Dear friends<\/i>, John wrote to fellow believers, let us love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) one another, because love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) is from God, and everyone who loves<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by God and knows<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) God<\/i>.1<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0John used the word \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> over and over again in his letters to describe this love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>).<\/p>\n

For this is the gospel message that you have heard from the beginning: that we should love<\/i> (\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) one another<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>)\u20262<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 We know that we have crossed over from death to life because we love<\/i> (\u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) our fellow Christians<\/i> (\u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03bf\u03cd\u03c2<\/a>).3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Little children<\/a>, let us not love<\/i> (\u03bc\u1f74<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) with word or with tongue<\/i> (\u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u1ff3<\/a> \u03bc\u03b7\u03b4\u1f72<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc7<\/a> \u03b3\u03bb\u03ce\u03c3\u03c3\u1fc3<\/a>) but in deed and truth<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Now this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love <\/i>(\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) one another<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>), just as he gave us<\/a> the commandment<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 No one has seen God at any time. \u00a0If we love<\/i> (\u1f10\u1f70\u03bd<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) one another<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>), God resides in us, and his love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) is perfected in us<\/i>.6<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 We love<\/a><\/i> (\u1f21\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) because he loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) us first<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By this we know that we love<\/i> (\u1f45\u03c4\u03b9<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) the children of God<\/i> (\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u03ad\u03ba\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>): whenever we love God<\/i> (\u1f45\u03c4\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>) and obey<\/i>8<\/sup><\/a> his commandments<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u1f70\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f70\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>).9<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But now I ask you, lady (not as if I were writing<\/a> a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning), that we love<\/i> (\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>)10<\/sup><\/a> one another<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>).11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) is from God<\/i>,12<\/sup><\/a> not from us.\u00a0 It is the love<\/i><\/a> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that does no wrong to a neighbor<\/i>, and the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that is the fulfillment of the law<\/i>.13<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that is patient<\/i>, the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that is kind<\/i>, and the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that does not brag<\/i>.14<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that never ends<\/a><\/i> as opposed to prophecies, tongues and knowledge that will be set aside<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is one of the three that remain<\/i> along with faith<\/i> and hope<\/i>, but the greatest of these is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>).16<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0It is the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) of Christ<\/i>17<\/sup><\/a> that controls <\/i>(\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03ad\u03c7\u03c9<\/a>) us<\/i>,18<\/sup><\/a> and it is the love that holds the preeminent place in the fruit of his Spirit: But the fruit of the Spirit is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>), joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness<\/a>, and self-control. \u00a0Against such things there is no law<\/i> [Table<\/a>].19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

John emphasized, everyone who loves<\/i> has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by God and knows<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) God<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The person who does not love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) me<\/i>, Jesus said, does not obey <\/i>(\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of \u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) my words. \u00a0And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father\u2019s who sent me<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul wrote, the one who loves<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) his neighbor has fulfilled the law<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

This love is the natural (e.g.<\/i>, super-<\/i>natural) state of those born<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) from above<\/i>,23<\/sup><\/a> born<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc7<\/a>) of water and spirit<\/i>,24<\/sup><\/a> not born<\/i> (\u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u00a0\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by human parents<\/i> (\u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> \u1f10\u03be<\/a> \u03b1\u1f31\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, literally, \u201cnot out of blood\u201d) or by human desire<\/i> (\u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f72<\/a> \u1f10\u03ba<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03ba\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, literally, \u201cneither out from the will of the flesh\u201d) or a husband\u2019s decision<\/i> (\u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f72<\/a> \u1f10\u03ba<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03bd\u03b4\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>, literally, \u201cneither out from the will of a husband\u201d), but by God<\/i> (\u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f10\u03ba<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7\u03c3\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, literally, \u201cbut out from God born\u201d).25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

