Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> He continued describing the fruit (<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/02\/21\/exploration-part-8\/\">result<\/a>) of the Spirit (Galatians 5:25-6:5 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/12\/pauls-religious-mind\/#sdfootnote21sym\">gentleness<\/a>. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another\u2019s burdens, and so <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn58\">fulfill<\/a> the law of Christ <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_Table16\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_since\"><\/a>Since we live by the Spirit<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Greek is: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ei.html#ei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u0395\u1f30<\/a>, <i>If <\/i>(or, \u201cSince\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zw.html#zwmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, <i>we live<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pn.html#pneumati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, <i>by the Spirit<\/i>. The Greek word <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zw.html#zwmen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1ff6\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/za.html#zaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>, could be understood in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicative mood<\/a>, as \u201ca statement of fact,\u201d or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>, as an action that \u201cwill possibly happen, depending on certain objective factors or circumstances.\u201d The translation <i>we live<\/i>, rather than <i>we may live<\/i>, acknowledges the indicative mood. Paul had written of himself (Galatians 2:19 ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here the Greek was: <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egw.html#egw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ga.html#gar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b3\u1f70\u03c1<\/a>, <i>For I<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/dia.html#dia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b4\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, <i>through the law<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>, <i>to the law<\/i> (or, \u201cby means of the law\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apeq.html#apeqanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, <i>died<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, <i>so that<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qe.html#qew2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b5\u1ff7<\/a>, <i>to God<\/i> (or, \u201cby means of God\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, <i>I might live<\/i>. Here <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/zh.html#zhsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u1f75\u03c3\u03c9<\/a>, another form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/za.html#zaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b6\u03ac\u03c9<\/a>, was in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntgreek.org\/learn_nt_greek\/verbs1.htm#MOOD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjunctive mood<\/a>, though the conjunction <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/in.html#ina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> indicates that it is part of a result clause.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8230;if the subjunctive mood is used in a purpose or result clause, then the action should not be thought of as a possible result, but should be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this instance \u201canother stated action\u201d was \u201cI through the law by means of the law died\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apeq.html#apeqanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f73\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apoq.html#apoqnhskw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03b8\u03bd\u03ae\u03c3\u03ba\u03c9<\/a>. Was this a unique and special achievement of Paul&#8217;s? <i>Likewise, my brothers, you also have died<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eq.html#eqanatwqhte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u1f7d\u03b8\u03b7\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qa.html#qanatow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03cc\u03c9<\/a>; literally, \u201cyou have been put to death\u201d) <i>to the law<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/tw.html#tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/no.html#nomw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>; or, \u201cby means of the law\u201d) <i>through the body of Christ<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He wrote elsewhere (Romans 6:3, 4 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qa.html#qanaton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u1f71\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/qa.html#qanatos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b8\u03ac\u03bd\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em>? So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epit.html#epiteleisqe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5<\/a>). It is only achieved <i>by hearing with faith<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ex.html#ex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03be<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ako.html#akohs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/pi.html#pistews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>). So part of the \u201csubtly misplaced emphasis\u201d may be a matter of translation. James&#8217; \u201csubtly misplaced emphasis\u201d comes into view when considering his intended audience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/James+1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>the twelve tribes in the Dispersion<\/i><\/a> (Romans 9:30-32a ESV): <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn20\">law<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_Table22\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/03\/18\/a-monotonous-cycle-revisited-part-2\/#_ftn21\">works<\/a> <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/er.html#ergon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03c1\u03b3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>) [<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/01\/13\/romans-part-91\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">James preached the virtue of singing to the choir. But <i>to supplement <\/i>is <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epic.html#epicorhghsate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c7\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b3\u1f75\u03c3\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5<\/a>, an imperative form of the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epic.html#epicorhgew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03c7\u03bf\u03c1\u03b7\u03b3\u03ad\u03c9<\/a> in the active voice: \u201cto furnish, provide for (at one&#8217;s own expense); to provide monetary needs; to give, grant; to support; to lead a chorus.