The ESV translation as is could encourage one to continue his foolish attempt to be perfected by the flesh. The dead giveaway was having Paul encourage the foolish one to have <i>reason to boast<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/to.html#to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c4\u1f78<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kau.html#kauchma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f7b\u03c7\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1<\/a>)&#8230;<i>in himself<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/eis.html#eis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/ea.html#eauton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f11\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a>). Jesus would not approve.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a> And Paul wrote to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esv.org\/Galatians+3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>foolish Galatians<\/i><\/a>: <i>But far be it from me to boast<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kau.html#kaucasqai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/kau.html#kaucaomai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03ba\u03b1\u03c5\u03c7\u03ac\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) <i>except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m reminded of Jesus&#8217; words to the man from whom He had cast out the <i>Legion<\/i> of demons: <i>Go home to your friends and tell<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apag.html#apaggeilon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u1f71\u03b3\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, an imperative form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/apag.html#apaggellw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u1f00\u03c0\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03bb\u03c9<\/a>) <i>them how much the Lord has done<\/i><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote6sym\" name=\"sdfootnote6anc\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a> <i>for you, and how he has had mercy on you<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote7sym\" name=\"sdfootnote7anc\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> It helps highlight the difference between telling what the Lord has done in and through me and boasting about what the Lord has done in and through me: The former remains cognizant of the truth: <i>We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote8sym\" name=\"sdfootnote8anc\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a> The latter does not. Consider how Paul told what the Lord had done in and through him (Galatians 2:20 <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#_EXP11\">EXP11<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">By means of Christ I have been crucified, but I live hereafter not I but He lives within me, Christ, so who now I live within flesh, by faithfulness I live by means of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;to the praise of his glorious grace&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_ftn2\">in<\/a> Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2019\/11\/22\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-1\/#_Table15\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. Claire (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlotte_Gainsbourg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlotte Gainsbourg<\/a>), Justine&#8217;s sister, follows Justine at a distance and becomes our window into her amorous affection for impending death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Justine had rejected her husband Michael (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Skarsg%C3%A5rd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/a>) from their bridal bed, only to wander off and rape Tim (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brady_Corbet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brady Corbet<\/a>) in the sand trap on her brother-in-law&#8217;s golf course, still wearing her wedding dress. And Claire&#8217;s voyeuristic presence at Justine&#8217;s tryst with the planet Melancholia reminds us of her failure to engage her depressed sister in an imitation of life; namely, her attempt to put Justine in a bath before eating a favorite meal\u2014meatloaf she had specially prepared\u2014a gesture which Justine also rejected: \u201cIt tastes like ashes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I was again reminded of Lars von Trier&#8217;s uncanny ability to dramatize biblical themes. For Jews demand <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote4sym\">signs<\/a> and Greeks seek wisdom <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em>, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote5sym\">Gentiles<\/a> <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#_Table7\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/greekdoc.github.io\/lexicon\/so.html#sofia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u03af\u03b1<\/a>)<\/em> of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#sdfootnote6sym\">is<\/a> stronger than men <em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2012\/07\/22\/romans-part-1\/#_Table8\">Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the fictional world of Lars von Trier&#8217;s Melancholia there was no salvation from death or the love of death. As Justine said: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The earth is evil. We don&#8217;t need to grieve for it&#8230;Nobody will miss it&#8230;All I know is, life on earth is evil&#8230;I know we&#8217;re alone&#8230;Life is only on earth\u2014and not for long. <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Justine&#8217;s hatred of God doesn&#8217;t manifest in particularly overt or aggressive ways. She is a fictional character. Jesus is not drawing her to Himself with the infinite gravity of <i>All authority in heaven and on <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2020\/05\/01\/the-lost-son-of-perdition-part-2\/#_ftn25\">earth<\/a><\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote25sym\" name=\"sdfootnote25anc\"><sup>25<\/sup><\/a> There is nothing for her to resist. She simply states her hatred calmly: \u201cI know we&#8217;re alone.\u201d Still, as writer and director of Melancholia, Mr. von Trier grounded Justine in the here and now. Her mother Gaby (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlotte_Rampling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlotte Rampling<\/a>) reveals much of Justine&#8217;s nurturing in an impromptu and unwilling wedding toast: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yes, I wasn&#8217;t at the church. I don&#8217;t believe in marriage. Claire, who I&#8217;ve always taken for a sensible girl, you&#8217;ve arranged a spectacular party: Till death do us part and forever and ever, Justine and Michael. I just have one thing to say: enjoy it while it lasts. I myself hate marriages&#8230;especially when they involve some of my closest family members.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And Justine&#8217;s erratic behavior bears some resemblance to the contemporary woman whose quest for self-possession both entitles her to share herself with whomever whenever she chooses and prohibits her from being possessed by another, man or God. Her father Dexter (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Hurt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Hurt<\/a>) has no words to say beyond his complaint about not wishing to complain about Gaby (which provoked Gaby&#8217;s outburst). Dexter will dance with his daughter and party with her but will not, or cannot, have a serious conversation with her about her concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I understand Justine as an actor playing a role called <em>happiness<\/em> (unconvincingly) in a world that is ultimately absurd to her, a mindless concatenation of meaningless rituals: <i>evil<\/i> in a word, though even <i>evil<\/i> loses its potency when not held in opposition to the goodness and graciousness, <i>love<\/i> in a word, of God. She only comes to life, as it were, only comes into her own true self as death overwhelms all (well, everyone except for her young nephew, to whom she lies shamelessly). We, however, live in a real world where death is <a href=\"https:\/\/netbible.org\/bible\/1+Corinthians+15:26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultimately defeated<\/a>, where the goodness of God draws you to Himself to love and possess you through Jesus: <i>the way, and the truth, and the life<\/i>.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/26\/exploration-part-12\/#sdfootnote26sym\" name=\"sdfootnote26anc\"><sup>26<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The truth to be <i>hearing with faith <\/i>is: By means of whom also <i>we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined of Him who<\/i> the whole <i>works according to the counsel of his will<\/i>, <i>so that we who<\/i> are unto <i>praise of his glory were first to hope<\/i> by means of <em>Christ<\/em>. But I would prefer to praise the Lord too much, rather than too little, for his salvation, not <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligent-torvalds.74-208-171-134.plesk.page\/2025\/05\/08\/exploration-part-11\/#_temptation\">falling back into the temptation<\/a> of <i>being perfected by the flesh<\/i>. Paul made it abundantly clear here that the Lord&#8217;s purpose in saving me was unto <i>praise of his glory<\/i>. His salvation is good. I will perceive that goodness and will praise Him for it because <em>that<\/em> is his purpose.
