That \u201cscript\u201d became the defining rules of conduct for my new character, the part I would play from then on forever. I didn&#8217;t recognize this as <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/\">hypocrisy<\/a> because I was sincerely trying to do better, and I didn&#8217;t believe the fruit of the Spirit was the Spirit&#8217;s fruit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though I hadn&#8217;t thought about it quite as formally as I had about Paul&#8217;s description of God&#8217;s love, I believed instinctively almost that the fruit of the Spirit was more rules for me to obey:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Thou shalt exhibit the fruit of the Spirit: Thou shalt love (See <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Corinthians 13<\/a> for specific details). Thou shalt exhibit joy. Thou shalt live in peace. Thou shalt demonstrate patience. Thou shalt show kindness. Thou shalt demonstrate goodness. Thou shalt exhibit faithfulness. Thou shalt show gentleness. Thou shalt exhibit self-control. Against such things there is no law (e.g., such things are the law). <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[Hypocrisy] \u201cembodies a purposeful intent, which stems from a deep-seated core of evil\u201d [<i>e.g.<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Ephesians+4:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>the old man<\/i><\/a>], the conclusion of the entry \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bibleone.net\/print_es3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hypocrite<\/a>\u201d on <a href=\"http:\/\/bibleone.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bibleone.net<\/a> online reads. The corruption of the old man&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Ephesians+4:22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>deceitful desires<\/i><\/a> includes the desire to have <i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> as well as the feeling that I am actively engaged in the pursuit of righteousness when I do so, despite the actual situation being that I was <i>severed from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Christ<\/a><\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> and had turned away from <i>the kingdom <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn40\">of God<\/a> and his righteousness<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiosunhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u03cd\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>; <i>e.g.<\/i>, not \u201cmy own righteousness\u201d). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was an additional criteria to meet, however, in the conclusion of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bibleone.net\/print_es3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hypocrite<\/a>\u201d on <a href=\"http:\/\/bibleone.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bibleone.net<\/a> online:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">More than this, it suggests a determined effort to enforce a standard of conduct upon others, which conduct the enforcer knowingly and deliberately refuses to apply to himself&#8211;hence, action born of full knowledge and evil intent&#8230;It is the condition of a person who is controlled by the sin nature to the end-desire of having power over other human beings by imposing on them a set of rules, which he himself intentionally disregards.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I failed to meet that criteria (which, by the way, I don&#8217;t regard as necessary to Jesus&#8217; intent). But it is curious. As legalistic as I was with myself, I don&#8217;t recall <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Romans+7:2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preaching Paul<\/a> to my wife. Perhaps it is selective memory, but if I had harped on <i>the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> I think I would remember. My mother was <i>bound by law<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ded.html#dedetai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f73\u03b4\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>) to a husband for whom she no longer felt any affection or respect, and with whom she no longer lived\u2014my father. She was miserable. He was miserable. We all suffered to various degrees. I suppose, I didn&#8217;t actually want a wife who was <i>bound by law <\/i>to me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s a shame I didn&#8217;t apply that learning to my relationship to God sooner (Matthew 7:12; John 14:15 NASB).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cTherefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/21\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-3\/#sdfootnote57sym\">however<\/a> you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/08\/21\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-4-part-3\/#_Table25\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cIf you love Me, you will keep My commandments.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is possible that I followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">golden rule<\/a> with my wife to some extent. It didn&#8217;t occur to me to follow it with the Lord. And I didn&#8217;t hear <i>If you love Me, you will keep My commandments<\/i> as Jesus&#8217; promise. I heard another rule: how <em>to love<\/em> Jesus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I didn&#8217;t yet study the New Testament in Greek. Though I had begun to use a concordance to track the word usage of select Greek and Hebrew words through the Bible, I didn&#8217;t bother to learn that <i>you will keep<\/i> was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#threw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the future tense and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>. I didn&#8217;t yet understand that the \u201cindicative mood is a statement of fact or an actual occurrence from the writer&#8217;s or speaker&#8217;s perspective.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> I hadn&#8217;t taken a college course in formal logic yet: I didn&#8217;t understand that my attempt to keep his commandments as rules I obeyed wouldn&#8217;t necessarily prove my love for Him, but was a logical fallacy called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Affirming_the_consequent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affirming the consequent<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">John wrote (1 John 4:19-21 NASB):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We love,<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote9sym\" name=\"sdfootnote9anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/em> because He first loved us. If someone says, \u201cI love God,\u201d and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote10sym\" name=\"sdfootnote10anc\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_promise\"><\/a>I didn&#8217;t know yet that the Greek word translated <i>should love<\/i> was <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agap.html#agapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u1fb7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/agap.html#agapaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03b3\u03b1\u03c0\u03ac\u03c9<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>, another statement of fact. The <i>commandment<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ent.html#entolhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>) <i>we have from him<\/i> is apparently of the\u2014<i>And God said, \u201cLet there be light,\u201d and there was light<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote11sym\" name=\"sdfootnote11anc\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a>\u2014variety. But I thought John meant that since Jesus died for my sins, I should have an emotional response that resulted in love for God and others. Or, even if I lacked that emotional response or it was too weak or inconsistent to produce that result, love was the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even as I attempted to love like God by obeying rules, I continued to read the Bible in English translation. