{"id":25702,"date":"2024-12-30T08:30:29","date_gmt":"2024-12-30T14:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/?p=25702"},"modified":"2025-12-11T18:24:54","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T00:24:54","slug":"exploration-part-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/religiousmind.net\/?p=25702","title":{"rendered":"Exploration, Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_walk\"><\/a>Paul continued to describe the freedom for which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/02\/exploration-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\">Christ<\/a> has set us free<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> (Galatians 5:16 ESV). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><a id=\"_peripateite\"><\/a>But I say<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/le.html#legw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u039b\u1f73\u03b3\u03c9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/de.html#de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f73<\/a>) <i>by the Spirit<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9\u1fbf<\/a>) <i>walk<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripateite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>) is nearer the actual word order. There is a choice here, too: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripateite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> might be understood as an imperative form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripatew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>, or as a statement of fact in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>, \u201cBut I say, by the Spirit you walk.\u201d The ESV translators chose the imperative\u2014<i>walk by the Spirit<\/i>\u2014and so have I up to this moment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though the general trend of my life since <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_demons\">I turned Paul&#8217;s definition of love into rules<\/a> for me to obey has been to abandon the laws of Paul for faith in Jesus Christ, I haven&#8217;t trusted Him with this. Why not? I wonder, now that <i>For our freedom Christ has us set free; therefore you stand firm and cannot entangle yourselves in a yoke of slavery again<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> Now that I&#8217;m hearing this as his work rather than mine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Is there any other reason to believe that Paul wrote <i>foolish Galatians<\/i>, saying, \u201cBut I say, by the Spirit you walk\u201d? To Romans he wrote (Romans 8:3-9 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripatousi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripatew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/on.html#ontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f44\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a present participle of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a>)<\/em> according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God\u2019s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/on.html#ontes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f44\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a present participle of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a>)<\/em> in the flesh <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a>)<\/em> cannot please God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You, however, are not in the flesh <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#ouk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#este\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u1f72<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f76<\/a>)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/04\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-6\/#_ftn3\">but<\/a> in the Spirit <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/en.html#en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>)<\/em>, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#estin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a>)<\/em> to him<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_Table24\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul didn&#8217;t even hint that the <i>foolish Galatians<\/i> did <i>not belong<\/i> to Christ. He called them <i>my <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/13\/exploration-part-2\/#sdfootnote11sym\">little children<\/a>, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/13\/exploration-part-2\/#sdfootnote12sym\">until<\/a> Christ is formed in you!<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> And he added, <i>I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed <\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apor.html#aporoumai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apor.html#aporew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<i> about you<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> And here to the Romans it&#8217;s quite clear he was describing truths to believe rather than works to achieve, the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+8:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>better promises<\/i><\/a> of the new covenant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It occurred to me that I could put this to rest, perhaps, if Paul and the Holy Spirit had another word choice that was exclusively in the indicative mood. But <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripateite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> is the only 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/perip.html#peripatew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the present tense and the active voice listed in the Koine Greek Lexicon online. I&#8217;ll reexamine all my choices and assumptions so far. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Galatians 5:1 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">My first assumption is that the <i>foolish Galatians<\/i>, <i>you<\/i>, are included in <i>For our freedom <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/02\/exploration-part-1\/#sdfootnote3anc\">Christ<\/a> has us set free<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> as opposed to being excluded from that freedom. This assumption is confirmed later: <i>For you to freedom were called, brothers<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> This eliminates the possibility that Paul was describing an elitist Pauline party to which <i>foolish Galatians<\/i> could belong by following the rules of Saint Paul as opposed to the rules of some other unnamed saint heading up some other elitist party. Such elitist parties were associated with the <i>jealousy<\/i> and <i>strife of the flesh<\/i> (1 Corinthians 3:1-8 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote25sym\">But I<\/a>, brothers, could not address you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#_prejudice\">as spiritual people<\/a>, but as people <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote26sym\">of the flesh<\/a>, as infants in Christ. I fed you with <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote29sym\">milk<\/a>, not solid food, for you were not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote30sym\">ready<\/a> for it. And even now you are <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#sdfootnote31sym\">not<\/a> yet ready <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/21\/paul-in-corinth\/#_Table9\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, for you are still of the flesh <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarkikoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarkikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>. For while there is jealousy and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn22\">strife<\/a> among you, are you not of the flesh <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarkikoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u1f77<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sa.html#sarkikos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, \u201cI follow Paul,\u201d and another, \u201cI follow Apollos,\u201d are you <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn23\">not<\/a> being merely <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn24\">human<\/a>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn25\">What<\/a> then is Apollos? <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn26\">What<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn27\">Paul<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn28\">Servants<\/a> through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_ftn29\">but<\/a> God gave the growth <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table10\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_multiplexing\"><\/a>There is one other 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sth.html#sthkw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03c9<\/a> listed in the Koine Greek Lexicon in the present tense and active voice: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sth.html#sthkhte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>. None of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> person plural forms listed is exclusively in the indicative or imperative mood. Perhaps the ESV translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sth.html#sthkete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> (<i>stand firm<\/i> rather than \u201cyou must stand firm\u201d) was intended to be vague enough to let the reader choose between the indicative and imperative moods. My ear, attuned by my background, hears it as a command. My own <i>you stand firm<\/i> may still sound imperative to some, so I&#8217;ll consider the implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe imperative mood is a command or instruction given to the hearer, charging the hearer to carry out or perform a certain action.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> Understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/sth.html#sthkete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03c4\u1f75\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> in the imperative mood casts the freedom for which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/02\/exploration-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\">Christ<\/a> has set us free<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a> as aspirational: If I aspire to the freedom for which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/11\/02\/exploration-part-1\/#sdfootnote3sym\">Christ<\/a> has set us free<\/i>, then I must \u201cperform a certain action,\u201d <i>stand firm<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was a time when I thought Christ&#8217;s death on the cross was mostly aspirational. Since Christ died for my sins I should do A, B, C, etc. and refrain from doing X, Y, Z, etc. The forgiveness of sins was a possible exception, but as Jesus asked rhetorically, <i>which is easier, to say, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\">Your<\/a> sins <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\">are forgiven<\/a>,\u2019 or to say, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/04\/30\/solomons-wealth-part-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Rise<\/a> and walk\u2019?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/12\/30\/exploration-part-5\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a> The general trend of my growing faith since that time has been that the death of the Lord Jesus Christ is more instrumental than aspirational. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul described the Lord&#8217;s death as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Hebrews+8:6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>better promises<\/i><\/a> of the new covenant in Christ (Romans 6:1-6 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What shall we say then? <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn9\">Are we to continue<\/a> in sin that grace may abound? <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_Table11\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