If you know<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u1fc6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9<\/a>) that he is righteous<\/i>, John wrote, you also<\/i>26<\/sup><\/a> know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by him<\/i>.27<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Everyone who has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03bd\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) by God does not practice sin, because God\u2019s seed resides in him, and thus he is not able to sin, because he has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) by God<\/i>.28<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b5\u03b3\u03ad\u03bd\u03bd\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) by God<\/i>\u202629<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I am the good shepherd<\/a><\/i>, Jesus said.\u00a0 I know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) my own and my own know<\/a><\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) me <\/i>[Table<\/a>] \u2013 just as the Father knows<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) me and I know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) the Father \u2013 and I lay down my life for the sheep<\/i>.30<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And John added, The person who does not love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) does not know<\/i> (\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) God, because God is love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>).31<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The point here is not for me to act like a hypocrite and turn Paul\u2019s definition of\u00a0\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> into a list of rules I strive to obey to con people into believing that I have been fathered by God.\u00a0 The point is for me to believe Him and receive all that He has given to me in Christ.<\/p>\n

By this the love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. \u00a0In this is love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em>: not that we have loved<\/a> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ae\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> God, but that he loved (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins [Table<\/a>].32<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Dear friends<\/i> (\u1f08\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03af<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03b7\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/a>), John continued, if God so loved<\/i> (\u1f20\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) us, then we also ought to love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) one another. \u00a0No one has seen God at any time. \u00a0If we love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) one another, God resides in us, and his love <\/i>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) is perfected in us<\/i>.33<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Once again, lest I stray into hypocrisy believing that this \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 originates with me so that I may prove that God resides in me, John made it plain.\u00a0 By this we know<\/i> (\u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) that we reside in God and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit<\/i>,34<\/sup><\/a> both gifts<\/a> and fruit<\/a>. \u00a0And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world<\/i>,35<\/sup><\/a> i.e., through his \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> (God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him<\/i>).<\/p>\n

Then John connected knowing and believing this \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7 with confessing that Jesus is the Son of God:\u00a0 If anyone<\/a> confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0And we have come to<\/i> know <\/i>(\u1f10\u03b3\u03bd\u03ce\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b3\u03b9\u03bd\u03ce\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) and to believe<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03ba\u03b1\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9<\/a>) the love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that God has in us <\/i>[Table<\/a>].36<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I began this study of the Son of God because I was curious<\/a>37<\/sup><\/a> how Peter, James and John followed through on Jesus\u2019 command to tell (after his resurrection)38<\/sup><\/a> about the vision when a voice from the cloud said, \u201cThis is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. \u00a0Listen to him!\u201d<\/i>39<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Peter obeyed Jesus\u2019 command to the letter.\u00a0 He recounted the story of the transfiguration.40<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But John wrote more in the spirit of Jesus\u2019 command about the Son of God and all that meant.\u00a0 From the very beginning of his ministry Paul proclaimed that Jesus was the Son of God: For several days<\/i> [Paul]41<\/sup><\/a> was with the disciples in Damascus <\/i>[Table<\/a>], and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus<\/a> in the synagogues, saying, \u201cThis man is the Son of God\u201d <\/i>[Table<\/a>]42<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And the writings of John and Paul most vividly portray the truth, And we have come to<\/i> know and to believe<\/i> the love<\/i> that God has in us<\/i>. \u00a0I can\u2019t say much about Peter\u2019s knowledge or faith<\/a>, but his writing did not convey this same knowledge and faith in God\u2019s love.<\/p>\n

You have not seen<\/a> him<\/i>, Peter wrote, but you love (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) him. \u00a0You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy <\/i>[Table<\/a>], because you are attaining the goal of your faith \u2013 the salvation of your souls<\/i>.43<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sounds like my feeling for Jesus rather than his \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> in us<\/i>.\u00a0 You have purified your souls by obeying the truth<\/a><\/i>, Peter continued, in order to show sincere mutual love<\/i> (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>). \u00a0So love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ae\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) one another earnestly from a pure heart<\/i>.44<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This sounds like our love for each other.\u00a0 Perhaps brotherly affection<\/i> and \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> were essentially interchangeable in the Greek language when Peter wrote. \u00a0But this usage doesn\u2019t indicate any appreciation for the meaning that Paul ascribed to the \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> from God, or that John carried forward in his Gospel and letters.<\/p>\n

