If it is service<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), Paul wrote, to continue considering the different gifts (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) that comprise the diversity of oneness<\/a>, he must serve<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul wrote to the Corinthians about different gifts<\/i> (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>) and different ministries<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>): the message of wisdom<\/i>\u2026the message of knowledge<\/i>\u2026faith<\/i>\u2026gifts <\/i>(\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/a>) of healing<\/i>\u2026performance of miracles<\/i>\u2026prophecy<\/i>\u2026discernment of spirits<\/i>\u2026different kinds of tongues<\/i>, and<\/i>\u2026the interpretation of tongues<\/i> [Table<\/a>].2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Yet in the previous chapter of Romans Paul wrote, Seeing that<\/a> I am an apostle<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)\u20263<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 As I consider this and the historical fact that most of the different ministries<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03b9\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) listed in 1 Corinthians above were associated with Jesus\u2019 apostles, I assume that the ministry (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of an apostle was the service<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) Paul had primarily in mind in Romans 12.<\/p>\n

Still, the service<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) most associated with the apostles is the ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of reconciliation<\/i>: God<\/i>\u2026reconciled us to himself through Christ<\/a>, and<\/i>\u2026has given us the ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of reconciliation<\/i>.4<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0And the ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of reconciliation<\/a><\/i> is nothing less than the ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) of the Spirit<\/i>, the ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) that produces righteousness<\/i> (2 Corinthians 3:7-9 NET).<\/p>\n

But if the ministry (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> that produced death<\/a> \u2013 carved in letters on<\/a> stone tablets \u2013 came with glory, so that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on the face of Moses<\/a> because of the glory of his face (a glory which was made ineffective) [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, how much more glorious will the ministry (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of the Spirit be?\u00a0 For if there was glory in the<\/a> ministry (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> that produced condemnation, how much more does the ministry (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> that produces righteousness<\/a> excel in<\/a> glory! [Table<\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was<\/i> [Jesus], Paul wrote the Ephesians, who gave some as apostles<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)\u20265<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And God has placed in the church first apostles<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03c3\u03c4\u03cc\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), he wrote the Corinthians.\u00a0 Not all are apostles<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), are they?<\/i>7<\/sup><\/a> Paul asked rhetorically.<\/p>\n

If<\/i> [the gift] is teaching<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>), Paul continued in Romans, he must teach<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).8<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 In Corinth the Lord said to Paul by a vision in the night<\/a>, \u201cDo not be afraid,but speak and do not be silent, because I am with you, and no one will assault you to harm you, because I have<\/a> many people in this city\u201d <\/i>[Table<\/a>].\u00a0 So<\/i>9<\/sup><\/a> he stayed there a year and six months, teaching<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) the word of God among them<\/i>.10<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Paul<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> lived<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> [in Rome] two whole years in his own rented quarters and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>) about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete boldness and without restriction <\/i>[Table<\/a>].13<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

I was appointed<\/i>, Paul wrote Timothy, a preacher and apostle<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) and teacher<\/a><\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)14<\/sup><\/a> of the fact that our Savior Christ Jesus<\/i>\u2026has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Apparently Timothy was also appointed as a teacher.\u00a0 Until I come<\/i>, Paul wrote to him, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).16<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And he continued (1 Timothy 4:14-16 NET):<\/p>\n

Do not neglect the spiritual gift (\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03af\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words (\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5\u03af\u03b1<\/a>) <\/em>when the elders laid hands on you.\u00a0 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.\u00a0 Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0<\/em> Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was<\/i> [Jesus], Paul wrote the Ephesians, who gave some<\/i>\u2026as pastors and teachers (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), to equip the saints for the work of ministry<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/a>), that is, to build up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God \u2013 a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ\u2019s full stature<\/i>.17<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And God has placed in the church<\/i>\u2026third teachers<\/i>18<\/sup><\/a> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), he wrote the Corinthians.\u00a0 Not all are teachers<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>), are they?<\/i> He asked rhetorically.\u00a0 He also gave Timothy the following prophetic warning (2 Timothy 4:3 NET):<\/p>\n

\u00a0For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound (\u1f51\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03cd\u03c3\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/a>) <\/em>teaching (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).\u00a0<\/em> Instead, following their own desires<\/a>, they will accumulate teachers (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, another form of \u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03ac\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things [Table<\/a>].<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, the teachers most honored by people and the teachers spiritually gifted to equip the saints for the work of ministry<\/i>, to build up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God \u2013 a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ\u2019s full stature<\/i>, may not be one and the same.\u00a0 But the next gift to consider may provide a method for distinguishing between the two.<\/p>\n

Paul wrote again about receiving God\u2019s exhortation through the message brought by Titus:\u00a0 But God, who encourages <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) the downhearted, encouraged<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03ba\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) us by the arrival of Titus<\/i>.\u00a0 We were encouraged not only by his arrival, but also by the encouragement<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>) you gave<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>) him, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your deep concern for me, so that I rejoiced more than ever<\/i>.21<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

The Corinthians\u2019 longing, mourning and deep concern for Paul also exhorted him: I have great confidence in you; I take great pride on your behalf.\u00a0 I am filled with encouragement<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>); I am overflowing with joy in the midst of all our suffering<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Therefore we have been encouraged<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b5\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1<\/a>, another form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03ad\u03c9<\/a>). \u00a0And in addition to our<\/i>23<\/sup><\/a> own encouragement<\/i> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), we rejoiced even more at the joy of Titus, because all of you have refreshed his spirit<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 And Paul told Timothy not only to teach but to comfort and encourage his people in a similar manner: Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), to teaching<\/i> (\u03b4\u03b9\u03b4\u03b1\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).25<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

A teacher\u2019s exhortation reveals that teacher\u2019s knowledge and faith.\u00a0 It may even be another valid way to test the spirits to determine if they are from God<\/i>.26<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Surely the Spirit from God knows the depth <\/i>(\u03b2\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God<\/i>,27<\/sup><\/a> that from him and through him and to him are all things<\/i>.28<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0For the Spirit searches<\/a> all things, even the deep<\/i> (\u03b2\u03ac\u03b8\u03b7<\/a>, a form of \u03b2\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>) things of God<\/i>.29<\/sup><\/a> \u00a0Every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God<\/i>,30<\/sup><\/a> John wrote.\u00a0 Does a given teacher comfort me with the knowledge of the love<\/i> that God has in us<\/i>, or encourage me to believe<\/i> the love that God has in us<\/a><\/i>31<\/sup><\/a> in Jesus, the Christ who has come in the flesh<\/i>, the Son of God, through his Holy Spirit?\u00a0 Or does that teacher rob me of such comfort, and encourage me to know or to believe or to do something else instead?<\/p>\n
