I’ll continue hearing with faith<\/i>1<\/sup><\/a> the truth of the Gospel (Ephesians 1:15-23 ESV):<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you2<\/sup><\/a><\/em> in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts3<\/sup><\/a><\/em> enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what4<\/sup><\/a><\/em> are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the<\/a> dead and seated5<\/sup><\/a><\/em> him at his right hand in the heavenly places [Table<\/a>]<\/em>, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all<\/a> in all [Table<\/a>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…his great might that he worked in Christ…<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The Greek is: \u0394\u03b9\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, For this reason<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u03b3\u1f7c<\/a> \u1f00\u03ba\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u1fbf<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u1f77\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a>, because I have heard of your<\/a> faith<\/i>, \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u1ff3<\/a> \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, in the Lord Jesus<\/i> (or \u201cby means of the Lord Jesus\u201d), \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> |\u1f00\u03b3\u1f71\u03c0\u03b7\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a>|, and your love<\/i>, \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a>, toward all the saints<\/i>. The Greek words translated the Lord<\/i>, \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u1ff3<\/a>, are in the dative case.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dative is the case of the indirect object, or may also indicate the means by which something is done.6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And here I can argue that \u201cby means of\u201d is more than an interesting option. It is the more appropriate translation. Paul continued: \u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>, I do not cease<\/i>, \u03b5\u1f50\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, to give thanks<\/i> (or \u201cgiving thanks\u201d or \u201cfeeling obligated to thank [God]\u201d) \u1f51\u03c0\u1f72\u03c1<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, for you<\/i> (or \u201cabout you\u201d), \u03bc\u03bd\u03b5\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03bf\u1f7b\u03bc\u03b5\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, remembering you<\/i> (literally, \u201cremembering to do\u201d), \u1f10\u03c0\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b5\u03c5\u03c7\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, in my prayers<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does Paul praise God or feel obligated to thank Him for the saints who are in Ephesus<\/i>?7<\/sup><\/a> Why not praise them instead for their faith in the Lord Jesus and<\/i> [their] love toward all the saints<\/i>?8<\/sup><\/a> Did Paul know (and write quite clearly) that God was responsible for both their faith<\/i> and their love toward all the saints<\/i> by means of the Lord Jesus? The answer to the question whether Paul knew this is an undeniable \u201cyes,\u201d and translating \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u1ff3<\/a> \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> otherwise only encourages those who are unaccustomed to the leading of the indwelling Holy Spirit and unfamiliar with the power of God to wonder why we must thank God for our own works of obedience. <\/span><\/p>\n

Granted, even that question\u2014why must I thank and praise God for my own obedience?\u2014led by the Holy Spirit may lead one to contemplate the difference between foolish Galatians, whose works of obedience were achieved (or not) by being perfected by the flesh through law, and the saints in Ephesus, whose works of obedience were achieved by the Spirit by hearing with faith. It prompts me to wonder how foolish Galatians would have perceived and received the saints in Ephesus. Would they have recognized their godliness and been restored in a spirit of gentleness, or would they have disdained them for their disregard of the rules by which the foolish Galatians justified themselves? And how would the saints in Ephesus have perceived and received the foolish Galatians? Would they have stood firm in the freedom for which Christ had set them free, or would they have been tempted<\/a> by outward appearances to be justified by law and perfected by the flesh?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul’s thought continued: \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a>, that<\/i> (or \u201cin order that\u201d or \u201cso that\u201d), \u1f41<\/a> \u03b8\u03b5\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u1f77\u03bf\u03c5<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ<\/i>, \u1f41<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03c4\u1f74\u03c1<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b7\u03c2<\/a>, the Father of glory<\/i>, \u03b4\u1f7d\u1fc3<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd<\/a>, may give you<\/i> (e.g.<\/i>, \u201cmay give to you\u201d rather than \u201cmay give by means of you\u201d), \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1<\/a> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c6\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f00\u03c0\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03bb\u1f7b\u03c8\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b3\u03bd\u1f7d\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him<\/i> (or \u201cwisdom’s and revelation’s spirit by means of his knowledge\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

The verb \u03b4\u1f7d\u1fc3<\/a>, may give<\/i> (ESV), is a form of \u03b4\u03af\u03b4\u03c9\u03bc\u03b9<\/a> in the subjunctive mood<\/a>. The conjunction \u1f35\u03bd\u03b1<\/a> indicates that this is a purpose or result clause. <\/span><\/p>\n