Peter continued to make brotherly affection<\/i> equivalent to \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>.\u00a0 Honor all people, love<\/a><\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>) the family of believers, fear God, honor the king<\/i>.45<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Above<\/a> all keep your love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) for one another fervent, because<\/i> love <\/i><\/b>(\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) covers<\/a> a multitude of sins<\/i><\/b>.<\/i>46<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The love<\/i> in this quotation of Proverbs 10:12 was \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a> in the Septuagint<\/a> not \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>.\u00a0 And Peter used \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> to describe a religious rite: Greet one another with a loving<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) kiss<\/i>.47<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

He did grant some ascendency to \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> over \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u1fb3<\/a> (brotherly affection<\/i>) when he wrote, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection<\/i> (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>); to brotherly affection<\/i> (\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b1\u03b4\u03b5\u03bb\u03c6\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>), unselfish love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>).48<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But while I was busy adding all of these things to my faith I failed to understand that God\u2019s divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence<\/a><\/i>.49<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Or I thought the rich knowledge of the one who called us <\/i>and the key to this life and godliness<\/i> was the law.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

In other words I mistook the knowledge of sin50<\/sup><\/a> for the knowledge of God,51<\/sup><\/a> that intimate form of knowing alluded to in Romans 7:4<\/a>, God is <\/i>\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>,52<\/sup><\/a> \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> is from God<\/i>,53<\/sup><\/a> and \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> is the fulfillment <\/i>(\u03c0\u03bb\u03ae\u03c1\u03c9\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>; fulfilling<\/i> KJV<\/a>) of the law<\/i>.54<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets<\/i>, Jesus said.\u00a0 I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill<\/i> (\u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u1ff6\u03c3\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>) them<\/i>.55<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apart from Paul\u2019s and John\u2019s writings I never would have understood that this \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> from God<\/i> was the fruit of the Spirit, and, in a word, the credited righteousness<\/a> of God.<\/p>\n

God is love<\/i>, John wrote, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides<\/a> in him <\/i>[Table<\/a>]. \u00a0By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world. \u00a0There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. \u00a0The one who fears punishment has not been perfected in love. \u00a0We love<\/a> because he loved us first<\/i> [Table<\/a>].56<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. \u00a0And his commandments do not weigh us down, because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers the world.\u00a0 This is the conquering power that has conquered the world: our<\/i>57<\/sup><\/a> faith<\/i> [i.e.<\/i>, in Him, yes, and in this love<\/i> (\u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>) that God has in us<\/i>; Table<\/a>]. \u00a0Now<\/i>58<\/sup><\/a> who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?<\/i>59<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

If we accept the testimony of men<\/i>, John continued, the testimony of God is greater<\/i> [referring, I think, to the vision of the transfiguration], because this is the testimony of God that<\/i>60<\/sup><\/a> he has testified concerning his Son. \u00a0(The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself;<\/i>61<\/sup><\/a> the one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.)<\/i>62<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And this is the testimony<\/i>\u2026 And here, I think, John made the \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> from God<\/i> functionally equivalent63<\/sup><\/a> to the life that is eternal (Love never ends<\/a><\/i>).64<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. \u00a0The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life. \u00a0I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life<\/i>.65<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

It takes a religious mind to be in close proximity to this \u1f00\u03b3\u03ac\u03c0\u03b7<\/a> from God<\/i> and yet reject it for the self-aggrandizing vindication of religious works.\u00a0 For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness<\/i>.69<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there, and I\u2019ve done that.<\/p>\n

I now regard all things as liabilities compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things \u2013 indeed, I regard them as dung<\/a>! \u2013 that I may gain Christ [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, \u00a0and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness \u2013 a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness. \u00a0My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like<\/a> him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from<\/a> the dead [Table<\/a>].70<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
