \u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>. It is a grammatically permissible way to understand \u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> according to the Koine Greek Lexicon. It even makes some sense, if one assumes that Paul’s purpose was to supply those who were not standing firm with a Scriptural application to obey.<\/span><\/p>\n

My argument is that Paul’s entire discourse in Galatians 5 calls that very assumption into question. There is another grammatically permissible way to understand \u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> according to the Koine Greek Lexicon: as a 2nd<\/sup> person plural form of \u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03c9<\/a> in the indicative mood<\/a>. In other words, Paul stated a fact about those whom Christ has set free\u2014\u201cyou stand firm\u201d\u2014further illustrating the nature of that freedom<\/i> of which he wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Paul continued: and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery<\/i>. The Greek verb \u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c7\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> is an imperative form of \u1f10\u03bd\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a> according to the Koine Greek Lexicon. But the ESV translation do<\/i>…submit<\/i> sounds a bit too much like the active voice. Again, this makes some sense if one assumes that Paul’s purpose was to supply those who were submitting to a yoke of slavery with a Scriptural application to obey: do not submit again to a yoke of slavery<\/i>. But \u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c7\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a> is in the middle\/passive voice<\/a>:\u00a0\u201csubject yourselves to, load yourselves down with, hold yourselves in\u201d or \u201centangle yourselves\u201d or \u201cinvolve yourselves in.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve begun to pay more attention to Greek word order as a way to grasp an author’s tone: \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03bb\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u03b6\u03c5\u03b3\u1ff7<\/a> \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c7\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, \u201cand not (or, cannot<\/em>) again to a yoke of slavery entangle yourselves.\u201d The phrase \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bb\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>\u00a0means \u201cagain and again.\u201d So, if I consider \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03bc\u1f74 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bb\u03b9\u03bd as the phrase \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bb\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> split by the negative particle \u03bc\u1f74<\/a>, I get, \u201cyou cannot again and again to a yoke of slavery entangle yourselves.\u201d Why? Those whom Christ has set free for freedom stand firm and do not obey a yoke of slavery. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul chose the Greek word translated slavery<\/i>\u2014\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>\u2014elsewhere (Romans 8:15 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery (\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, \u201cAbba! Father!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And (Romans 8:20, 21 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

The translation you accept circumcision<\/i> demonstrates how the ESV translators handled a middle\/passive verb without any particular agenda. The Greek word translated advantage<\/i> was \u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the future tense. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul used another form of \u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> elsewhere in a similar context (Romans 2:25 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

For circumcision indeed is of value (\u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, another form of \u1f60\u03c6\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the present tense)<\/em> if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In all my years in locker rooms growing up, I only saw one uncircumcised male. And I didn’t grow up in a Jewish neighborhood. My mother explained that circumcision was performed today for cleanliness. In other words, a young mother can keep her infant son’s penis clean without fondling it overmuch, peeling back his tiny foreskin. My circumcision has become uncircumcision. And I’m glad. It would be terrible if Christ were of no advantage to<\/i> me forever.<\/span><\/p>\n

I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision<\/i>, Paul continued, that he is obligated to keep the whole law<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a> Here the Greek word translated who accepts circumcision<\/i> was \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03b5\u03bc\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u1ff3<\/a>, a middle\/passive participle of the verb \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c4\u03ad\u03bc\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>. Paul and the Holy Spirit are giving us a good primer on middle\/passive verbs in Koine Greek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then Paul’s discourse turned a corner as it were. His main concern was not circumcision as an act in itself. The apostle was actually concerned with the more intimate and pervasive issues of how<\/i> one believes and how<\/i> one obeys (Galatians 5:4 ESV [Table<\/a>]).<\/span><\/p>\n

You are severed from Christ<\/a>, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>I shared this essay with a brother who objected to You are severed<\/i> as a translation of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b3\u1f75\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a passive form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the aorist tense<\/a>. The Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online lists three options for the passive voice: \u201cto be released from, to be severed from, to be removed from.\u201d But since he brought it up, I hear You are severed<\/i> as present<\/a> or perfect tense<\/a>, yet I’m hard-pressed to come up with a better option that would be strictly aorist. And my brother softened some as he saw \u1f00\u03c0\u1f78<\/a> (from<\/i>) explicitly in the text. <\/span><\/p>\n

We know that our old self was crucified with him<\/i>, Paul wrote elsewhere, in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, another passive form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, \u201cmight be released, might be severed, might be removed\u201d), so that we would no longer be enslaved <\/i>(\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) to sin<\/i>.11<\/sup><\/a> Do we then overthrow<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03c1\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the active voice) the law by this faith? Who are they who are severed <\/i>(\u201creleased, removed\u201d) from Christ<\/i>16<\/sup><\/a> and all that union with Christ entails? The circumcised? No, you who would be justified by the law<\/i>: \u03bf\u1f35\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>. The phrase would be justified<\/i> is the ESV translation of \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, a middle\/passive form of the verb \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>. I’m tempted to strengthen the middle voice and forego the passive voice altogether here because of my own experience: \u201cwould justify yourselves.\u201d But I must admit that would be justified<\/i> is a clever word choice for \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, honoring the passive voice even as it highlights the self-righteousness of the action. So, our education in middle\/passive verbs continues.<\/span><\/p>\n