The subjunctive mood indicates probability or objective possibility…However if the subjunctive mood is used in a purpose or result clause, then the action should not be thought of as a possible result, but should be viewed as a definite outcome that will happen as a result of another stated action.9<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We are meant to hear the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,<\/i> will grant<\/i> to you<\/i> \u201cwisdom’s and revelation’s spirit by means of his knowledge,\u201d even though the verb is not \u03b4\u03ce\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9<\/a> in the future tense and indicative mood<\/a>. So, what is \u201canother stated action\u201d that moves \u201cHe may grant<\/i> to you<\/i> wisdom’s and revelation’s spirit by means of his knowledge\u201d from \u201ca possible result\u201d to \u201ca definite outcome that will happen\u201d? I do not cease<\/i> giving thanks for you,<\/i> remembering to do [so] in my prayers<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

…and coming to his hometown [Jesus]<\/em> taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished,10<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and said, \u201cWhere did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter\u2019s son? Is not11<\/sup><\/a><\/em> his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph12<\/sup><\/a><\/em> and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?\u201d And they took offense (\u1f10\u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u1f77\u03b6\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf<\/a>, a passive<\/a> form of \u03c3\u03ba\u03b1\u03bd\u03b4\u03b1\u03bb\u03af\u03b6\u03c9<\/a>)<\/em> at him. But Jesus said to them, \u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his13<\/sup><\/a><\/em> hometown and in his own household.\u201d And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1f77\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03af\u03b1<\/a>).14<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paul supplied<\/a> the faith<\/a> through his persistent thanksgiving for many mighty works<\/i> (\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70\u03c2<\/a>) of God: \u201cwisdom’s and revelation’s spirit by means of [God’s] knowledge\u201d given as gifts to individual saints<\/em> in Ephesus. This is instructive to those who like foolish Galatians<\/i><\/a> believe they are being perfected by the flesh<\/i>.15<\/sup><\/a> It is more instructive to the spiritual<\/i><\/a> who are tasked with the obligation to restore<\/i> [them<\/a>] in a spirit of gentleness<\/a><\/i>.16<\/sup><\/a> Who else will supply the faith<\/a> for the many mighty works<\/i> of God they so desperately require as they themselves put<\/i>…confidence <\/i>(\u03c0\u03b5\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03b8\u1f79\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9<\/a>) in the flesh<\/i>?17<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

For I tell you<\/i>, Jesus said, unless your righteousness <\/i>(\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03c3\u1f7b\u03bd\u03b7<\/a>) exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven<\/i>.18<\/sup><\/a> This no longer means that one must do the old covenant better than the scribes and Pharisees<\/i> (if it ever did). Christ has come; Christ has died; Christ is risen again…. So now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code<\/i>.19<\/sup><\/a> No righteousness of my own derived from the law<\/i><\/a> exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees<\/i>, but only the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness\u2014a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i>.20<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