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I began to wonder if, perhaps, God&#8217;s love\u2014with which <i>He first loved us<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/aut.html#autos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/prw.html#prwtos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03c1\u1ff6\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hg.html#hgaphse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f20\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/hm.html#hmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f21\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>)\u2014was not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/08\/05\/atonement-part-2\/#_finished\">all finished<\/a> at the cross of Christ (John 14:15-26 NASB).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cIf you love Me, you will keep My commandments.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn13\">And I<\/a> will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn14\">He may be<\/a> with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewrei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewrew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> Him or know <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn15\">Him<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn16\">but<\/a> you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_Table18\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u201cI will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. \u201cAfter a little while the world will behold <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewrei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewrew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> Me no more; but you will behold <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewreite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, another from of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qewrew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> Me; because I live, you shall live<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote12sym\" name=\"sdfootnote12anc\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> also. \u201cIn that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote13sym\" name=\"sdfootnote13anc\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in you. \u201cHe who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn17\">and I<\/a> will love him, and will disclose Myself to him.\u201d Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, \u201cLord, what <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn18\">then<\/a> has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us, and not to the world?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn19\">Jesus<\/a> answered and said to him, \u201cIf anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn20\">make<\/a> Our abode with him <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_Table19\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. \u201cHe who does not love Me does not keep My words; I will come to you<\/i>, Jesus promised after promising that his <i>Father will give you another Helper, that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn14\">He may be<\/a> with you forever<\/i>&#8230;<i>the Spirit of truth<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote14sym\" name=\"sdfootnote14anc\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a> And speaking of his Father&#8217;s love for the one who loves Jesus (<i>he will keep <\/i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsei2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/th.html#thrhsei2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u03b7\u03c1\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the future tense and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>]<i> My word<\/i>), He said, <i>We will come to him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/30\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-3\/#_ftn20\">make<\/a> Our abode with him<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote15sym\" name=\"sdfootnote15anc\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NASB):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? While I wouldn&#8217;t suggest that the <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+18:20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collective body<\/a> is excluded somehow, these words were penned in response to the potential and prescribed actions of an individual (1 Corinthians 6:16-18 NASB): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Or do you not know that the one who joins himself <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kol.html#kollwmenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, \u201cTHE TWO WILL BECOME ONE FLESH.\u201d But the one who joins himself <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/o.html#o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f41<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/de.html#de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u1f72<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kol.html#kollwmenos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f7d\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Truths began to align in perspicuous form:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We love, because He first loved us.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote16sym\" name=\"sdfootnote16anc\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you love [Jesus], you will keep [his] commandments.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote17sym\" name=\"sdfootnote17anc\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote18sym\" name=\"sdfootnote18anc\"><sup>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even without a college course in formal logic, statements 2 and 3 sounded like conditional promises to me. Would Jesus make even a conditional promise predicated on my weak and wavering emotions of love and gratitude? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One advantage of treating Paul&#8217;s description of God&#8217;s love as rules to obey was that it kept the depth and detail of his description of love ever before me. It seemed like an awful lot to ask of the human emotions of affection and gratitude. Another advantage was that even my laws derived from Paul&#8217;s description of God&#8217;s love functioned like <i>the law<\/i> [that] <i>was<\/i> [my] \u201cservant whose office it was to take\u201d me \u201cto school,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/School_of_Hard_Knocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the school of hard knocks<\/a>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote19sym\" name=\"sdfootnote19anc\"><sup>19<\/sup><\/a> My act, based on my rules derived from Paul&#8217;s description of God&#8217;s love, wasn&#8217;t working out all that well. Though doing \u201cincrementally better\u201d seemed positive relative to my former actions, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/02\/jedidiah-part-2\/#_worked\">incrementally better<\/a>\u201d was a very long way from the righteousness described by \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/14\/davids-forgiveness-part-6\/#_newlaw\">my new law<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why didn&#8217;t I just give up? Well, I did from time to time. That didn&#8217;t seem to matter all that much. Despite my best efforts to do otherwise, I was working out my <i>own salvation with fear and trembling, for it<\/i> [was] <i><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/12\/28\/father-forgive-them-part-5\/#_ftn39\">God<\/a> who<\/i> [worked] <i>in<\/i> [me], <i>both to will and to work for his good pleasure<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote20sym\" name=\"sdfootnote20anc\"><sup>20<\/sup><\/a> And it is God who continues to work in me, <i>both to will and to work for his good pleasure<\/i>. I wasn&#8217;t entirely oblivious to his working. It just seemed so on again, off again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I wanted his working to be on again more often than off again, but I wasn&#8217;t yet recognizing that on-again-off-again phenomena as evidence of the conflict of <i>the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote21sym\" name=\"sdfootnote21anc\"><sup>21<\/sup><\/a> and <i>the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote22sym\" name=\"sdfootnote22anc\"><sup>22<\/sup><\/a> I thought it had more to do with the mercurial nature of god (<i>e.g.<\/i>, the false god of my imagination). But He was working on that, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He made sure that I <i>would be renewed in the spirit of<\/i> [my] <i>mind<\/i>,<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote23sym\" name=\"sdfootnote23anc\"><sup>23<\/sup><\/a> providing both a hunger for, and a growing satisfaction with, his Word\u2014the Lord Jesus Christ\u2014through the written words of the Bible. I began to suspect that the love with which <i>He first loved us<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote24sym\" name=\"sdfootnote24anc\"><sup>24<\/sup><\/a> meant something more than my emotional response to the Lord&#8217;s death on my behalf. <i>But the fruit of the Spirit is love<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> and <i>walk by the Spirit<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> seemed like tantalizing clues to that \u201csomething more.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My wife had moved out. My friend John had moved in to help with expenses. I was back at the church where I had become an atheist, believing that they \u201cwere right and I was wrong.\u201d John attended a different church. We studied the Bible individually and together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We thought and spoke to one another in theological jargon. We knew that salvation was divided into three parts: justification, sanctification and glorification. We knew that <i>justification<\/i> and <i>glorification<\/i> were works of God in Christ, received through faith. We also \u201cknew\u201d that <i>sanctification<\/i> was by our own works (James 2:19-24 NASB):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote27sym\" name=\"sdfootnote27anc\"><sup>27<\/sup><\/a><\/em> Was not Abraham our father justified <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edikaiwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> by works, when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/\">with his works<\/a>, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, \u201cAND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,\u201d<em><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote28sym\" name=\"sdfootnote28anc\"><sup>28<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and he was called the friend of God. You <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn30\">see<\/a> that a man is justified <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioutai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> by works, and not by faith alone <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_Table14\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Granted, there is no mention of <i>sanctification<\/i> here, yet the principle of adding <i>my<\/i> works to faith in Jesus Christ seemed thoroughly established. And the idea that sanctification was the place where my works came into play in my salvation seemed to accord well with the teaching of two different non-Lutheran, non-Catholic churches\u2014John&#8217;s and mine. About this time, though John remained faithful to the KJV, I switched from studying the NASB to the NIV out of deference to a mentor who was discipling me (James 2:19-24 NIV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that\u2014and shudder.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/09\/26\/romans-part-18\/\">considered righteous<\/a> for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, \u201cAbraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,\u201d and he was called God\u2019s friend. You <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_ftn30\">see<\/a> that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2021\/01\/26\/who-am-i-part-12\/#_Table14\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Translating both <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ed.html#edikaiwqh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaioutai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> <i>considered righteous<\/i> sealed the deal for me. Who would be considered righteous but the one who did righteousness? And <i>sanctification<\/i> was the only part of salvation left to add my works of righteousness to faith. So, sanctification was by my works. Jesus seemed totally on board with that (Luke 18:18-24 NIV). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A certain ruler asked him, \u201cGood teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cWhy do you call me good?\u201d Jesus answered. \u201cNo one is good\u2014except God alone. Even if I allowed that <i>come, follow me<\/i> was an allusion to faith, the ratio of my works added to my faith seemed roughly equivalent to Peter&#8217;s admonition to <i>make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote37sym\" name=\"sdfootnote37anc\"><sup>37<\/sup><\/a> Even my Dad quoted: \u201cpray as if everything depends on God, and work as if everything depends on you.