\u201d What must I <i>supplement<\/i> (\u201cadd\u201d) to <i>all things that pertain to life and godliness<\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_temptation\"><\/a>I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/#_Peter\">elsewhere<\/a>: \u201cPeter\u2019s writing spoke to me long before Paul\u2019s made any sense at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">At the time I was ready to believe Jesus again I was more than willing to <\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">make every effort to add to<em> [my] <\/em>faith excellence<em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/#sdfootnote7sym\">7<\/a><\/sup> <\/em>Excellence<em> is a contemporary attempt to rekindle some <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greek fire<\/a> in Aret\u00e9 (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/are.html#areth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c1\u03ad\u03c4\u03b7<\/a>), since virtue has become an old scold. I set out, discounting the Gospel as something I\u2019d already tried and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/06\/23\/who-am-i-part-3\/#_contract\">found wanting<\/a>, to obey the law, <\/em>excellently<em>, <\/em>virtuously<em>. And I saw my efforts as the only sure way of <\/em>escaping the worldly<em><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/#sdfootnote8sym\">8<\/a><\/sup> <\/em>corruption that is produced by evil desire<em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epiq.html#epiqumia6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u1f77\u1fb3<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/epiq.html#epiqumia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03c5\u03bc\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/#sdfootnote9sym\">9<\/a><\/sup> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/2+Peter+1:4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">After<\/a><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2017\/07\/02\/fear-deuteronomy-part-8\/#_NET\">I escaped<\/a> the worldly corruption produced by evil desire by making every effort to keep the law, then I <\/em>may become<em> [a partaker] <\/em>of the divine nature<em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/10\/27\/peters-way\/#sdfootnote10sym\">10<\/a><\/sup> <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I searched the Bible for rules to obey, fully expecting to be <i>perfected by the flesh<\/i> because Jesus would help me to have <i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote34sym\" name=\"sdfootnote34anc\"><sup>34<\/sup><\/a> In the beginning I couldn&#8217;t even imagine a <i>righteousness of God<\/i>&#8230;<i>apart from the law<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote35sym\" name=\"sdfootnote35anc\"><sup>35<\/sup><\/a> \u201cI believed at the very core of my being that faith was opposed to reason as reason was opposed to faith.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote36sym\" name=\"sdfootnote36anc\"><sup>36<\/sup><\/a> And perhaps, more to the point, the core of my core beliefs was: reason, good; faith, bad. So, <i>the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2018\/11\/12\/atonement-part-11\/#_ftn43\">all<\/a> who believe<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote37sym\" name=\"sdfootnote37anc\"><sup>37<\/sup><\/a> was not merely beyond my imagination, but even beyond the pale of my moral universe. A righteousness based on law seemed, all and all, more <i>reasonable<\/i>. As Paul wrote, <i>the law is not of faith<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote38sym\" name=\"sdfootnote38anc\"><sup>38<\/sup><\/a> But Jesus continued to draw me to Himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since I was reading the Bible then, it is possible to outline some of the ways He drew me. Searching the Bible for rules to obey, it wasn&#8217;t long before I had tied up a heavy burden, <i>hard to bear<\/i>. Yes, it was very reminiscent of Jesus&#8217; description of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/Matthew+23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scribes and Pharisees<\/a> (Matthew 23:4 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn21\">They tie up<\/a> heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people\u2019s shoulders, but <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_ftn22\">they<\/a> themselves are not willing to move them with their finger <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/02\/17\/father-forgive-them-part-6\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And yes, I argued for a time that I was not a <em>hypocrite<\/em> like those scribes and Pharisees because I was actually trying to lift the heavy burden that \u201cJesus gave me to bear.\u201d But <a id=\"_boast\"><\/a>Jesus said (Luke 17:7-10 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cWill any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#sdfootnote5sym\">to him<\/a> when he has come in from the field, \u2018Come at once and <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#sdfootnote6sym\">recline at table<\/a>\u2019? <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#_Table6\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> Will he not rather say to him, \u2018Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink\u2019? Does he thank <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#sdfootnote7sym\">the<\/a> servant because he did what <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#sdfootnote8sym\">was commanded<\/a>? <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2024\/09\/01\/christ-centered-preaching-chapter-5\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, \u2018We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once my angry rant subsided and I paused to catch my breath, I could see that Jesus and I had different perspectives on my righteousness. I saw my righteousness as a high and lofty personal achievement worthy of praise. Yes, it took a while and a lot more Bible study and failure and frustration before I recognized that Jesus saw my righteousness as a baseline He gave willingly and freely if only I believe and receive Him. And yes, even knowing and believing that, I can still have moments of temporary insanity when I reject his grace! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a id=\"_achievement\"><\/a>Jesus also prophesied about works of personal achievement, works that seemed far beyond my ability to achieve (Matthew 7:22, 23 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">On that day many will say to me, \u2018Lord, Lord, did we not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\">prophesy<\/a> in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?\u2019 <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/08\/13\/the-will-of-god-jesus-part-1\/#_Table32\">Table<\/a>]<\/em> And then will I declare to them, \u2018I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus did not dispute their achievements. And yes, it took some time for me to hear <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ou.html#oudepote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1f73\u03c0\u03bf\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/egn.html#egnwn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f14\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03bd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/um.html#umas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> (ESV: <i>I never knew you<\/i>) as Jesus&#8217; intention to have <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/03\/is-sin-less-than-sin-part-4\/#_alone\">spiritual intercourse<\/a> with me\u2014with all. (This intimate communion with God the Father, God the Son through God the indwelling Holy Spirit has become my favorite part of spending my days with Him studying the Bible to what ever depth of detail He will empower me to go.) Somewhat ironically perhaps and with a dazzling display of power and authority, He continued to draw me to Himself through the writings of Paul. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I, too, delighted <i>in the law of God, in my inner being<\/i>;<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote39sym\" name=\"sdfootnote39anc\"><sup>39<\/sup><\/a> <i>I<\/i> had <i>the desire to do what is right, but <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/10\/01\/a-shadow-of-the-good-things-part-6\/#_ftn14\">not the ability<\/a> to carry it out<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote40sym\" name=\"sdfootnote40anc\"><sup>40<\/sup><\/a> As I began to entertain <i>the righteousness of God<\/i> as a plausible alternative to <i>a righteousness of my own that comes from the law<\/i>, I assumed I had misunderstood Peter. Later, I assumed that \u201cPeter was not the writer, not the literary man or learned man, that Paul was.\u201d<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#sdfootnote41sym\" name=\"sdfootnote41anc\"><sup>41<\/sup><\/a> Only recently have I begun to hear Peter&#8217;s writing as an illustration of the difference between <i>being perfected by the flesh<\/i> and <i>by hearing with faith<\/i>, as well as an explanation why he in a moment in time in Antioch was so easily led astray when <i>certain men came from James<\/i>. As was pointed out above, the Subjunctive Mood indicates the probability of an event, and the Aorist Tense emphasizes an action as simply occurring, without any specific reference to time, apart from the use of an adverbial modifier (e.g., that which would describe when, where, how much, or how often).