By means of Christ I have been crucified, but I live hereafter not I but He lives within me, Christ, so who now I live within flesh, by faithfulness I live by means of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.21<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, I am not the hero of my own story; Jesus is the hero of my<\/em> story. Paul continued: \u03c0\u03b5\u03c6\u03c9\u03c4\u03b9\u03c3\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> [\u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>], having the eyes of your hearts enlightened<\/i>, \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u03b5\u1f30\u03b4\u1f73\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, that you may know<\/i> (or \u201cfor you to know\u201d), \u03c4\u1f77\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03bd<\/a> \u1f21<\/a> \u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f76\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03bb\u1f75\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, what is the hope to which he has called you<\/i> (or \u201cwhat is the hope of his calling\u201d), \u03c4\u1f77\u03c2<\/a> \u1f41<\/a> \u03c0\u03bb\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u1f79\u03be\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f01\u03b3\u1f77\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, what<\/i>…the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That this enlightenment in every heart drawn to Him constitutes many mighty works<\/i> of God is borne out in experience as well as in word. There is very little in human nature or the human construction of religion to dissuade one from being perfected by the flesh<\/i>\u2014now!\u2014even less to persuade one to be among those who eagerly wait<\/a><\/i> (\u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03ba\u03b4\u03b5\u03c7\u1f79\u03bc\u03b5\u03b8\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f00\u03c0\u03b5\u03ba\u03b4\u03ad\u03c7\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9<\/a>) for the hope<\/i> (\u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f77\u03b4\u03b1<\/a>, a form of \u1f10\u03bb\u03c0\u1f76\u03c2<\/a>) of righteousness<\/i>.22<\/sup><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Paul’s thought continued: \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c4\u1f77<\/a> \u03c4\u1f78<\/a> \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b2\u1f71\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u03bc\u1f73\u03b3\u03b5\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, and what<\/i>…the immeasurable greatness<\/i>, \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, of his power<\/i>, \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2<\/a> \u1f21\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7a\u03c2<\/a> \u03c0\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u1f7b\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, toward us who believe<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u1f70<\/a> \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd\u1f73\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u03bd<\/a>, according to the working<\/i>, \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a> \u03ba\u03c1\u1f71\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2<\/a> \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, of his great might<\/i>, \u0397\u03bd<\/a> |\u1f10\u03bd\u1f75\u03c1\u03b3\u03b7\u03c3\u03b5\u03bd<\/a>|, that he worked<\/i>, \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u1ff7<\/a>, in Christ<\/i> (or \u201cby means of Christ,\u201d e.g.<\/i>, the life by hearing with faith<\/i><\/a> that Jesus lived on earth), \u1f10\u03b3\u03b5\u1f77\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03ba<\/a> \u03bd\u03b5\u03ba\u03c1\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a>, \u201cto awaken him\u201d from<\/i> \u201cdeath,\u201d \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u1f77\u03c3\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, and seated him<\/i> (or \u201cand install\u201d), \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03b4\u03b5\u03be\u03b9\u1fb7<\/a> \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<\/a>, at his right hand<\/i> (or \u201cby means of his right hand\u201d), \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> \u1f10\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u1f77\u03bf\u03b9\u03c2<\/a>, in the heavenly places<\/i>, \u1f51\u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u1f71\u03bd\u03c9<\/a> \u03c0\u1f71\u03c3\u03b7\u03c2<\/a> \u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u1fc6\u03c2<\/a>, far above all rule<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u1f77\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, and authority<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u1f71\u03bc\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2<\/a>, and power<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u1f79\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a>, and dominion<\/i>, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u1f78\u03c2<\/a> \u1f40\u03bd\u1f79\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/a> \u1f40\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b6\u03bf\u03bc\u1f73\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5<\/a>, and<\/i>…every name that is named<\/i>, \u03bf\u1f50<\/a> \u03bc\u1f79\u03bd\u03bf\u03bd<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b9<\/a> \u03c4\u03bf\u1f7b\u03c4\u1ff3<\/a>, not only in this age<\/i>, \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u1f70<\/a> \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76<\/a> \u1f10\u03bd<\/a> \u03c4\u1ff7<\/a> \u03bc\u1f73\u03bb\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9<\/a>, but also in the one to come<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such is the power that works in us who through the Spirit, by faith<\/i>…eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness<\/i>.23<\/sup><\/a> You<\/i>…who would be justified<\/i> by means of law are severed from Christ<\/a><\/i>; you have fallen away from grace<\/i>.24<\/sup><\/a> You have no hope but being perfected by the flesh<\/i>,25<\/sup><\/a> achieving a righteousness<\/i>\u2014your own righteousness derived from the law<\/i>\u2014which never exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees<\/i>.26<\/sup><\/a> Brothers, <\/i>Paul commanded, even if anyone is caught in any transgression, you, the spiritual, must restore him in a spirit of gentleness<\/i>.27<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

But the truth of reaping and sowing is too fundamental to be withheld from Paul’s general and more pervasive context in his letter to foolish Galatians<\/i><\/a>: you who would be justified by the law<\/i>30<\/sup><\/a> by being perfected by the flesh<\/i>,31<\/sup><\/a> having a righteousness of<\/i> [your] own that comes from the law<\/i>32<\/sup><\/a> are sowing to your own flesh. Sowing to the Spirit seems counterintuitive if one finds herself in a home or religious situation where people bite and devour one another<\/i>,33<\/sup><\/a> or one’s own anxiety over sin fosters conceit, provoking one another<\/i> [by] envying one another<\/i>:34<\/sup><\/a> For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness<\/i>,35<\/sup><\/a> the righteousness that comes by way of Christ\u2019s faithfulness\u2014a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ\u2019s faithfulness<\/i>.36<\/sup><\/a> This is sowing to the Spirit, \u201cfor by means of its own season\u201d we will reap<\/i>,37<\/sup><\/a> \u201cnot becoming weary\u201d by hearing with faith<\/i>.38<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Translating \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>, a form of \u1f51\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2<\/a> in the accusative case<\/a> as if it were in the genitive case<\/a>, of your faith<\/i> in Ephesians 1:15, took me by surprise. Ordinarily, I would expect that to be \u1f51\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd<\/a> (see Table<\/a> below). But I found nine other examples (See Table<\/a> below) in the New Testament. Six of them occur in the phrase \u03b4\u03b9\u2019<\/a> \u1f51\u03bc\u1fb6\u03c2<\/a>. Though I might translate it literally as \u201cthrough you,\u201d it is apparently translated idiomatically as for your sake<\/i> or for your benefit<\/i>.