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote38sym\" name=\"sdfootnote38anc\"><sup>38<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The only fly in the ointment was Paul (Galatians 5:4 NIV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You who are trying to be justified <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiousqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dik.html#dikaiow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>; \u201cconsidered righteous\u201d?)<\/em> by the law have been alienated from <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#sdfootnote8sym\">Christ<\/a>; you have fallen away from grace <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/24\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-2\/#_Table3\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Only Paul seemed uncompromising on this point. Jesus was uncompromising in what seemed like the opposite direction (Matthew 5:48 NIV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Be perfect, therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn10\">as<\/a> your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn11\">heavenly<\/a> Father is perfect <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_Table40\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How could both statements be true? I might have given up right then and there, except that I had moments\u2014all too brief moments\u2014when love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control flowed into me as if from an external source. And that love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control seemed to dominate (cause?) my actions. It was on-again-off-again, more off-again than on-again at that time. But it made me wonder if the fruit of the Spirit might, perhaps, just possibly, maybe, have more to do with God than with me (but that would be cheating, wouldn&#8217;t it?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I still thought the on-again-off-again nature of my experience of the fruit of the Spirit was due to the mercurial nature of god (<i>e.g.<\/i>, the false god of my imagination), but this time I recognized that it might be in response to me. I even began to use the words\u2014<i>the old man<\/i> and <i>the new man<\/i>\u2014to rationalize that phenomena, though I still recognized them only as a kind of shorthand for my works before Christ and what my works should be after Christ. The almighty <i>I<\/i> decided which works were manifest. They were still <i>my works<\/i> accomplished by <i>my will<\/i> according to <i>my obedience<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I had not yet quit my factory job to study to prepare for writing the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/27\/davids-forgiveness-part-2\/#_tripartite\">Tripartite Rationality Index<\/a>.\u201d I had not yet come to terms with my unexamined faith \u201cthat faith was opposed to reason as reason was opposed to faith.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote39sym\" name=\"sdfootnote39anc\"><sup>39<\/sup><\/a><\/span> And I had not even begun to recognize my antipathy to faith.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yet after that amazing time [e.g., studying to write the \u201cTripartite Rationality Index\u201d] I was still disgruntled. Writing this has forced me to ask myself why. The answer that comes to me is that I was not actually as open-minded as I like to remember the story. I was trying to find a rational alternative to faith (i.e., that arrived at the same conclusions but required no faith). My best effort was indistinguishable from faith. In other words, I had failed. So as the Lord and I did our postmortem on those years, I said the time was better than I had expected (recalling <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2013\/02\/09\/you-must-be-gentle-part-3\/#_prayers\">my parents and hitting a baseball<\/a>), but that I was still inclined to wish for never having been born.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote40sym\" name=\"sdfootnote40anc\"><sup>40<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_EXP8\"><\/a>It would be many years before I learned that, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Koine Greek Lexicon<\/a> online, the verb of being <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/es.html#esesqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c3\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>, translated <i><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/esesthe_1510.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be<\/a><\/i> in the phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/Matthew+5:48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Be perfect<\/i><\/a>, was a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eim.html#eimi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03bc\u03af<\/a> in the future tense and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>: \u201cThe indicative mood is a statement of fact or an actual occurrence from the writer&#8217;s or speaker&#8217;s perspective.\u201d In other words, Jesus promised: \u201cYou will be perfect, therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn10\">as<\/a> your <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_ftn11\">heavenly<\/a> Father is perfect [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/08\/13\/father-son-and-holy-spirit-part-3\/#_Table40\">Table<\/a>].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The confusion that resulted from my experience\u2014that I did \u201cincrementally better\u201d as an actor attempting to love like God by obeying rules of love as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/01\/31\/hypocrisy\/#_choices\">choices<\/a>\u201d made by my new character\u2014is no longer an issue. Of course, an actor attempting to imitate God does \u201cincrementally better\u201d than one slavishly obeying the dictates of the <i>old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote41sym\" name=\"sdfootnote41anc\"><sup>41<\/sup><\/a> Some actors are better than others. But a righteousness of one&#8217;s own achieved by obeying rules as an actor plays a part is not <i>the righteousness of God<\/i>&#8230;<i>revealed<\/i> [<i>in the gospel<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote42sym\" name=\"sdfootnote42anc\"><sup>42<\/sup><\/a>] <i>from faith for faith<\/i>;<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote43sym\" name=\"sdfootnote43anc\"><sup>43<\/sup><\/a> it is certainly not <i>the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness<\/i> [that causes one to] <i>reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote44sym\" name=\"sdfootnote44anc\"><sup>44<\/sup><\/a> Though hypocrisy is not the unforgivable sin, it is an attempt to be justified by law and a falling away from grace.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/#sdfootnote45sym\" name=\"sdfootnote45anc\"><sup>45<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But God&#8217;s love wasn&#8217;t finished at the cross.
