These few changes are more congenial to walking and living by the Spirit by hearing with faith. The ESV translation as is could encourage one to continue his foolish attempt to be perfected by the flesh. The dead giveaway was having Paul encourage the foolish one to have reason to boast<\/i> (\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)…in himself<\/i> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>). Jesus would not approve.4<\/sup><\/a> And Paul wrote to foolish Galatians<\/i><\/a>: But far be it from me to boast<\/i> (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of \u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world<\/i>.5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

I’m reminded of Jesus’ words to the man from whom He had cast out the Legion<\/i> of demons: Go home to your friends and tell<\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u1f71\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, an imperative form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) them how much the Lord has done<\/i>6<\/sup><\/a> for you, and how he has had mercy on you<\/i>.7<\/sup><\/a> It helps highlight the difference between telling what the Lord has done in and through me and boasting about what the Lord has done in and through me: The former remains cognizant of the truth: We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty<\/i>.8<\/sup><\/a> The latter does not. Consider how Paul told what the Lord had done in and through him (Galatians 2:20 EXP11<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n

By means of Christ I have been crucified, but I live hereafter not I but He lives within me, Christ, so who now I live within flesh, by faithfulness I live by means of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul wrote elsewhere how this love<\/i> renders one holy and blameless<\/i> (Romans 13:8-10 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, \u201cYou shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal<\/a>, You shall not covet,\u201d and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: \u201cYou shall love your neighbor as yourself<\/a>\u201d [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. Love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> is the fulfilling of the law.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And he identified the source of this love<\/i> (Galatians 5:22a ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

But the fruit (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03c0\u1f78\u03c2<\/a>; <\/i><\/em>e.g., \u201cresult\u201d)<\/em> of the Spirit is love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em>…<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also expounded on this love<\/i> that is the result of the indwelling Holy Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 13:4-13 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

Love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> is patient and kind; love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> never ends<\/a>. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For<\/a> we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes<\/a>, the partial will pass away [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When<\/a> I became a man, I gave up childish ways [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So now faith, hope, and love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em> abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love (\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The love<\/i> which renders one holy and blameless<\/i> is not achieved by being perfected by the flesh<\/i><\/a> but by hearing with faith<\/i><\/a>. I’m here in Ephesians ostensibly because he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace<\/i>11<\/sup><\/a> serves as a rebuttal of sorts to the contention that and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone<\/i>12<\/sup><\/a> is an appropriate translation of \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u1f79\u03c4\u03b5<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u1f15\u03be\u03b5\u03b9<\/a>. Granted, once I hear \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> as a matter of private boasting, \u201cunto himself alone,\u201d rather than boasting about<\/i> himself, even in himself alone<\/i> rings true. But the bookend\u2014\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03bf\u1f50\u03ba<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u1f15\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, and not in his neighbor<\/i>13<\/sup><\/a>\u2014is rendered unintelligible. Boasting privately within my neighbor is a ventriloquist act that has never even occurred to me to attempt, though boasting about myself, or the work of God in and through me, unto<\/i> my neighbor is well within the purview of my potential offenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that I am here, however, Paul’s letter To the saints who are in Ephesus<\/i>14<\/sup><\/a> is a treasure trove of truth to be hearing with faith<\/i>: Not only did he call them the saints<\/i> (\u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>), he described them as faithful<\/i> by means of Christ Jesus<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n

You are severed from Christ<\/a>, you who would be justified by the law (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u1ff3<\/a>; \u201cby means of law\u201d)<\/em>; you have fallen away from grace [Table<\/a>]<\/em>. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus (\u1f10\u03bd<\/a>…\u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> |\u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>|; \u201cby means of Christ Jesus\u201d)<\/em> neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith (\u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>)<\/em> working through love.15<\/sup><\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hearing the dative case<\/a> in Paul’s writing as \u201cby means of,\u201d more often than not, is probably a necessary step in overcoming every attempt at being perfected by the flesh<\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a> The truth to be hearing with faith<\/i> is: Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God<\/i>: To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful <\/i>by means of Christ Jesus<\/i>: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ. The blessed God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us<\/i> by means of every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places<\/i> by means of Christ<\/i>, even as he chose us<\/i> by means of him before the foundation of the world<\/i> to be us, holy and blameless before him<\/i> by means of love<\/i>: he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to<\/i> Him according to the purpose of his will<\/i> unto praise of his glorious grace<\/i> which has blessed us<\/i> by means of the Beloved<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As I worked on this essay I watched Lars von Trier’s<\/a> Melancholia<\/a> again<\/a>, drawn to it as irresistibly as Justine (Kirsten Dunst<\/a>) is drawn out of her sister’s\u00a0house to bathe naked in the reflected light of the giant planet on a collision course with earth. Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg<\/a>), Justine’s sister, follows Justine at a distance and becomes our window into her amorous affection for impending death. <\/span><\/p>\n

Justine had rejected her husband Michael (Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a>) from their bridal bed, only to wander off and rape Tim (Brady Corbet<\/a>) in the sand trap on her brother-in-law’s golf course, still wearing her wedding dress. And Claire’s voyeuristic presence at Justine’s tryst with the planet Melancholia reminds us of her failure to engage her depressed sister in an imitation of life; namely, her attempt to put Justine in a bath before eating a favorite meal\u2014meatloaf she had specially prepared\u2014a gesture which Justine also rejected: \u201cIt tastes like ashes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

And I was again reminded of Lars von Trier’s uncanny ability to dramatize biblical themes. The speaker of the headline of this section\u2014all who hate me love death<\/i>24<\/sup><\/a>\u2014is God: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

I understand Justine as an actor playing a role called happiness<\/em> (unconvincingly) in a world that is ultimately absurd to her, a mindless concatenation of meaningless rituals: evil<\/i> in a word, though even evil<\/i> loses its potency when not held in opposition to the goodness and graciousness, love<\/i> in a word, of God. She only comes to life, as it were, only comes into her own true self as death overwhelms all (well, everyone except for her young nephew, to whom she lies shamelessly). We, however, live in a real world where death is ultimately defeated<\/a>, where the goodness of God draws you to Himself to love and possess you through Jesus: the way, and the truth, and the life<\/i>.26<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

The truth to be hearing with faith <\/i>is: By means of whom also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined of Him who<\/i> the whole works according to the counsel of his will<\/i>, so that we who<\/i> are unto praise of his glory were first to hope<\/i> by means of Christ<\/em>. By means of whom also you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation<\/i>, by means of whom also believed<\/i>; you were sealed<\/i> by means of the Spirit<\/i> of the promise by means of the holy<\/i> [One] who is the guarantee of our inheritance<\/i> for redemption of possession unto praise of his glory<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>I may be getting carried away with the \u201cby means of\u201d aspect of Paul’s use of the dative case<\/a>. But I would prefer to praise the Lord too much, rather than too little, for his salvation, not falling back into the temptation<\/a> of being perfected by the flesh<\/i>. Paul made it abundantly clear here that the Lord’s purpose in saving me was unto praise of his glory<\/i>. His salvation is good. I will perceive that goodness and will praise Him for it because that<\/em> is his purpose. And I’ll continue to study Ephesians to know more truth to be hearing with faith<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n
