I want to track \u05e0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b7\u05e3<\/a>\u00a0(n\u0101’ap\u0304<\/em>) in the Old Testament prophets to see if I can find a better understanding of \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a> as used by Jesus, Paul and the New Testament writers.\u00a0 Hosea was a prophet in the northern part of the divided kingdom of Israel during the time when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah ruled Judah <\/em>[the southern kingdom], and during the time when Jeroboam son of Joash<\/em> [Jeroboam II] ruled Israel<\/em>.1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God\u2019s chosen mate for Hosea was not exactly appropriate according to my religious mind (Hosea 1:2-3a NET).<\/p>\n

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, he said to him, \u201cGo marry a prostitute (<\/em>z\u1d4an\u00fbn\u00eem, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em> who will bear illegitimate children conceived through prostitution (<\/em>z\u1d4an\u00fbn\u00eem, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em>, because the nation continually commits (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em> spiritual prostitution (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05ea\u05d6\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em> by turning away from the Lord [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0So Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Apparently, after giving birth to two sons and a daughter, Gomer wearied of her domestic life and returned to her former occupation (Hosea 3:1-5 NET).<\/p>\n

The Lord said to me, \u201cGo, show love to your wife again, even though she loves another man and continually commits adultery (<\/em>n\u0101’ap\u0304, \u05d5\u05de\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05ea<\/a>). \u00a0<\/em>Likewise, the Lord loves the Israelites although they turn to other gods and love to offer raisin cakes to idols.\u201d \u00a0So I paid fifteen shekels of silver and about seven bushels of barley to purchase her. \u00a0Then I told her, \u201cYou must live with me many days; you must not commit adultery (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05ea\u05d6\u05e0\u05d9<\/a>)<\/em> or have sexual intercourse (<\/em>h\u0101y\u00e2, \u05ea\u05d4\u05d9\u05d9<\/a>)<\/em> with another man, and I also will wait for you\u201d [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>.\u00a0 For the Israelites must live many days without a king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred fertility pillar, without ephod or idols. \u00a0Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the Lord their God and their Davidic king. \u00a0Then they will submit to the Lord in fear and receive his blessings in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here I begin to perceive the meaning of committing adultery<\/em> (n\u0101’ap\u0304<\/em>, \u05ea\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a>), why it is unlawful<\/a>, from the mind of God through the prophet Hosea.\u00a0 The Lord<\/em> loves the Israelites although they turn to other gods<\/em>.\u00a0 This turning to other gods<\/em> was equated to adultery<\/em> (n\u0101’ap\u0304<\/em>, \u05d5\u05de\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05ea<\/a>).\u00a0 And the Lord commanded Hosea, Go, show love to your wife again, even though she loves another man and continually commits adultery<\/em> (n\u0101’ap\u0304<\/em>, \u05d5\u05de\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05ea<\/a>) as a prostitute (z\u0101n\u00e2<\/em>, \u05ea\u05d6\u05e0\u05d9<\/a>).\u00a0 Adultery isn\u2019t against God\u2019s law because an adulterous wife hurts my feelings.\u00a0 An adulterous wife hurts my feelings so I may share in this experience of the mind of God, so that I may know Him.<\/p>\n

The Lord had a lot to say to and about the Israelites through Hosea (Hosea 4:1-3 NET):<\/p>\n

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites!\u00a0 For the Lord has a covenant lawsuit against the people of Israel.\u00a0 For there is neither faithfulness nor loyalty in the land, or do they acknowledge God. \u00a0There is only cursing, lying, murder (<\/em>r\u0101\u1e63a\u1e25, \u05d5\u05e8\u05e6\u05d7<\/a>),<\/em> stealing (<\/em>g\u0101na\u1e07, \u05d5\u05d2\u05e0\u05d1<\/a>),<\/em> and adultery (<\/em>n\u0101’ap\u0304, \u05d5\u05e0\u05d0\u05e3<\/a>).<\/em>\u00a0 They resort to violence and bloodshed [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>. \u00a0Therefore the land will mourn, and all its inhabitants will perish.\u00a0 The wild animals, the birds of the sky, and even the fish in the sea will perish.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

None of this happened because the Israelites lacked religion or religious minds (Hosea 4:4-7 NET):<\/p>\n

Do not let anyone accuse or contend against anyone else: for my case is against you priests [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>!\u00a0 You stumble day and night, and the false prophets stumble with you; You have destroyed your own people [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>! \u00a0You have destroyed my people by failing to acknowledge me!\u00a0 Because you refuse to acknowledge me, I will reject you as my priests.\u00a0 Because you reject the law of your God, I will reject your descendants [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>. \u00a0The more the priests increased in numbers, the more they rebelled against me.\u00a0 They have turned their glorious calling into a shameful disgrace [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Lord was very specific about the shameful disgrace<\/em> the priests had made of their glorious calling<\/em>.\u00a0 Apparently, while ignoring almost everything else about God\u2019s law, the priests were very careful to extract their portion of the people\u2019s offerings and sacrifices as specified by the law, and more besides (Hosea 4:8-10 NET):<\/p>\n

They feed on the sin offerings of my people; their appetites long for their iniquity! \u00a0I will deal with the people and priests together: I will punish them both for their ways, and I will repay them for their deeds. \u00a0They will eat, but not be satisfied; they will engage in prostitution (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d4\u05d6\u05e0\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em>, but not increase in numbers; because they have abandoned the Lord by pursuing other gods (<\/em>z\u1d4an\u00fb\u1e6f, \u05d4\u05d6\u05e0\u05d5<\/a>) [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Next the Lord outlined the explicit form this pursuit of other gods took and his reaction to it (Hosea 4:11-14 NET):<\/p>\n

Old and new wine take away the understanding of my people [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>. \u00a0They consult their wooden idols, and their diviner\u2019s staff answers with an oracle.\u00a0 The wind of prostitution (<\/em>z\u1d4an\u00fbn\u00eem, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd<\/a>)<\/em> blows them astray; they commit spiritual adultery (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d5\u05d9\u05d6\u05e0\u05d5<\/a>)<\/em> against their God. \u00a0They sacrifice on the mountaintops, and burn offerings on the hills; they sacrifice under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is so pleasant.\u00a0 As a result, your daughters have become cult prostitutes (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05ea\u05d6\u05e0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery (<\/em>n\u0101’ap\u0304, \u05ea\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>! \u00a0I will not punish your daughters when they commit prostitution (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05ea\u05d6\u05e0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery (<\/em>n\u0101’ap\u0304, \u05ea\u05e0\u05d0\u05e4\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>.\u00a0 For the men consort with harlots (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d4\u05d6\u05e0\u05d5\u05ea<\/a>)<\/em>, they sacrifice with temple prostitutes (<\/em>q\u1d4a\u1e0f\u0113\u0161\u00e2, \u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05e9\u05d5\u05ea<\/a>).<\/em>\u00a0 It is true: \u201cA people that lacks understanding will come to ruin [Table<\/a>]<\/em>!\u201d [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Drunken revelry and orgiastic sex<\/a> were part of the worship<\/em>, part of the sacrifice<\/em> people made to other gods.\u00a0 Men could fulfill their religious obligations<\/em> with the professionals who served the cult (both male and female) or amateurs at religious festivals eager to enhance their spiritual<\/em> status as taught by their religion and compelled by their religious minds<\/em>.\u00a0 Though the northern kingdom of Israel was thoroughly steeped in these religions at this time, the southern kingdom of Jerusalem apparently was not (Hosea 4:15-19 NET).<\/p>\n

Although you, O Israel, commit adultery (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d6\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em>, do not let Judah become guilty!\u00a0 Do not journey to Gilgal!\u00a0 Do not go up to Beth Aven!\u00a0 Do not swear, \u201cAs surely as the Lord lives!\u201d [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>\u00a0 Israel has rebelled like a stubborn heifer!\u00a0 Soon the Lord will put them out to pasture like a lamb in a broad field! \u00a0Ephraim2<\/sup><\/a> <\/em>has attached himself to idols; Do not go near him [Table<\/a>]<\/em>!\u00a0 They consume their alcohol, then engage (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d4\u05d6\u05e0\u05d4<\/a>)<\/em> in cult prostitution (<\/em>z\u0101n\u00e2, \u05d4\u05d6\u05e0<\/a>)<\/em>; they dearly love their shameful behavior [See Addendum<\/a> below]<\/em>. \u00a0A whirlwind has wrapped them in its wings; they will be brought to shame because of their idolatrous worship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And I wonder if this idolatrous worship with its drunken sexual practices was more what Jesus, Paul and the New Testament writers had in mind when they used the word \u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bd\u03b5\u03af\u03b1.<\/p>\n

Apparently both words share a common root: \u05e2\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05dd<\/a> (\u02bf\u0101mam<\/em>).\u00a0 Note 9<\/a> in the NET explained:<\/p>\n

Several textual critics suggest emending the text to read \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05df (ve<\/sup>\u02bfimme<\/sup>kha rivi khohen), \u201cMy contention is with\/against you, O priest!\u201d This involves (1) the revocalization of \u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 (\u201cyour people\u201d) to \u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 (\u201cwith\/against you\u201d) and (2) positing dittography (a letter written twice instead of once) of \u05db\u05bc\u05b0 (kaf) between original \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9 to create \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9 (MT). The <\/em>BHS<\/a> editors suggest that the MT should be emended. However, the editors of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project retain the MT reading with a \u201cB\u201d rating.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The rabbis who translated the Septuagint understood \u05d5\u05e2\u05de\u05da as a form of \u05e2\u05b7\u05dd<\/a> (\u02bfam<\/em>): \u1f41<\/a> \u03b4\u1f72<\/a> \u03bb\u03b1\u1f79\u03c2<\/a>, but my people<\/em>.\u00a0 So, this emendation <\/em>is something beyond the scope of what I\u2019m attempting to study here, and (for the moment) beyond any method I can imagine how <\/em>to study.<\/p>\n
